To translate a whole book with Claude Code or Codex, first prepare a clean, structured source file; divide it into coherent chapters or sections; keep a shared glossary and style guide; translate with enough context to resolve references; then check every section against the original before merging and exporting. You can work chapter by chapter for closer editorial control or use a parallel, resumable chunk workflow when batching and recovery matter. Neither approach is established as more accurate by the available workflow documentation.
1. Choose and prepare the source file
Start with the most structurally useful version of the book you have. EPUB is often a good primary source when available because its chapter structure can be retained. For a PDF-only book—or a scanned book—extract or convert the content before translation, and inspect the result for missing text, broken reading order, and layout-dependent material.

- EPUB: Use the existing chapter structure where possible, then check that headings, notes, tables, and other elements survived conversion.
- PDF: Extract text or convert it to Markdown and inspect the output. Scans may require OCR. For charts, diagrams, or other visual elements, keep the relevant page images available for review.
- DOCX: Convert to a structured working format such as Markdown if that better suits the translation workflow, and verify that headings and notes remain identifiable.
The Rainman Translate Book workflow documents PDF, DOCX, and EPUB conversion to Markdown through Calibre, as well as using pre-extracted Markdown. Anthropic’s PDF documentation describes Claude receiving extracted page text alongside a page image; that may help with visual context, but it does not guarantee correct extraction or translation. Large PDFs may need to be split.

Use chapters or coherent sections as translation units rather than splitting at arbitrary character counts. Each unit should be large enough to preserve local meaning and small enough to inspect, retry, and compare with its source. Keep a manifest that maps each numbered source unit to its translated output. Rainman Translate Book documents numbered Markdown chunks and a manifest containing hashes; these help track which inputs have changed and whether outputs correspond to them.

Chunking also creates a context problem: a pronoun, character, or term may depend on material just outside the current section. Include relevant neighboring context in the instructions or provide read-only excerpts from adjacent chunks. Rainman documents using short excerpts this way, alongside entity tracking and alias or spelling-drift handling.
3. Establish translation rules before the manuscript drifts
Create a shared glossary and style guide before translating many sections. Record names, recurring technical or fictional terms, preferred spellings, forms of address, register, and any deliberate choices that should not be normalized. Treat the glossary as a working document: add decisions as they arise and apply important changes consistently to earlier sections.

The chapter-by-chapter Codex workflow recommends a rolling glossary and revisiting earlier chapters as terminology settles. In a chunked workflow, the same glossary should be supplied to every translation unit; entity tracking and alias handling can help manage spelling variation, but they do not decide whether a translation choice is appropriate.
4. Choose a work pattern

These are differences in process design, not evidence that one method is faster or produces a better translation. The Rainman Translate Book README currently describes eight concurrent subagents by default; that is a mutable implementation detail, not a quality measure. OpenAI describes Codex CLI as a terminal tool for inspecting, editing, and running code, with choices such as model, reasoning effort, permissions, and commands. That supports using Codex to coordinate file-based work, but does not establish book-translation performance.

5. Give each translation unit a precise brief
For every unit, provide the source passage, target language, relevant glossary and style rules, and enough surrounding context to resolve references. State that the output must preserve the source’s structure and distinguish any uncertain passage rather than silently guessing. A representative instruction used in project documentation is “Translate /path/to/book.pdf into Chinese”; another is “translate /path/to/book.pdf to Japanese.” For a full-book workflow, make the file path and target language explicit, then give each unit the same project rules.
Keep the translated output separate from the source and label it so that it maps unambiguously to its chapter or chunk. In a parallel setup, the workflow can dispatch one task per chunk; in a sequential setup, complete and inspect one chapter before moving on. A prompt is only an instruction: it does not verify that a section was translated completely or faithfully.

6. Validate completeness before merging
Run mechanical checks before assembling the book. The documented parallel workflow compares manifest hashes and checks one-to-one correspondence between source and output chunks. These checks can reveal changed inputs, missing outputs, or stale sections. They cannot establish that a passage is semantically complete, that a technical term is right, or that the target-language prose reads naturally.

- Check that the source hashes or other manifest state match the version you intend to publish.
- Inspect headings, notes, tables, quotations, numbers, and figure references for omissions or damaged structure.
- Compare the translation against the source, paying special attention to ambiguous references and glossary changes.
Rainman Translate Book describes full-book organic validation as future work, so its integrity checks should not be treated as a substitute for a complete editorial review.

7. Review the translation and produce the book
Have a bilingual reviewer compare the assembled text with the original, not just proofread the target-language text in isolation. Review for omissions, changed facts or numbers, inconsistent terminology, quotations, notes, tables, and content whose meaning depends on page layout or figures. Repair the source or glossary and selectively rerun affected sections when appropriate, then recheck those sections in the merged manuscript.
Rainman Translate Book documents merging and generation to HTML, DOCX, EPUB, and PDF. Choose the export format based on the intended use, then inspect the rendered result: a structurally sound Markdown translation can still produce broken headings, notes, tables, or page-sensitive content in the final file.
What this workflow can—and cannot—tell you
The documented tools and projects describe ways to process files, organize translation work, track consistency, resume chunks, and export a manuscript. They do not provide a controlled comparison of Claude Code and Codex, or of parallel and sequential translation, and they do not establish that either produces publication-ready prose. Treat the pipeline as a way to make work inspectable and recoverable; translation quality still depends on the source, instructions, language expertise, and review.
