Windows Errors? Fix Them Before They Spread

Random freezes, missing sound and display glitches usually trace back to one bad driver. Find and replace yours safely.Free scan · under a minuteTo move your number safely, first decide whether you’re changing phones on the same carrier or moving your number to a new carrier. A same-carrier move is usually a SIM or device activation; changing providers is a number port. In either case, use the carrier’s official process, keep your old service active until a port finishes, and verify calls, texts, and data before relying on the new SIM.
First, identify which transfer you need
“Moving a number to a new SIM” can describe different tasks, and choosing the right one prevents a common mistake: treating a carrier change like a simple SIM swap.

| Your situation | What happens | Who starts the process |
|---|---|---|
| Same carrier, new phone or SIM | Your existing number is reassigned to a different SIM or device. This is not a number port. | Your carrier, or a supported phone setup flow. See Google Pixel eSIM transfer guidance. |
| New carrier, same number | The receiving carrier ports your number from the current provider. | Start with the new carrier. Its requirements depend on provider and location; T-Mobile’s porting guidance says not to cancel the old account before the transfer completes. |
| Physical SIM or eSIM | A physical SIM is inserted in a compatible phone; an eSIM is activated or transferred through supported phone and carrier flows. | Use the phone’s transfer flow only if it is supported, or follow the carrier’s activation instructions. Automatic eSIM transfer is not universal. |
For a new-carrier port, the old account must remain active until the receiving carrier confirms completion. Do not cancel it yourself beforehand.

Prepare before changing your service
- Check the phone. Confirm the new device supports the carrier’s network and the SIM type you plan to use. If you are switching providers, check whether the phone must be unlocked.
- Get the required transfer details. The receiving carrier may ask for the current account number, transfer PIN or passcode, and identity verification. Get these through your current carrier’s official account or support channel. Don’t give them to someone who contacts you unexpectedly.
- Back up important information. Save contacts, messages, and anything else stored on the phone. Carrier guidance notes that voicemail can reset during a port, so save important messages first.
- Protect access to your carrier account. Set a strong account password or PIN and ask whether the carrier offers SIM-change or port-out protection.
For a number port, submit the request through the receiving carrier and wait for its completion confirmation. Eligibility checks and procedures vary by carrier and jurisdiction. For example, Australia’s ACMA guidance says mobile ports there usually take three hours and describes local identity checks; India’s TRAI guidance describes a separate UPC-based process with timing that varies by service area and possible interruption. These are local examples, not a universal timeline—ask your carrier or national regulator about the process where you live.

Activate the new SIM
If you have a physical SIM
- Turn off the phone if the manufacturer or carrier instructs you to do so.
- Open the SIM tray and insert the carrier-supported SIM in the orientation shown for your phone. Use an ejector tool only if the tray requires one.
- Start the phone and follow any carrier activation prompts. If the line does not activate, use the carrier’s official support channel rather than repeatedly swapping or altering SIM settings.
If you have an eSIM
Follow the carrier’s instructions or use the phone’s built-in eSIM transfer flow if your carrier and devices support it. Google documents transfer during Pixel setup or later from Settings, but says requirements and steps vary by carrier. For automatic transfer on eligible Pixel devices, Google lists Android 12 or later, current Google Play Services, and a screen lock on both devices. If the transfer is not detected or fails, contact the carrier. Don’t delete or disable the old eSIM as a troubleshooting shortcut unless the carrier tells you to.
For more detail, consult Google’s Pixel eSIM instructions.

- Place an outgoing call and ask someone to call your number.
- Send an SMS and confirm you can receive one.
- Turn off Wi-Fi briefly and check that mobile data works.
- Confirm the carrier account shows the correct active line or device.
These checks help reveal an incomplete activation; your carrier’s status page or support team can confirm its own activation state and troubleshoot failures. If this was a port, wait for the receiving carrier to confirm completion before closing or cancelling the old account.

Understand SIM-swap and port-out fraud
A legitimate SIM change moves your service to a SIM or device you control. Fraud happens when an attacker impersonates you and persuades a carrier to move the number to a device they control. A port-out attack instead moves the number to an account with another carrier. In either case, the attacker may receive your calls and texts, including codes sent by services that still rely on SMS verification. The FCC’s SIM-swap and port-out protections address these risks.
Reduce the chance and impact of a takeover:
- Use a carrier account PIN or password and enable available SIM-change or port-out protections.
- Limit personal details exposed publicly that could help someone impersonate you.
- Where a sensitive service allows it, use an authenticator app or security key instead of SMS codes. SMS-based multifactor authentication may not protect an account if an attacker controls your number. See the FTC’s advice on SIM-swap scams.
Respond quickly to signs of an unauthorized transfer
An unexpected loss of calls, texts, and mobile data—especially alongside a SIM activation notification you did not request—can be a warning sign. Contact your carrier immediately through a trusted number, app, or website you already know, and ask it to recover and secure the number. Once you regain access, change passwords for important accounts and review bank and card activity. Report suspicious transactions to the relevant financial institution.
