You can copy photos straight from an Android phone to a USB flash drive if the phone supports USB storage and the connector fits. Connect the drive (using a compatible OTG adapter if needed), open a file manager, copy the photos to the drive, then verify the files before disconnecting it.
What you need before you start
- An Android phone that supports connecting to USB storage. Support and menus vary by model.
- A USB flash drive with a connector that fits the phone, or a compatible OTG adapter. For example, Samsung says its Type-A-to-Type-C adapter supports OTG and may be needed to connect external storage on Galaxy devices (Samsung’s adapter guidance).
- A file manager. Files by Google documents USB storage access on Android 7.0 (Nougat) and later; Samsung Galaxy phones can use My Files.
A USB-C drive can connect directly to a USB-C phone when the phone supports USB host/OTG. If you already have a USB-A drive, an OTG adapter can let you reuse it; a dual-connector drive is another option. Check compatibility for your exact phone rather than assuming every Android device supports every drive.

Transfer photos with Files by Google
- Connect the USB drive to the phone. Use an adapter if the drive’s plug does not fit.
- When the phone shows the “USB available” notification, tap it and allow access. Google documents this USB-storage flow for Android 7.0 and up (Files by Google: use USB storage devices).
- In Files, browse the phone’s local storage or image category and locate the photos. Camera photos are often in a folder such as
DCIM/Camera, but locations vary by phone and app. - Select the photos, choose Copy to, and select the USB drive under Storage devices. Choose a destination folder on the drive and confirm the copy.
- Wait for the copy to finish. Open the destination on the USB drive and check that the expected photos are there before deleting anything from the phone.
Transfer photos on a Samsung Galaxy with My Files
- Connect the USB drive to the Galaxy phone, using a compatible adapter if needed.
- Open My Files and locate the photos in phone storage.
- Select the photos and tap Copy or Move.
- Choose USB storage, select a destination folder, then tap Copy here or Move here. Samsung’s Galaxy USB-drive instructions document both options.
- Check the photos in the USB destination. When finished, return to My Files and unmount the drive before removing it, as Samsung instructs.
Copy or move: which should you choose?
Choose Copy if you want a backup or want to keep the phone originals. Choose Move only if you intend to transfer the files off the phone; confirm they reached the drive before relying on the USB copy as your only copy.

If the phone does not detect the drive
- No “USB available” notification: If you use Files by Google, remove the drive and reconnect it, as Google recommends.
- No USB storage in My Files: Check that the connector is fully seated and that the phone, adapter, and drive are compatible. Samsung says USB storage appears in My Files when a USB storage drive is connected.
- Connector mismatch: Use a compatible OTG adapter or a drive with a connector that fits. For non-Samsung phones, check the phone maker’s guidance for USB host/OTG support.
- The photos are missing from local storage: An item available only in a cloud library may not appear as a local file for the file manager to copy. Download or save it to the phone first, then copy the local file.
There is no single fix established for every cause of a drive not appearing, including drive power needs, file-system support, or manufacturer-specific settings. Avoid formatting the drive as an early troubleshooting step because formatting can erase its contents. Try a known-compatible adapter or drive and consult the phone maker’s instructions before changing drive settings.

Remove the USB drive safely
Use the phone’s safe-removal or unmount control when available. On Samsung Galaxy devices, Samsung specifically says to unmount USB storage in My Files before disconnecting it. For other Android models, follow the prompt shown by the phone or the manufacturer’s instructions.
