For a reliable photo import, connect your unlocked Android phone to the PC with a USB cable that supports file transfer, then use the Windows Photos app. To browse phone folders wirelessly, Windows 11 can show a paired Android device in File Explorer if both meet Microsoft’s requirements. Phone Link, Bluetooth, and cloud downloads cover other situations—but viewing a phone file in File Explorer is not the same as saving a local backup.
Choose the transfer method that fits your task
| Method | Best for | Requirements and limits |
|---|---|---|
| USB and Windows Photos | Importing photos and videos directly from the phone | Use a data-capable cable and unlock the phone. Android may need its USB mode changed to transfer media or photos. Microsoft’s import guidance recommends allowing time for detection. |
| Windows 11 File Explorer mobile device | Browsing and copying files from phone folders wirelessly | Pair the phone and enable Show mobile device in File Explorer. Microsoft lists Android 11 or later and Link to Windows 1.24072.258.0 or later. Files accessed are online-only; deleting one in Explorer permanently removes it from the phone. See Microsoft’s setup and warning. |
| Phone Link file sharing | Sending individual files between the connected PC and phone | For this feature, Microsoft lists Windows 11, Android 10 or later, Link to Windows 1.24032.518.0 or later, and Phone Link 1.24032.156.0 or later. Received files go to DownloadsPhone Link by default. Cloud-stored items are shared as links rather than file copies. Feature instructions and requirements |
| Phone Link recent photos | Quick access to recent camera and screenshot photos | This is not a full-folder import and does not import videos. Microsoft’s description |
| Cloud download | Retrieving photos that already sync from the phone | Use a browser on the PC to download from the cloud service already syncing the photos; this route does not require a direct phone connection. Microsoft describes the browser option. |
| Bluetooth | Sending or receiving individual files between nearby devices | Microsoft documents Bluetooth file sending and receiving between Windows and Android. Its guidance does not establish Bluetooth as the best option for large photo libraries. Bluetooth instructions |
Import photos and videos over USB
- Turn on and unlock the Android phone.
- Connect it to the PC with a USB cable that supports file transfer. Try your existing cable first; it must also have connectors that fit both devices.
- On Windows, open Photos, select Import, choose the connected device, and follow the prompts to select items and a save location.
- If the phone or photos do not appear, check the phone’s USB setting. It may need to be set to transfer media or photos, then give Windows a few moments to detect the device.
Android’s USB menus vary by device, so Microsoft’s general import guidance does not establish one universal sequence of taps. Use the current instructions for your phone if you need to change its USB mode.

Browse phone folders wirelessly in Windows 11
Windows 11’s mobile-device integration can expose phone folders in File Explorer after pairing. Microsoft lists Android 11 or later and Link to Windows 1.24072.258.0 or later for this feature.
- Pair the Android phone with the PC in Windows mobile-device settings.
- On the PC, open Settings > Bluetooth & devices > Mobile devices > Manage Devices.
- Enable Show mobile device in File Explorer.
- Open File Explorer, select the phone in the navigation pane, and browse to Camera or another folder. Copy, paste, drag, or save items to a PC location when you need a local copy.
Files viewed through this File Explorer connection are online-only. Microsoft warns that deleting one from File Explorer permanently deletes it from the linked phone. For that reason, copy or save files to a PC folder before treating them as a backup.

Send from Android to the PC
- On Android, select a locally saved file and tap Share.

- Keep the Android sharing page open until the transfer finishes.
Files received on the PC are saved to DownloadsPhone Link by default; Phone Link settings let you change the destination. If you share an item stored in the cloud rather than locally on the phone, the recipient gets a link to its cloud location instead of a copy of the file.

Download photos already synced to cloud storage
If the phone’s camera app is already syncing photos to a cloud service, open that service in a browser on the PC and download the pictures you need. This can be convenient when the photos are already online, but it depends on syncing having been enabled and completed. It is not a direct transfer of unsynced files from the phone.

Windows supports sending and receiving files over Bluetooth with Android devices. It is a reasonable option for a small number of nearby files when a cable or Phone Link is not convenient. The Microsoft guidance cited here does not provide a basis for promising transfer speeds or recommending Bluetooth for a large photo library.

Keep a real PC copy when backing up
- For a straightforward photo-and-video import, use Photos over USB and verify the chosen PC save location.
- For wireless folder access, use File Explorer only when the Android and Link to Windows versions meet the listed requirements.
- For a file backup, save or copy the file to a PC folder. A file shown online-only through File Explorer is not proof that a local backup exists.
- For occasional individual files, Phone Link or Bluetooth may be more convenient; for already-synced images, download them through the cloud service’s browser interface.
