How to transfer Google Password Manager passkeys between apps

Android’s credential-transfer flow moves passwords and passkeys between supported managers without a downloaded file. Here’s how to start a move out of Google Password Manager and what to check first.

Android now lets you transfer passwords and passkeys directly between supported password managers, without downloading a file. To move credentials out of Google Password Manager, start the import from the destination manager, then approve the export in Google Password Manager. Google announced the feature on September 10, 2026; the steps below reflect its Android instructions available October 7, 2026.

Which password managers can take part?

Google lists Google Password Manager, 1Password, Bitwarden Password Manager, and Dashlane as managers where the transfer experience is available. The source and destination apps both need to support the flow, so a listed manager does not guarantee every app version or credential will transfer. Google says the feature is compatible with Android 8 and later.

Google’s announcement describes the new flow as a way to move passwords and passkeys between managers without file downloads. The Android version requirement is a compatibility floor, not a guarantee that every device, app, or stored credential will work.

Move passkeys and passwords out of Google Password Manager

  1. Open the destination password manager. Choose its option to import passwords from another app.
  2. Verify your identity if prompted. Select the Google Account and the credentials you want to transfer.
  3. Approve the export in Google Password Manager. When it opens, choose Export and complete any requested device authentication. Google requires a screen lock for export.
  4. Complete any passkey-specific prompt. You may need the old device’s screen lock or your Google Password Manager PIN to use passkeys on a new device. If importing passkeys from another manager, that manager may ask for its recovery key.
  5. Check the destination vault. Confirm that important credentials arrived and that you can use them before relying on the new manager as your only copy.

Google’s Android import and export instructions describe the authentication and approval flow. Keeping access to the old manager until you have checked essential accounts is a practical safeguard, not a requirement imposed by Google.

How to move credentials into Google Password Manager instead

  1. Open Google Password Manager settings and choose Import passwords and passkeys.
  2. Select the source manager and authenticate there if asked.
  3. Authorize the export in the source manager and complete the transfer.

Google advises users to transfer credentials only from a third-party manager they trust. The specific prompts can vary by source manager.

Why this is different from exporting a CSV

Google documents CSV as a separate import and export route for passwords. The Android manager-to-manager transfer can move passwords and passkeys through the password-manager flow; it is not the same as downloading a password file. If you use the CSV route, treat the file as sensitive: Google warns that someone with access to the device may be able to open it if it remains there. Delete it when it is no longer needed.

What happens to credentials during the transfer?

Android’s credential-transfer framework facilitates a same-device exchange between credential providers using FIDO Credential Exchange Format (CXF). Android coordinates the exchange, presents available providers, and returns you to the source provider to select, review, and authorize what moves. According to Android’s technical documentation, the framework does not expose raw credentials to Android or unauthenticated apps.

This describes the framework’s design; it is not a promise that every provider, device, app version, or transfer is risk-free. You still authorize the transfer and should choose a destination manager you trust.

Which passkeys may not move with your Google account?

Not every passkey associated with your browsing or device activity is necessarily stored in Google Password Manager. Google distinguishes syncable Google Password Manager passkeys from device-local stores. Its passkey management guidance says Windows Hello passkeys are not synchronized or backed up. Chrome-profile passkeys on macOS cannot be recovered if the computer is lost or the Chrome profile is deleted, and passkeys stored on security keys are not backed up and cannot be recovered if the key is lost or reset.

Passkeys use public-key cryptography and are bound to the website or app for which they were created. Google describes them as phishing-resistant. Google’s developer documentation says Google Password Manager encrypts passkey secrets end to end, so only the user can access and use them even though they are backed up to Google’s servers. These properties do not mean all passkey storage types have the same sync or recovery behavior. See Google’s passkey support documentation.

If the transfer does not work

  • The import option is missing: Check that both managers are installed and that the source and destination support Android’s transfer flow. The Android 8+ requirement alone does not ensure app-level support.
  • No credentials appear or the import fails: Google says an import may fail if no passwords are found or the data is broken. Check the selected Google Account and the credentials available in the source manager.
  • A passkey asks for another unlock method: Have the old device’s screen lock or Google Password Manager PIN available. A passkey import from another manager may require that manager’s recovery key.
  • An account is missing after the move: Keep the old manager available, check the account’s original storage location, and test access before removing the old copy. Device-local passkeys may not be part of the transferable Google Password Manager collection.
