To move downloaded games, saves, and system data to another Nintendo 3DS-family console, use Nintendo’s System Transfer process—not an SD-card copy by itself. First check the model-specific instructions, prepare both systems, and choose a transfer method that fits the target card’s capacity. Nintendo’s guidance here is for North America; transfer options and restrictions may differ by region.
How do I transfer games and data to a Nintendo 3DS?
Use System Transfer when moving to another console. Nintendo’s US instructions offer a PC-based route for copying card contents in supported cases, a full local wireless transfer, and a low-capacity wireless transfer. Choose the instructions for your exact source and target models: the steps and supported combinations are not interchangeable across every 3DS-family system.

A card copy is a storage step, not a console transfer. Copying files alone does not authorize downloaded content on another system. Nintendo cautions: “Do not swap between multiple SD Cards, or swap your SD Card between multiple systems.” Follow the SD-card copy instructions only when they are part of the supported transfer method for your setup.
Check the consoles and transfer requirements first
- Identify the exact source and target models, such as Nintendo 3DS, 3DS XL, 2DS, New Nintendo 3DS, or New Nintendo 3DS XL, and note the type and capacity of each card.
- Have both systems available, connected to the internet, and updated to the latest system software required by Nintendo’s instructions.
- For the North American transfer process, make sure the systems have matching region settings and that no Nintendo Network ID (NNID) is linked to the target console.
- Check that the target card has enough room if you want downloaded games and applications included in the transfer.
- Use Nintendo’s model-specific steps for the source-and-target pairing. The North American support overview says cross-region system transfers are unsupported.
Nintendo’s overview also says you must wait seven days before attempting another system transfer. Treat that as Nintendo’s stated restriction, not as a general guarantee that every transfer can be repeated after that interval.

Choose a transfer method that fits your setup
| Method | What happens to downloaded content | What you need or should check | Time and trade-off |
|---|---|---|---|
| PC-based card copy | Copies card data as directed for supported setups; use System Transfer instructions for the console change itself. | A computer with an SD-card slot or reader; a microSD adapter if needed; and, for certain New Nintendo 3DS systems, a size #0 crosshead screwdriver. Confirm the target card is large enough. | Requires handling cards and copying folders. Nintendo recommends this route for some New Nintendo 3DS setups; follow the branch for your hardware. |
| Full local wireless transfer | Moves current content over local wireless when the target has sufficient space. | Both systems, power for the duration, and enough target microSD capacity for the source downloads. | Nintendo says the process can take more than four hours depending on the amount of data. Keep both systems powered and allow for a lengthy transfer. |
| Low-capacity wireless transfer | Moves system data but leaves downloaded games and applications off the target initially; Nintendo’s guide says they can be redownloaded afterward and saves restored. | Both systems and a connection as required by Nintendo’s transfer instructions. This is an option when the target lacks room for all downloaded content. | Downloaded titles are not all moved during the initial transfer, so availability and redownloading matter. |
The available route depends on the models and card capacities involved. Do not assume a PC-based procedure written for a New Nintendo 3DS applies to a standard 3DS, 3DS XL, or 2DS.
Run System Transfer on the matching models
Standard 3DS, 3DS XL, and 2DS systems
Nintendo’s North American instructions for standard 3DS/3DS XL/2DS systems direct users to start on both consoles at System Settings → Other Settings → System Transfer. Select the send option on the source and the receive option on the target, then follow the on-screen prompts. Confirm the models match the branch you selected before proceeding.

Other 3DS-family combinations
For New Nintendo 3DS-family systems or mixed model pairings, open Nintendo’s system-transfer guide and select the exact source and target models. Follow its prompts for the chosen method; do not substitute the standard-system steps if Nintendo provides a different branch for your hardware.
Use Nintendo’s North American system-transfer instructions for the current model-specific route. They also describe the low-capacity and PC-based options.

Copy SD or microSD card contents safely on a PC
When Nintendo’s instructions call for a computer-based copy, copy the folders as a whole rather than selecting individual files from inside the Nintendo 3DS folder. Keep the original card unchanged until the target card has been checked in the new system.
- Use the card and computer setup specified for your console: an SD or microSD card as applicable, a computer card slot or reader, and a microSD adapter if your computer requires one.
- For certain New Nintendo 3DS systems, remove the card using a size #0 crosshead screwdriver, following Nintendo’s hardware instructions.
- Copy the complete folders from the source card to the target card as directed. Do not cherry-pick files within the Nintendo 3DS folder.
- Safely eject the target card, install it in the target system as instructed, and verify that the expected content appears before altering or reusing the original card.
Nintendo’s SD and microSD card transfer instructions explain the supported copying procedure and card handling. A copied card alone is not a substitute for the system-transfer process.

Know where your game saves are stored
- Downloaded games: Nintendo says their save data is stored on the SD card.
- Cartridge games: Save data for Game Card versions is stored on the Game Card itself. Copying the console’s SD card does not move a cartridge save.
Nintendo’s Nintendo 3DS SD Card FAQ covers the distinction between card-stored and Game Card save data. If you are moving a physical game, keep its cartridge; its save is not a file to transfer by copying the console SD card.

Nintendo ended sales of Nintendo 3DS software and DLC through the eShop on March 27, 2023. That date does not establish that every title remains downloadable for every account. If you choose the low-capacity transfer route, check Nintendo’s guidance and the title/account situation before relying on redownloading a particular game or add-on.
