Choose USB if you want to browse files or move many files in a repeatable workflow. Choose a wireless option for a nearby send if your phone supports it. The QR route works through a browser but has a daily transfer limit and a download window. The available guidance does not establish which method is fastest.

How to transfer files from Android to Mac with USB
Set up OpenMTP
OpenMTP is a free, open-source macOS app for Android devices using MTP. Its official page lists macOS 10.14 or later and downloads for Apple Silicon and Intel Macs.

- Download and install OpenMTP from its official site.
- Connect the Android phone to the Mac using a cable that supports data transfer. Confirm that the cable’s connector fits both devices.
- Unlock the phone. If an Android USB notification or prompt appears, choose File Transfer, MTP, or Transfer files.
- Open OpenMTP and browse the phone’s files. Select the files you want to copy to the Mac.
Android’s file-transfer mode is essential: a phone connected in charging-only mode will not expose its files for browsing. OpenMTP’s setup guidance also recommends closing other applications that may be accessing USB devices if the connection conflicts.

How to send files wirelessly with Quick Share
Quick Share to AirDrop
Google supports Quick Share-to-AirDrop sharing on eligible Android devices. Confirm that your phone model supports the feature before relying on this route; availability varies.
- On the receiving Mac, set AirDrop visibility to Everyone for 10 minutes.
- On Android, select the files, open Quick Share, and choose the Mac when it appears.
- Accept the incoming transfer on the Mac.
Google’s current guidance allows up to 1,000 files per share session and up to 20 macOS or iOS receivers. These are sharing limits, not a promise that every Android device supports AirDrop interoperability.

Quick Share using a QR code
If the phone lacks Quick Share-to-AirDrop support, Google documents a QR-code sharing route. Display the QR code from Quick Share, scan it with the Mac, then download the files in a browser. Google’s guidance sets a limit of up to 10 GB per 24 hours and says the files remain available for download for 24 hours.
Why does my Android phone only charge when connected to my Mac?
- Check the USB mode: Unlock the phone and choose File Transfer, MTP, or Transfer files from its USB notification or prompt.
- Try another cable: Some USB cables carry power but cannot transfer data. Google notes this as a possible cause of failed USB file transfers; it is general cable troubleshooting, not a Mac-specific procedure.
- Close other USB apps: OpenMTP advises closing other applications that may be reading USB devices if it cannot connect.
- Check device eligibility for wireless sharing: Quick Share-to-AirDrop is not available on every Android phone. Use the QR route if your device supports that option but not AirDrop interoperability.
What the available guidance does—and does not—establish
OpenMTP and Google document workable wired and wireless paths, but their guidance does not establish comparative transfer speeds, reliability rates, or compatibility across every Android manufacturer and Mac configuration. Treat wireless eligibility as device-specific, and check current Google guidance for your phone model before depending on Quick Share-to-AirDrop.
