Yes—you can send an EPUB book to a Kindle. Amazon recommends Send to Kindle, its wireless transfer service, which accepts EPUB files up to 200 MB each. USB transfer is another option, but the steps depend on your computer and Kindle model.
Choose a transfer method
| Method | What you need | Best for |
|---|---|---|
| Send to Kindle | The EPUB file, an Amazon account, and Wi-Fi on the Kindle | A wireless transfer with fewer model-specific steps |
| USB | A USB cable and a computer; Mac users may also need Amazon’s app, depending on Kindle model | Copying a file directly from a computer when wireless transfer is not convenient |
Amazon recommends its wireless service and says Send to Kindle documents can be sent to Kindle devices and apps at no additional cost. Its stated maximum is 200 MB per file; this is a service limit, not a recurring allowance.

Send an EPUB with Send to Kindle
- Open Amazon’s Send to Kindle service or another Send to Kindle option documented by Amazon.
- Select the EPUB file and send it to the Kindle account or device where you want to read it.
- Connect the Kindle to Wi-Fi, then sync or check its library for the book.
If the book does not show up, check that the selected file is an EPUB, is no larger than Amazon’s 200 MB per-file limit, and was sent to the intended account or device.

On Windows
- Connect the Kindle to the computer with the USB cable supplied with the device.
- Open File Explorer and locate the Kindle as an external storage device.
- Copy the EPUB into the appropriate Kindle folder, then use the Kindle’s on-screen Disconnect button if available before unplugging. Amazon also instructs users to disconnect by unplugging when that button is not available.
Amazon says Windows users do not need a separate application for USB file transfer. Keep the complete transfer path at 256 characters or fewer. Rename, compress, or extract files on the computer rather than within the Kindle file system.

On Mac
Check the Kindle model before connecting it. Under Amazon’s current instructions, Kindle Scribe and Kindle models released in 2024 require a separate app such as Send to Kindle for Mac to manage USB files. Earlier models generally do not. Amazon’s USB File Manager supports Intel and M1–M3 Macs running macOS 12 or later.
- Install and open the Amazon app required for your model, then open USB File Manager.
- Connect the Kindle with the supplied USB cable.
- Drag the EPUB into the Kindle’s Documents folder. The manager supports drag-and-drop, not more advanced file operations.
- Disconnect with the Kindle’s on-screen Disconnect button if available, or unplug as Amazon instructs.
Troubleshoot a book that does not appear
- Check the route and destination. For Send to Kindle, verify the file and intended account or device, then check the Kindle library after Wi-Fi sync.
- Check the USB folder. For Amazon’s documented Mac USB File Manager workflow, the destination is Documents. On Windows, confirm that the file is in the appropriate Kindle folder.
- Check DRM status when transferring by USB. Amazon’s book-preview transfer instructions say Kindle recognizes transferred book files only when they are free of DRM and placed in the correct folder type. That statement appears in a KDP preview context, so it should not be treated as a universal explanation for every transfer failure.
- Check the transfer path on Windows. Amazon warns that the full path should not exceed 256 characters.
What EPUB support means for reading features
EPUB being supported does not guarantee that every Kindle device or app offers identical features. Amazon distinguishes annotation features among Kindle Scribe, other Kindle e-readers, and Kindle apps. It specifically says Kindle Scribe does not currently support handwriting features in EPUB comics, manga, and children’s books.

Do you need to buy a USB cable?
Usually not. Amazon recommends wireless Send to Kindle and says to use the USB cable included with the Kindle. A replacement is relevant only if the supplied cable is missing or unsuitable; check the connector and data compatibility for your exact model before buying one. Amazon also says it cannot guarantee third-party software’s security, functionality, or reliability, so avoid relying on unverified transfer utilities.
