How to Transfer DRM-Free Ebooks to an E-Reader From a Phone or Computer

The right ebook-transfer method depends on the reader, file type and whether you have a computer. Follow these verified routes for Kindle, Kobo and PocketBook.

To transfer a DRM-free ebook, first check its file type and your e-reader’s supported transfer methods. For a computer, USB copying is a straightforward option for many Kobo and PocketBook readers; Kindle users can send EPUB or PDF files through Amazon’s Send to Kindle service. Phone-only options vary by device: Kindle supports document sending through its app or website, while Kobo’s documented routes are limited to particular apps and models.

Before you transfer: check the file and the destination

Look at the file extension (such as .epub or .pdf) and confirm that the ebook is actually unprotected. A transfer method cannot remove DRM. Kobo says an EPUB or PDF with an .acsm extension is DRM-protected; Kobo’s Adobe DRM workflow requires Adobe Digital Editions to transfer a book to a Kobo eReader, while Social DRM files can be read without ADE. Its support page also says ADE works with Kobo eReaders, not Kobo apps. See Kobo’s format and DRM guidance.

Support depends on the device, app, model, firmware and transfer route. EPUB and PDF are common in the methods below, but do not assume that a format supported by an e-reader is also supported by its companion app or every import method.

Choose a transfer route

Destination From a computer From a phone only
Kindle Send to Kindle by web, desktop app or authorized email; USB file management is also available, subject to model and operating system. Use the Kindle app’s document-sending option or Send to Kindle on the web.
Kobo eReader Copy a non-protected EPUB or PDF to the reader over USB. Some models also support Google Drive or Dropbox loading. Email-to-Dropbox is documented for certain Kobo models, with specific account, software and Wi-Fi requirements.
Kobo Books app on Android Copy a non-protected EPUB onto the Android device, then use the app’s Import Items feature. This imports to the app, not a Kobo eReader, and does not accept PDF by this method. The documented import procedure requires moving the file onto the Android device first; it is not a general phone-to-eReader transfer.
PocketBook eReader Use USB manual transfer or PocketBook Cloud if configured. Cloud sync may be an option where configured; check the model and account setup.

Send a file to Kindle

Amazon’s Send to Kindle service accepts EPUB and PDF, among other document and image types, and can add documents to the Kindle library on Kindle devices and apps at no additional cost. An EPUB sent this way is delivered as a personal document; it is not the same as copying a raw EPUB over USB and opening it as a native Kindle ebook. Amazon documents web upload, authorized email, iOS and Android app sending, and desktop applications on its Send to Kindle help page.

#1 Best Overall
Amazon Kindle 16 GB (2024 model) - Light and compact, with fast page turns, and high contrast ratio - Matcha
  • Light and compact - With adjustable brightness, high contrast ratio, and fast page turns.
  • Effortless reading in any light - Read comfortably with a 6“ glare-free display, adjustable front light—now 25% brighter at max setting—and dark mode.
  • Escape into your books - Tune out messages, emails, and social media with a distraction-free reading experience.
  • Read for a while - Get up to 6 weeks of battery life on a single charge.
  • Take your library with you – 16 GB storage holds thousands of books.
  1. On a phone, save the DRM-free EPUB or PDF in Files or Downloads. On a computer, locate the file you want to send.
  2. Use Send to Kindle for Web, the Kindle app’s document-sending option, a desktop app, or an authorized Kindle email address.
  3. If using the web upload, Amazon’s UK help page lists a maximum of 200 MB per document. Turn on “Add to your library” if you want the document available for download on other devices linked to the account.
  4. Connect the target Kindle to the internet, ensure it is signed in to the intended Amazon account, and wait for the document to arrive or sync.

Amazon also provides USB file-transfer instructions, but the workflow varies by model and operating system. Its current help page says Kindle Scribe and Kindle devices released in 2024 require a separate application for the Mac USB file-management workflow it describes; Windows devices appear as external storage. Check the current Kindle USB instructions for your exact model before copying files.

Copy EPUB or PDF to a Kobo eReader from a computer

Kobo’s USB method accepts non-protected EPUB and PDF files. Follow the sequence in Kobo’s instructions:

  • Take your library with you - 16 GB storage holds thousands of books.
  1. Turn on the eReader and connect it to the computer, preferably directly with the supplied cable.
  2. When the “Computer detected” message appears on the eReader, tap “Connect.”
  3. Open the “KOBOeReader” drive on the computer and drag the EPUB or PDF file onto it.
  4. Eject the drive safely, unplug the reader and wait for “Importing content” to finish.
  5. Open the book from “My Books.”

Kobo says content imported this way remains on the device used for import; syncing does not make it appear on the user’s other Kobo readers or apps. Google Drive and Dropbox are additional loading methods listed by Kobo, but availability and steps can vary by model.

Use a phone with Kobo: distinguish the app from the eReader

Import an EPUB into the Kobo Books app on Android

Kobo’s Android import instructions put the item in the Kobo Books app library, not on a separate Kobo eReader. The method accepts non-protected EPUB files and explicitly does not import PDF. Its documented steps first move the file from a computer to the Android phone or tablet; then, in the app, open “Profile” and choose “Import Items.” See Kobo’s Android import instructions for the file-copy steps for Windows and Mac. Kobo says items imported this way stay on the device used for import and will not appear in other readers or apps after syncing.

Phone-only email-to-Dropbox for selected Kobo models

Kobo’s October 9, 2025 guide describes an email-to-Dropbox route for unlocked EPUB or PDF files on Kobo Forma, Kobo Sage, Kobo Elipsa, Kobo Elipsa 2E and Kobo Libra Colour. It requires a paid Dropbox account, an internet-enabled device, and a compatible Kobo connected to Wi-Fi and running software version 4.18 or later. Set up Dropbox’s email-to-Dropbox feature, send the file as an attachment from the registered sender address to the unique Dropbox address, then access the Dropbox files on the Kobo. This is a model-specific Dropbox workflow, not a universal Kobo email-import address or built-in email feature. See Kobo’s email-to-Dropbox guide for its requirements and steps.

Transfer to a PocketBook

PocketBook identifies manual USB transfer from a computer and PocketBook Cloud synchronization as common ways to add books. Its official FAQ lists EPUB and PDF among supported book formats and says Cloud can synchronize books, reading positions, notes and bookmarks across devices. Check the exact model and firmware for format support before transferring; PocketBook’s format list includes version-dependent cases and protected-book workflows that may require an Adobe ID.

Where the ebook file comes from matters

Do not assume every ebook purchase can be exported as an unrestricted file. Amazon KDP says that, effective January 20, 2026, verified purchasers can download EPUB and PDF files of confirmed DRM-free books through Manage Your Content and Devices. Kindle Unlimited borrowers cannot use this download access, even when a title is DRM-free. For DRM-free books published before December 9, 2025, the publisher may need to explicitly confirm downloads. Check Amazon KDP’s DRM policy for the applicable terms.

If the transfer does not work

  • The reader does not recognize the file: Verify the extension and check format support for the exact reader, app and method. Kobo publishes separate format information for eReaders and apps in its supported-formats guide.
  • The file has an .acsm extension or prompts for authorization: It is not an unrestricted EPUB or PDF. Follow the retailer’s or publisher’s authorized DRM instructions rather than treating it as a standard file copy.
  • A Kindle document has not arrived: Check that the Kindle is online, attached to the expected Amazon account, and that the sending email address is authorized where applicable. For library availability across devices, confirm “Add to your library” was enabled.
  • A Kobo import is missing elsewhere: USB-imported eReader books and Android-app imports are local to the device used for import; they are not automatically distributed to the other Kobo devices or apps.
  • A USB reader does not appear on the computer: Confirm the reader is powered on and connected with a data-capable cable, then use the device’s on-screen connection prompt. Kindle USB procedures can differ by model and operating system, so consult the current model-specific help page.
