The safest way to move data to a Pixel 10 is to transfer it during the phone’s first-time setup. Back up the old Android phone, charge both devices, connect them to reliable Wi-Fi, then pair them when the Pixel asks to copy data. Pixel 8 and newer models support either wireless transfer or a USB-C data cable; the Pixel selects the suitable method. If your old phone is missing, you can restore a Google Account backup instead.
Prepare both phones before starting
Do the preparation on the old phone before turning on the Pixel 10. A transfer copies what is available and selected at that moment; it is not a substitute for a separate backup of irreplaceable files or app content.

1. Make a current backup
Run the old phone’s normal Google backup and allow it to finish. Open any app that stores its own data and use that app’s backup command as well. WhatsApp chat history, for example, should be backed up inside WhatsApp rather than assumed to be covered by the general device backup. Keep the old phone until you have checked the Pixel.

2. Sync accounts, passwords and passkeys
Confirm that the Google Account on the old phone is the account you intend to use on the Pixel. Sync Google apps, save passwords and passkeys through the services that manage them, and make sure you know the old phone’s screen lock. The Pixel can request that lock during pairing.

3. Charge, connect and position the phones
- Charge both phones so neither shuts down during copying.
- Connect both phones to strong, stable Wi-Fi and keep them close together.
- Have a USB-C to USB-C cable that supports data transfer available if Wi-Fi is weak. A charge-only cable cannot carry the transfer.
- Check free storage on the Pixel 10. Google warns that copying can pause when the destination is full.
4. Prepare messages and the SIM
Update Google Messages on the old phone and make it the default messaging app before starting. If messages are stored on the old phone’s SIM, move them to the phone’s main storage when the phone provides that option. The Pixel and your carrier will guide you through moving a physical SIM or activating an eSIM during setup.
Choose wireless or a USB-C cable
For Pixel 8 and later, including Pixel 10, Google supports both wireless transfer and a wired USB-C connection. During setup the Pixel evaluates the connection and uses the available method. Wireless is convenient when both phones have dependable Wi-Fi. A cable is useful when Wi-Fi is slow, congested or unreliable.
| Method | What you need | When it is preferable | Important limitation |
|---|---|---|---|
| Wireless | Both phones powered on, nearby and connected to strong Wi-Fi | No extra accessory; easiest when the old phone is already online | A weak or interrupted Wi-Fi connection can slow or interrupt copying |
| USB-C to USB-C | A USB-C cable with data support and a connector that fits the old phone | Wi-Fi is weak or you prefer a direct connection | A charge-only cable will not transfer data |
For an Android-to-Pixel connection, Google says a Quick Switch Adapter is not needed when you use USB-C to USB-C. Do not buy an adapter solely for this transfer. If the old Android phone uses a different connector, use a compatible data cable and follow the Pixel’s on-screen instructions; the cable must physically and electronically support that connection.

- Start the Pixel. Turn on the Pixel 10, select the requested language and region, and continue until setup offers to copy data from a Pixel or Android device.
- Choose the Android transfer option. Select the option to copy from your previous Android phone. The Pixel displays instructions for pairing the devices.
- Pair the phones. On Pixel 8 and later, Google describes using the setup notification and a QR code. Follow the exact prompt shown on the Pixel and approve the connection on the old phone.
- Verify ownership. Enter the old phone’s screen lock when the Pixel asks. This allows the transfer process to access the selected information.
- Select categories. Review the list instead of accepting it blindly. Select the categories you need, note any warnings beside an item, and start copying.
- Keep the process undisturbed. Leave both phones powered on, nearby and connected. Avoid opening demanding apps or disconnecting the cable. The Pixel may finish copying first and then download or install apps.
- Complete network and cellular setup. Follow the prompts for Wi-Fi, a physical SIM or an eSIM, and your Google Account. Carrier activation steps vary, so use the instructions displayed for your line.
- Wait for app installation. Apps can continue downloading after the main copy appears complete. A full Pixel can pause this work; free space before retrying rather than repeatedly restarting the transfer.
What the Pixel transfer can copy
Google’s Pixel transfer table lists the following common categories for Android-to-Pixel moves. Availability can depend on the app, account and storage on each phone.
| Category | What to expect |
|---|---|
| Google Accounts | Accounts can be added during setup; sign-in or verification may still be required. |
| Passwords and passkeys | These depend on the Google apps or services that store and sync them. Check that the relevant Google password or passkey manager is enabled. |
| Device settings | Supported settings may be copied, but not every manufacturer-specific setting has an equivalent on Pixel. |
| Text messages and attachments | Messages and attached media can transfer. Updating Google Messages and moving SIM-stored messages to main storage helps the process. |
| Photos and videos | Items available to the transfer process can be copied; verify local folders and cloud libraries separately. |
| Contacts | Contacts that are synced or stored in supported locations can transfer. Contacts tied to another account may require that account to be added again. |
| Calendar events | Events synchronized with supported Google services can transfer. Non-Google calendars may need their account or app restored separately. |
| Files and folders | Supported files and folders can copy, subject to storage and folder visibility. |
| Wi-Fi details | Saved Wi-Fi information may transfer, but you may still need to reconnect to networks that require a portal or additional approval. |
| Call history | Supported call records can transfer. |
| WhatsApp chat history | Use WhatsApp’s own backup first, then verify chats in WhatsApp on the Pixel. |
| Apps | Apps downloaded or purchased through Google Play can be reinstalled. The app itself may download after copying. |
| MP3 and other audio files | Supported locally stored audio can transfer; verify folders that were hidden or managed by another app. |
| Custom-photo wallpaper | A custom photo used as wallpaper can be included where supported. |
| Notes and alarms | Transfer depends on using compatible Google apps; manufacturer note or alarm apps are not guaranteed to carry over. |
| Recordings | Google’s table says recordings do not transfer from another Android phone. |
| Home-screen layout | Google’s table says the layout does not transfer from another Android phone, so plan to arrange icons and widgets again. |
Data that may not transfer
Transfer is not a universal clone. Google specifically warns that data stored in apps made for another phone manufacturer may not move. An app can reinstall while its private data, downloads or settings remain on the old device.
- Downloads such as PDFs and files in hidden folders may be omitted.
- Apps installed outside Google Play may not be copied or reinstalled automatically.
- Data from apps that do not use Android backup may stay on the old phone.
- Non-Google accounts and the data held by those accounts may require a fresh sign-in or separate export.
- Contacts and calendars that are not synchronized with Google may not appear until their original account or app is restored.
- Manufacturer-specific notes, alarms, recordings and home-screen arrangements have explicit limitations in Google’s transfer table.
Before wiping the old phone, open your most important apps on the Pixel and check recent records, saved items, downloaded documents, photos, messages and two-factor authentication methods. Keep a separate copy of anything the transfer does not clearly confirm.

- Open Settings on the Pixel 10.
- Tap Accounts & backup.
- Tap Android Switch, then Start.
- Follow the pairing instructions, choose the categories to add and begin the copy.
Keep the old phone available and connected while Android Switch runs. This later transfer is an addition to the Pixel’s existing contents, not a reason to erase information already on the Pixel. Review the selections carefully so you do not overwrite your intended arrangement or create duplicate contacts and files.
Restore when the old Android phone is unavailable
If the old phone is lost, damaged or already unavailable, a Google Account backup can supply the fallback. During Pixel setup, choose the option to restore from the available backup and select the previous device and categories offered.
On Pixel 9 and later, Google also documents starting a cloud restore after setup through Settings > Accounts & backup > Android Switch > Start. The cloud-restore instructions state that only one previous device can be restored this way unless the Pixel is reset to restore from a different device. Confirm that the backup belongs to the correct Google Account before selecting it.

Troubleshoot a transfer that fails or stops
The Pixel cannot find the old phone
- Unlock the old phone and keep both devices close.
- Confirm both phones are on the same reliable Wi-Fi network when using wireless transfer.
- Follow the Pixel’s pairing notification and QR-code instructions again rather than starting a separate sharing feature.
- Restart both phones if the pairing prompt has expired, then return to the setup copy step.
The wireless transfer is slow or interrupted
Move closer to the Wi-Fi access point, pause other large network activity and keep the phones together. If Wi-Fi remains unreliable, switch to a USB-C to USB-C data cable. Google’s Pixel preparation guidance specifically suggests having a cable when Wi-Fi is weak.
The cable is connected but nothing copies
Check that the cable supports data, not only charging, and that its connectors fit both phones securely. Try another known data-capable USB-C cable if the Pixel does not offer a copy prompt. For Android-to-Pixel transfers, do not add a Quick Switch Adapter when a direct USB-C to USB-C connection is available.
Messages are missing
Update Google Messages on the old phone, make it the default messaging app, and check whether messages were stored on the SIM. Move SIM-stored messages to the phone’s main storage when possible, then repeat the message category transfer. Verify both recent conversations and attachments on the Pixel.
Apps appear but their data is absent
Sign in to the app on the Pixel and check its own restore or import option. If the app does not use Android backup, or if it is specific to another manufacturer, its private data may not be transferable through Pixel setup. Use the old app’s export or backup function before erasing the old phone.

The transfer pauses partway through
Check free storage on the Pixel. Delete or move unnecessary files, restart the transfer and select only the categories you still need. Keep both phones charged and connected during the retry.
Verify the Pixel before erasing the old phone
Use this checklist after setup and after any post-setup Android Switch run:
- Make a test call and send a test message.
- Open several recent conversations and confirm important attachments.
- Check contacts, calendar events and call history.
- Browse camera photos, videos, downloaded files and audio folders.
- Open WhatsApp and confirm that the expected chat history restored.
- Sign in to essential apps and verify records, subscriptions and saved settings.
- Test password and passkey access before relying on the Pixel for account sign-ins.
- Reconnect to work, school or captive-portal Wi-Fi networks that need extra authentication.
- Confirm SIM or eSIM activation and mobile data.
- Keep the old phone and its backup until these checks are complete.
Once the checks pass, you can securely erase the old Android phone according to its manufacturer’s reset procedure. If anything is missing, keep the old device intact and use its app-specific export, a fresh Google backup or Android Switch again before resetting it.
Quick Recap
Which transfer route should you use?
| Your situation | Best route | Reason |
|---|---|---|
| You are setting up the Pixel 10 and Wi-Fi is reliable | Initial wireless transfer | No accessory is required and the setup flow guides pairing and category selection. |
| You are setting up the Pixel 10 and Wi-Fi is weak | Initial transfer with a USB-C data cable | A wired connection avoids depending on an unstable wireless link. |
