The safest iPhone-to-Pixel move uses two separate checks: transfer message history with a cable during Pixel setup, and handle iCloud-only photos through Google Photos or Apple’s iCloud Photos transfer service. Turn off iMessage and FaceTime before moving the number, keep both phones until you verify the result, and do not erase the iPhone merely because setup finished.
Pixel 10 and later use a newer transfer flow that can work wirelessly, by cable, or with both. Older Pixel models have different wired and wireless capabilities. Because message history, future message delivery, locally stored photos, and iCloud-only photos follow different paths, matching each type of data to the right method is what prevents avoidable gaps.

What moves during an iPhone-to-Pixel transfer
There is no single switch that guarantees an identical copy of every item in an iPhone library. Google’s transfer tools copy eligible data from the device, while Apple’s separate service copies photos from iCloud. Use this distinction before you begin:
| Data or service | How to handle it | Important qualification |
|---|---|---|
| Existing SMS and iMessage history | Select messages during the Pixel transfer, preferably with a cable | Google says indexing can take up to 24 hours after transfer; unsupported or unusual conversations may not appear |
| New texts after the number moves | Turn off iMessage and FaceTime, or deregister the number with Apple after switching | This changes future routing; it does not copy old conversations |
| Photos saved on the iPhone | Include photos in the normal device-copy flow | The described flow covers photos stored locally on the iPhone |
| Photos stored only in iCloud | Sync them with Google Photos on the iPhone or request Apple’s direct iCloud Photos transfer to Google Photos | The direct copy can omit some formats, albums, metadata and Live Photo behavior |
| Apps and other device data | Review the categories shown on the Pixel copy screen | Availability varies by Pixel generation, software version and app support |
Think of the migration as a copy followed by verification. Neither Google nor Apple promises that every item, edit, album structure or special message type will reproduce perfectly in every configuration.

Prepare both phones before connecting them
Charge, unlock and update
- Charge the iPhone and Pixel, and keep both unlocked during the transfer.
- Install available software updates on the iPhone. If Pixel setup requests an update, complete it before continuing.
- Check free storage on the Pixel. Google warns that a transfer can pause when the destination is full.
- Have a strong Wi-Fi connection available. Newer wireless flows also require Bluetooth.
- Keep the iPhone nearby until all message and photo checks are complete.
Check the ports and cable
Use a cable that carries data, not a charge-only lead. A recent USB-C iPhone can connect to a Pixel with a USB-C-to-USB-C cable. An iPhone X or older normally needs a Lightning-to-USB-C cable, or a Lightning-to-USB-A cable used with a compatible Quick Switch Adapter. Do not buy an adapter until you identify the ports on both phones; supported Pixel flows can also transfer wirelessly.
Turn off iMessage and FaceTime
On the iPhone, disable iMessage and FaceTime before moving the SIM or phone number. This helps future messages arrive as ordinary texts on the Pixel instead of remaining associated with Apple’s messaging service.
If the iPhone is already gone and messages sent to the number still go to iMessage, use Apple’s online iMessage deregistration process. Deregistration affects delivery of new messages. It cannot restore or copy historical conversations that were not transferred.

| Pixel situation | Connection | Message capability stated by Google | Best use |
|---|---|---|---|
| Pixel 10 or later, upgraded transfer flow | Wireless, cable, or both | Google lists texts and iMessages with attachments among available data types | Use the on-screen pairing flow; keep Wi-Fi and Bluetooth enabled for wireless transfer |
| Older Pixel, classic wired flow | Compatible cable | Google lists text messages and iMessages with attachments | Preferred route when message history matters |
| Older Pixel, classic wireless flow | Wireless | Messages are not listed in the classic wireless data set | Useful for eligible non-message data; choose a cable if you need old conversations |
| Any Pixel after setup | Post-setup Android Switch transfer | Google recommends this when selected messages still do not appear | Recovery attempt after checking selection and waiting for indexing |
| Photos that exist only in iCloud | Cloud-to-cloud transfer or Google Photos sync | Not part of a simple local-device copy | Use one of the photo-specific methods described below |
Transfer data during Pixel setup
1. Start the Pixel copy process
- Turn on the Pixel and begin setup.
- When setup offers to copy apps and data, choose the transfer option for an iPhone.
- Read the prompts for your Pixel generation. Pixel 10 and later may offer pairing with the iPhone and a choice of wireless, wired or combined transfer.
- For an older Pixel, connect the data cable when requested. Unlock the iPhone and approve any trust or access prompt that appears.
2. Select the categories you actually need
On the copy screen, select messages and photos rather than assuming every category is enabled. Confirm that message history is selected before proceeding. If the screen presents separate entries for text messages or iMessages, select each relevant entry.
Leave both devices connected and awake until the Pixel reports completion. A transfer that appears finished can still require time for Google Messages to index the imported history.
3. Let message indexing finish
Google says imported message history can take up to 24 hours to become visible in Google Messages. During that period, avoid repeatedly resetting the phones or deleting the source conversations. After 24 hours, check the troubleshooting steps below before considering another reset.
Move old messages without confusing them with new-message delivery
Historical conversations
Old conversations are copied as part of the data-selection process. Google’s troubleshooting guidance specifically recommends a cable for iPhone message transfer. It lists texts and iMessages with attachments in supported wired paths, but that is not a promise that every thread, attachment, reaction, or app-specific conversation will migrate.

Future messages
Turning off iMessage, or deregistering the number after the move, controls where new messages are delivered. It does not fill gaps in the imported history. Test delivery by having someone send a new ordinary text to the phone number after the Pixel has cellular service.
If messages are missing
- Open Google Messages and allow the full 24-hour indexing window to pass.
- Confirm that messages were selected on the original copy screen.
- Install the current Google Messages update offered for the Pixel.
- Check that iMessage is disabled on the iPhone, or deregister the number if the iPhone is no longer available.
- On the Pixel, open Settings and launch the post-setup Android Switch transfer option. The exact label can vary by model and software.
- Reconnect the iPhone with the appropriate data cable and run the message transfer again if the post-setup flow requests it.
Do not erase the iPhone while this recovery attempt is still pending. If a particular conversation remains absent after the supported transfer paths, treat it as a compatibility limitation rather than assuming that another factory reset will create a complete copy.
Transfer photos saved on the iPhone
Photos stored locally
Include photos in the normal Pixel device-copy screen. Google describes this path as transferring photos saved locally on the iPhone. Review the iPhone’s storage settings first if you use an optimization feature that keeps full-resolution originals in iCloud while smaller previews remain on the phone; cloud-only originals need a separate method.

Move iCloud-only photos to Google Photos
You have two supported approaches. Choose based on whether you want an active sync from the iPhone or a one-time copy from Apple’s cloud.
Option A: Sync with Google Photos on the iPhone
- Install Google Photos on the iPhone and sign in to the Google account you will use on the Pixel.
- Enable photo backup and allow the app to finish uploading the library while the iPhone is on power and reliable Wi-Fi.
- Check the Google Photos account from the Pixel before deleting anything on the iPhone.
This route is useful when you want Google Photos to read the iPhone library directly and when preserving original files or finding HEIF photos matters. Upload time depends on library size and connection speed, so the Pixel can be used while the backup continues.
Option B: Request Apple’s direct iCloud Photos copy
Apple’s transfer service sends a copy from iCloud Photos to Google Photos without removing or changing the Apple-stored library. Apple says the transfer generally takes three to seven days. Its regional documentation says the service is available in over 240 countries, but availability and account eligibility can vary.
Recommended Free Tools
Before requesting the copy, make sure you have:
- iCloud Photos enabled on the Apple Account.
- Two-factor authentication enabled for that Apple Account.
- A Google account ready to receive the photos.
- Enough available Google storage for the requested library.
If the Google storage limit is reached during the transfer, Apple warns that some items may not transfer. Keep the iCloud library intact until you have inspected the destination.

Know what the iCloud Photos copy does not preserve perfectly
| Library feature | What to expect |
|---|---|
| Edits | Only the latest edit of a photo is transferred |
| Duplicates | Duplicate items are represented once |
| Videos and albums | Videos transfer separately from albums, so album organization can differ |
| Shared albums | Some shared albums may not transfer |
| Smart Albums | Some Smart Albums may not transfer |
| Live Photos | Some Live Photos may be omitted or lose their original behavior |
| Metadata | Some metadata may not transfer |
| RAW files | Certain RAW files may be omitted |
These limitations apply to Apple’s direct cloud copy, not necessarily to every photo uploaded through the Google Photos app. If a specific Live Photo, RAW original, edit history or album arrangement is important, retain the iPhone copy and verify that item individually.
Verify the Pixel before wiping the iPhone
Verification is the step that turns a hopeful transfer into a safe migration. Keep the iPhone, its passcode and the Apple account available until these checks pass:
- Open several old message threads, including conversations with attachments and your most important contacts.
- Check both recent and older message dates; do not inspect only the newest thread.
- Send a test SMS to the Pixel number from another phone and confirm that it arrives as a normal text.
- In Google Photos, inspect photos from different years, recent videos and images that were edited on the iPhone.
- Check dates, locations, albums and representative Live Photos or RAW files if those formats matter to you.
- Confirm that the Google account shown on the Pixel is the account holding the transferred photos.
- Compare the Pixel’s free storage with the size of the data you expect to keep locally.
Only after these checks should you sign out of the iPhone, erase it or trade it in. A verified copy is safer than relying on a setup-complete message, especially because cloud transfers can continue for several days and message indexing can take up to 24 hours.
Troubleshoot the most common failure points
The Pixel cannot see the iPhone
- Unlock the iPhone and accept its trust or access prompt.
- Try a different data-capable cable; a charging-only cable cannot carry the transfer.
- Confirm that the cable matches both ports. USB-C iPhones generally need USB-C-to-USB-C; older Lightning iPhones need a Lightning-compatible option.
- Restart both phones and begin the transfer again from the Pixel’s setup screen.
The transfer stops partway through
- Free space on the Pixel and retry.
- Keep both devices charged and close together.
- For a wireless flow, restore Wi-Fi and Bluetooth and avoid switching networks during the copy.
- If setup requests a software update, finish it before restarting the transfer.
Photos are missing but messages arrived
Check whether the missing photos were actually stored only in iCloud. Run Google Photos backup on the iPhone or request Apple’s direct iCloud Photos copy. The normal device-copy flow is not a complete substitute for downloading cloud-only originals.
New messages still appear as iMessage
Disable iMessage and FaceTime on the old iPhone if it is available. If it is not, use Apple’s online deregistration process. Then send a new test text; this routing fix is separate from importing old history.
Which method should you use?
| Your priority | Recommended path | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Preserve old text and iMessage history | Wired Pixel transfer, with messages selected | Google’s troubleshooting guidance specifically directs iPhone message transfers to a cable |
| Use a Pixel 10 or later without a cable | Newer wireless setup flow | Supported newer Pixels can pair wirelessly, but follow the categories shown on your device |
| Move locally stored photos quickly | Include photos in device setup | Designed for photos saved on the iPhone |
| Move an iCloud-only library | Google Photos sync or Apple’s direct copy | Both address cloud-only content that a local device copy may miss |
| Preserve unusual formats or album behavior | Upload through Google Photos and keep the Apple library until checked | Apple’s direct copy may omit some Live Photos, RAW files, metadata and album structures |
Bottom line
Disable iMessage and FaceTime, use a compatible data cable for message history when possible, and treat iCloud photos as a separate transfer. Wait for Google Messages indexing, allow Apple’s cloud copy three to seven days if you choose it, and verify representative messages and photos before erasing the iPhone. This workflow greatly reduces avoidable omissions while acknowledging that no supported method guarantees a perfect replica of every message feature and photo-library structure.
