To move data from an old Android phone to a Nothing Phone, start the Nothing Phone’s setup, connect it to Wi-Fi or mobile data, and choose the Android transfer or “Copy apps and data” option when it appears. Follow the on-screen prompts to connect the phones by cable or use QR-assisted pairing if offered, then sign in to your Google Account and choose what to copy. Keep the old phone until you have checked the important data on the Nothing Phone.
Before you start
- Charge both phones and unlock the old Android phone. Keep its PIN, pattern, or password handy in case setup asks you to verify it.
- Connect the Nothing Phone to Wi-Fi or mobile data during setup. Nothing says copying will not work if the new phone is offline.
- Check that the Nothing Phone has enough available storage, and back up the old phone if possible.
- Have access to the Google Account you want to use on the Nothing Phone. Nothing recommends using a Google Account to download apps and copy content.
Transfer data during Nothing Phone setup
- Start the Nothing Phone. Turn it on and follow the initial setup screens until prompted to connect to a network. Connect to Wi-Fi or mobile data.
- Choose the Android transfer option. Select the Android-device transfer or “Copy apps and data” route shown on the screen. The exact wording and available options can differ by device and Android version.
- Connect the phones. If the Nothing Phone offers a cable transfer, connect the phones with a data-capable cable and unlock and approve the connection on the old phone when prompted. If it offers QR-assisted pairing, scan the code displayed on the Nothing Phone using the old Android phone. Follow the prompts on both devices.
- Choose what to copy. Sign in to the Google Account you want associated with the Nothing Phone, select the data categories offered, and start the transfer.
- Wait for the completion message, then check your data. Nothing says apps that do not transfer can be downloaded from Google Play. Verify important items on the Nothing Phone before erasing or handing over the old one.
Choose cable or wireless pairing
Google’s general Android setup supports both cable and wireless copying, and says both methods support the same data in that flow. Nothing’s support instructions describe a cable method in one guide and QR-assisted pairing in another. Use the method the Nothing Phone actually offers rather than assuming every model shows the same options.

What transfers—and what may need separate attention
Google lists apps and certain app data, music, photos, videos, contacts stored on the phone or SIM, text messages, most phone settings, multimedia in text messages, wallpaper, and call history among the items that may copy during Android setup. Settings coverage can vary by phone and Android version. Nothing specifically names texts, videos, contacts, calendar, and music for the cable transfer it describes.
The general copy process does not cover everything. Google says it does not copy downloads such as PDFs, media stored in hidden folders, apps installed outside Google Play, app data from apps that do not use Android backup, non-Google accounts and their data, contacts or calendars synced to non-Google services, ringtones, or certain settings. Some apps may require their own sign-in, backup, or migration process; do not assume every app or its private data will move intact.

WhatsApp and other app-specific data
For WhatsApp, Google says chats and data restore from the cloud after you sign in and open WhatsApp on the new Android phone, provided WhatsApp backup was enabled on the old phone first. Check each app’s own backup or migration steps for data that matters to you.
If the old phone is unavailable or you skipped copying
Restore from a Google Account backup
If you cannot use the old phone, Google documents restoring an available Android backup from the relevant Google Account during setup. You need access to that account and may be asked to confirm the old device’s screen lock. The available restore choices depend on what backup exists and what it contains. Google notes that backup and restore coverage varies by phone, Android version, and app; not every app backs up or restores all settings and data. Moving a backup from a newer Android version to an older one can also result in an incomplete restore.

Look for a post-setup transfer option
If you skipped copying during initial setup, Google says some devices offer a “Finish setting up” option afterward. Google also documents a post-setup copy option on Android 17 and later and on select devices running earlier versions. Availability depends on the device maker and Android version, so do not count on this route being available on every Nothing Phone.

Nothing’s support guidance estimates a cable transfer may take from a few minutes to over an hour; its QR-assisted transfer page gives a typical estimate of five minutes to one hour. Google says direct copying may take a few minutes to a few hours, while a Google backup restore can take up to 24 hours to complete fully. These are guidance estimates, not guarantees. Leave both phones powered and connected while the process runs, and allow extra time for a large transfer.

Verify the transfer before erasing the old phone
Open the Nothing Phone and check the items you rely on, such as photos and videos, contacts, messages, calendar entries, and apps. Sign in to apps that need it and confirm that their data is present. Google advises erasing the old device only after confirming that the data has copied, so keep it available until those checks are complete.
