Transfer data to the Fairphone (Gen. 6) during its initial setup: choose Copy apps & data to copy from an Android phone or iPhone, or restore a Google Account backup. A cable is Fairphone’s recommended option for Android and its most reliable option for iPhone; wireless transfer is also available. Check app-specific content separately before wiping your old phone, because not every app’s data moves automatically and WhatsApp has its own transfer process.
Choose the transfer method before setup
The Fairphone (Gen. 6) offers several routes, depending on the old phone and whether you have a backup. The main transfer and backup choices appear during the new phone’s setup at Copy apps & data. If you want to restore a Google backup, decide before finishing setup: Fairphone says restoring an earlier backup after the phone has already been set up requires a factory reset.

Fairphone calls this model the Fairphone (Gen. 6). Its support page says it launched with Android 15 and that Android 16 became available on 16 March 2026. Prepare both phones
- Charge both phones. Fairphone’s Android migration support page recommends at least 50% charge on each.
- Connect to stable Wi-Fi, and make sure you can unlock the old phone and sign in to the Google Account associated with any backup you plan to restore.
- Back up the old phone before transferring. If using a cable, check the connectors: USB-C to USB-C is a common Android option; an older phone with Micro-USB needs a Micro-USB-to-USB-C cable or adapter.
- If moving from an iPhone, turn off iMessage before beginning, as Fairphone advises, to avoid problems receiving text messages.
Transfer from an Android phone
- Start setting up the Fairphone and continue until Copy apps & data appears.
- For a wired transfer, connect the old Android phone to the Fairphone with a compatible cable, unlock the old phone and accept its copy prompt. Follow the on-screen choices on both devices.
- For a wireless transfer, select No cable, then Copy without cable. On the old phone, open the Google app, search for set up my device and follow the prompts.
- Wait for setup to finish, then check important data and apps on the Fairphone before erasing the old phone.
Fairphone lists apps, contacts, messages, photos and settings among the data that can usually transfer from Android. That does not guarantee that every app’s private data will move: game progress and chat histories are examples of content that may need a separate method. Transfer from an iPhone
- Turn off iMessage on the iPhone before starting, then begin Fairphone setup and go to the iPhone/iPad switching option.
- For a wired transfer, connect the iPhone and Fairphone with a compatible cable. Tap Trust on the iPhone if prompted, then select the data offered by setup. Fairphone’s guide describes this as the most reliable method.
- If you do not have a compatible cable, choose the wireless option and follow the setup instructions. Fairphone says this route copies only some data.
- Review the selected data and verify it on the Fairphone after setup. The guide names contacts, photos and calendars as examples; exact prompts and eligible data can depend on the iOS version and setup flow.

Restore a Google Account backup
- During setup, continue to Copy apps & data and choose the option indicating that the other device is unavailable.
- Sign in with the same Google Account used to back up the old Android phone.
- Follow the on-screen steps to choose and restore the available backup.
If the Fairphone is already set up, Fairphone says you must factory-reset it to restore an earlier backup through the setup flow. A reset erases data on the Fairphone, so save anything already added to the new phone before proceeding. See Fairphone’s backup restore instructions.

Move items that did not transfer
Use a category-specific method for content missing after the standard copy. Fairphone’s manual data transfer options describe these approaches:
- Contacts: Sync the same Google Account on both phones, or import contacts stored on a SIM through the Contacts app.
- Photos and videos: Back them up with Google Photos on the old phone and sign in to the same account on the Fairphone, or copy the DCIM folder using a computer.
- Music and other files: Copy the Music or relevant folders through a computer, or upload them to cloud storage and download them on the Fairphone.
- Calendar: Sync with the same Google Account. Fairphone also describes enabling Google calendar sync on Android or adding the Google Account on an iPhone.
- WhatsApp: Use WhatsApp’s own chat backup or transfer flow. For Android, Fairphone documents backing up to Google Drive, then installing WhatsApp on the Fairphone and restoring after verifying the phone number. For iPhone, it points to WhatsApp’s Transfer chat history → Transfer to Android flow.
To copy files through a computer, use a USB cable that supports data transfer; a charge-only cable will not work. Fairphone notes that macOS has limited built-in Android support and requires a third-party transfer app such as OpenMTP. Its computer connection guidance covers this method.

Check the Fairphone before wiping the old phone
- Open important apps and confirm that their content is present, especially WhatsApp chats and game progress.
- Check contacts, photos, messages and any files or calendar entries you rely on.
- If an app is missing, Fairphone says you can install apps through Google Play Store when using a Google Account.
Keep the old phone until you have verified the content you need. Fairphone warns that some app-specific data may not transfer through the standard migration, so a successful setup alone is not proof that every app is complete.
