The right way to transfer contacts from Samsung to iPhone depends on where the contacts are saved and whether the iPhone is still in setup. For a new iPhone, use Apple’s Move to iOS app and select contacts. If the iPhone is already set up, sync the Google or other account holding them, or import a vCard file. Import from SIM only if the contacts are actually stored on that SIM.
Choose the route that fits your iPhone
| Method | Best fit | Key limitation |
|---|---|---|
| Move to iOS | A new iPhone that is still in initial setup; can transfer contacts along with other selected data | If setup is complete, Apple says you must erase the iPhone and start setup again to use this migration route. Apple Support |
| Sync a contacts account | An iPhone that is already set up, when contacts are stored in Google or another supported account | Only contacts in the account you add will sync. Apple Support |
| Import from SIM | Contacts saved to a compatible SIM | It cannot retrieve contacts held only on the Samsung or in an online account; imported details depend on how they were saved. Apple Support |
| Import a vCard | Contacts exported as a .vcf file and delivered to the iPhone | Samsung export menus depend on the device and software version. iPhone User Guide |
Transfer contacts with Move to iOS during iPhone setup
Move to iOS is Apple’s main route for transferring selected data, including contacts, from Android while setting up a new iPhone. It is tied to initial setup, so choose this route before completing setup if you want to use it.

- On the iPhone, follow the setup screens until you reach the option to transfer data from Android, then select it.
- On the Samsung, open the Move to iOS app and follow its prompts. Enter the code shown on the iPhone and follow the connection instructions.
- Select Contacts, along with any other data you want to transfer, and wait for the iPhone’s progress bar to finish.
- Keep both phones powered and do not switch away from the transfer while it is running. Apple says a direct USB-C connection between compatible devices can speed up the broader transfer, but it is optional. Apple Support
Do not assume the transfer is complete just because the Samsung reports that it has finished. Wait for the iPhone’s progress bar to complete before continuing.
Sync contacts to an iPhone that is already set up
If the Samsung contacts are stored in Google or another supported email account, add that same account to the iPhone and turn on Contacts. Apple supports providers including Google, Microsoft Exchange, and Yahoo. This syncs contacts saved in the account; it does not fetch contacts stored only on the Samsung itself.

Import contacts from the Samsung SIM
This method is useful only if the contacts are saved on a compatible SIM that can be used with the iPhone. Insert that SIM, then go to Settings > Apps > Contacts > Import SIM Contacts. When the import finishes, open Contacts and verify the names and numbers.
Apple states, “The iPhone doesn’t store contacts on the SIM card.” SIM import is therefore a one-way fallback for contacts actually on the card, not a full phone-to-phone transfer. If the import is empty or incomplete, the missing contacts may be stored in an online account or elsewhere on the Samsung. The details imported also depend on what information was saved to the SIM. See Apple’s SIM contact import instructions.
