How to Transfer Books, Notes, and Reading Progress to a New Kindle

Move your Kindle library and continue reading by registering the new device to the same Amazon account, syncing it, and delivering any missing books manually.

To move your Kindle library and continue reading on a new Kindle, register it to the same Amazon account as your old device, connect it to Wi-Fi, and run Sync or Sync and Check for Items. Amazon syncs account-linked books and backs up reading position, notes, and highlights. If a book is missing from the new device, send it to that Kindle from Manage Your Content and Devices.

Set up the new Kindle with the right account

  1. Connect the Kindle to Wi-Fi and register it to the Amazon account that owns or can access your books. Amazon’s Kindle setup instructions cover connecting and registering.
  2. On the Kindle, open the quick settings or menu and tap Sync or Sync and Check for Items. The exact label can vary by device or software version.
  3. Give the device time to download available books and update its library. Your Amazon account—not a direct device-to-device copy—is the basis for the ordinary Kindle library transfer.

Amazon says Sync automatically backs up reading position, notes, and highlights to its servers and makes saved data available on linked Kindle devices and apps. Sync is on by default, but the Kindle needs an internet connection to use it. See Amazon’s Sync settings guidance.

Make sure notes and reading progress are available

After syncing, open the book on the new Kindle. For a book supported across your devices, it should resume at the furthest page read that was backed up. Highlights and text-based annotations can also be accessed across Kindle surfaces after syncing, according to Amazon’s e-reader sync guidance.

Handwritten notes on Kindle Scribe

Handwritten annotations have a narrower scope: Amazon says they are currently accessible only across Kindle Scribe devices. Do not expect handwriting made on a Scribe to appear on a standard Kindle e-reader.

If Sync was turned off

Turning Sync off interrupts cross-device sharing of reading position and affects features such as Export or Share for notes. Amazon warns that notes, highlights, or bookmarks created while Sync is off may be lost when it is turned back on. If those annotations matter, check the Sync setting before switching devices and avoid making unsynced changes you need to keep.

Send a book that does not appear on the new Kindle

  1. Open Manage Your Content and Devices and choose Books.
  2. Find the title, open its actions, and choose Deliver or Remove from Device.
  3. Select the new Kindle from the registered-device list and confirm the change.
  4. Connect the Kindle to Wi-Fi and run Sync or Sync and Check for Items.

Amazon’s book-delivery instructions describe sending eligible library titles to a registered device. If a title is not listed in your content, check the order or payment status; a book that is not available to the account cannot be delivered this way.

Understand what does—and does not—transfer automatically

Content or data How it reaches the new Kindle
Books in the Amazon Kindle library Register the device to the relevant account and sync; manually deliver an individual title if needed.
Reading position, notes, and highlights Amazon Sync backs up and shares these across linked Kindle devices and apps when enabled and connected.
Handwritten Scribe annotations Amazon currently describes access across Kindle Scribe devices only.
Personal documents or files copied directly to the old Kindle Do not assume these will appear through library sync. Use a separate supported transfer route, such as Send to Kindle or USB, as applicable.

Amazon documents Send to Kindle and USB file-transfer options separately from delivering books in Manage Your Content and Devices. A file copied directly onto one device is not necessarily part of the account’s synced Kindle library.

There is also no universal export route for every purchased or borrowed Kindle book. Amazon KDP says DRM-protected books are limited to Kindle apps and devices. Its policy effective January 20, 2026 allows verified purchasers to download EPUB or PDF copies of eligible DRM-free books; eligibility is limited, so check the title’s current content page rather than assuming a copy is downloadable. See Amazon KDP’s DRM guidance.

Troubleshoot a missing book or stale reading position

  1. Check the account and connection. Confirm the new Kindle is registered to the account that has the title, Wi-Fi is connected, and Airplane Mode is off.
  2. Sync again. Use Sync or Sync and Check for Items, then wait for the library to refresh.
  3. Check the library view. Select All and clear filters that could hide the title.
  4. Deliver the title manually. Use Manage Your Content and Devices as described above.
  5. Check the order status. If the title is absent from the content page, verify its purchase or payment status.
  6. Restart the Kindle. If the title or latest position still does not appear, restart the device and sync again.

These checks follow Amazon’s missing Kindle content troubleshooting guidance.

Do not confuse a new device with an updated book edition

Registering a replacement Kindle and syncing your account is different from an author-requested update to an eBook. Amazon KDP warns that replacing an edition’s content can erase readers’ notes or highlights. That warning concerns a change to the book itself, not the ordinary transfer to a new Kindle. See Amazon KDP’s updated-content guidance.
