You can move your existing AT&T number and eSIM to a compatible replacement iPhone either during the new iPhone’s setup or afterward in Settings. The nearby-iPhone transfer is usually the simplest option when you still have the old phone; AT&T’s Manage my SIM account flow is the fallback if nearby transfer is unavailable.

AT&T says an eSIM can be moved between two eSIM-compatible devices. The exact screens and wording can differ by iPhone model and iOS version, so follow the prompts displayed on your phones. AT&T’s eSIM troubleshooting FAQ was last updated December 24, 2025.

Transfer the eSIM during iPhone setup
Use this method if you are still going through setup on the replacement iPhone and have the old iPhone with you. AT&T’s iPhone 15 Quick Start instructions require iOS 11 or later on both devices. See AT&T’s iPhone 15 Quick Start guide for its model-specific steps.

- When the old iPhone displays the Set Up New iPhone prompt, follow the on-screen instructions to authenticate the connection.
- When prompted, confirm the phone number and any requested account information, such as the applicable ZIP code.
- Approve the cellular plan transfer and wait for the eSIM to activate. Then continue through the rest of iPhone setup.
AT&T may ask you to verify the number or account. The prompts are not guaranteed to look identical on every model or software version.

Transfer the eSIM after the replacement iPhone is set up
If you have already completed setup, you can start the nearby-phone transfer in Settings. Keep both iPhones close and connected to Wi-Fi while completing this route; AT&T’s iPhone 16 Plus instructions specify nearby devices connected to Wi-Fi. See AT&T’s iPhone 16 Plus instructions.
- On the replacement iPhone, open Settings > Cellular > Set Up Cellular. If that option is not shown, look for Add eSIM below the current plan.
- Choose Transfer From Nearby iPhone.
- Follow the prompts on both phones. If the replacement iPhone displays a verification code, enter it on the old iPhone.
- Continue through the transfer or number confirmation prompts and wait for the new eSIM to activate.
AT&T advises using a secure screen lock and the latest released software on the phones. Its model-specific instructions may use slightly different labels; AT&T’s iPhone 16 Pro guide documents the after-setup transfer sequence.

Use Manage my SIM if nearby transfer is unavailable
If you cannot complete the transfer between nearby iPhones, AT&T documents an account-based option. Connect the replacement iPhone to Wi-Fi, then sign in to Manage my SIM and follow the account prompts.

- Choose Switch devices if you are changing which device uses the line.
- Follow the prompts to transfer the number and eSIM to the replacement device.
- If the eSIM was deleted or needs to be downloaded again, choose Get a new eSIM, then Get started.
This is AT&T’s account flow to move or reissue the eSIM, not a request to buy a second wireless plan. Account eligibility and available options can vary.

If you no longer have the old iPhone
AT&T Prepaid’s guidance says to contact Prepaid customer support if the old iPhone is unavailable or has been reset. That instruction is specific to Prepaid; the public guidance does not establish that the same support route is mandatory for every postpaid customer. Postpaid customers can try Manage my SIM or contact AT&T if self-service does not complete the transfer. AT&T’s eSIM FAQ describes the account-based options.
If the old iPhone has a physical SIM
AT&T says iPhone 14 series and later use eSIM. If your old phone uses a physical SIM, you need to move the line to the replacement iPhone’s eSIM through AT&T’s bring-your-own-device process rather than transferring an eSIM from the old phone. Cellular service will not work on the replacement until the eSIM is activated or the line has been transferred. Follow AT&T’s iPhone setup guidance for its direction on moving a physical-SIM line to eSIM.

Check that the replacement iPhone can use AT&T
Before relying on a transfer, check the exact phone model and line. For a phone bought outside AT&T, the carrier says it must work on AT&T’s network, not be reported lost or stolen, and be unlocked from its previous provider. See the requirements in AT&T’s eSIM FAQ. A transfer can fail if the device or account is not eligible.
