Back up the original, check that the converter supports your world versions, convert a copy, then import the output in the destination edition. Expect some data—especially entities and player inventories—not to carry over.
Before you convert: back up the world and check compatibility
Java and Bedrock store worlds in different formats, so a save from one edition is not directly interchangeable with the other. Chunker documents conversion in both directions. It is a third-party project, not a Mojang or Microsoft product, even though Microsoft Learn hosts its conversion guide. Microsoft Learn’s Chunker overview includes that ownership caveat.
- Make an untouched backup. Keep the original world separate and convert a duplicate. Conversion can omit data, so do not treat the output as a lossless replacement.
- Identify the source edition and world version. Check the current Chunker README for supported formats and version ranges before starting; support can change.
- Prepare an accepted world file. Chunker accepts a root world folder (the one containing
level.dat), a ZIP, or a Bedrock.mcworldarchive. The archive can be produced with Bedrock’s export-world function.
Chunker is available as a standalone application for Windows, macOS, and Linux, and as a command-line interface. The project README specifies Java 17 or later for the CLI.
Convert the world with Chunker
- Open Chunker and select the source Java or Bedrock world folder or archive.
- Choose the destination edition and a target world version supported by the converter. Chunker has advanced conversion settings, but Microsoft Learn says most worlds do not need changes to convert successfully.
- Start the conversion and save the output. Microsoft Learn says conversion time depends on world size and that most worlds are ready to download within a few minutes; that is not a guaranteed maximum.
Import the converted world into the destination edition
Java Edition output
Copy the resulting world folder into Java Edition’s saves directory, then open the game and select the converted world. Preserve the source save separately rather than overwriting it.

Bedrock Edition output
Open the generated .mcworld file. Minecraft should import it as a world; select it from the worlds list after import completes.
What may not transfer correctly
Chunker’s conversion documentation lists level settings; blocks, biomes, and tile entities; multiple dimensions; containers and items; and in-game maps among the data it can convert. It explicitly says cross-edition conversion cannot currently carry entities or player inventories. The project README further describes entities as unsupported apart from paintings and item frames, and structure data such as villages and strongholds as unsupported or limited.

These limits mean the converted world should be checked before you continue playing. Open the copy in the destination edition and inspect important builds, storage, dimensions, maps, entities, inventories, and structures. The documentation does not guarantee that modded features, redstone behavior, every block, or generated structures will reproduce identically.
If you are moving between devices, not editions
For a Bedrock world moving between devices, Minecraft documents a different route: use Realms to upload the world from the source device and download it on the destination. This requires an active Realms trial or paid subscription and current Minecraft versions on both devices. The downloaded local world is labeled with “- Copy.” Follow Minecraft Help’s Bedrock world transfer steps.

Realms is not a Java-to-Bedrock or Bedrock-to-Java converter. Minecraft describes Java Realms and Bedrock Realms Plus as services for their respective editions; see its Java or Bedrock Edition comparison.

Chunker needs a world folder or an accepted archive. The conversion guide does not give a complete, current extraction path for every mobile, console, and desktop platform. If your world is on a console or mobile device, first consult the platform-specific Minecraft Help instructions for exporting or retrieving it; do not assume every platform exposes a folder that can be selected directly in Chunker.
