The feature is not universally automatic, and language and device support vary.

Transcribe a WhatsApp voice message on iPhone
- Open WhatsApp and go to Settings > Chats.
- Turn on Voice Message Transcripts.
- Choose a transcript language, then select Change to that language.
- Touch and hold the voice message and tap Transcribe. Tap the transcript area to expand it.
WhatsApp says transcription is generated on the device, and that others—including WhatsApp—cannot listen to the personal voice messages or see their transcript content. The iPhone help page requires iOS 16 or later and Siri enabled. It lists 12 languages for iOS 16 and 20 for iOS 17 or later, so the available choices depend on the iOS version.

Transcribe a WhatsApp voice message on Android
- Open WhatsApp and go to Settings > Chats.
- Turn on Voice Message Transcripts.
- Choose the language used in most of your received voice messages. Select Set up now or Wait for Wi-Fi.
- Touch and hold the voice message. If needed, open the more-options menu, then tap Transcribe. Tap the transcript area to expand it.
WhatsApp’s current Android help page lists English, Portuguese, Spanish, and Russian. The feature is disabled by default. WhatsApp says transcription happens on-device and message content remains protected by end-to-end encryption; it also warns that transcripts can be inaccurate.

Read a voice message in Google Messages
Open the conversation and tap View transcript above the received voice message. Google’s help page says this option is available when Live Captions are turned off.

If you do not see the option, open the profile menu and go to Messages settings > Voice message transcription. Turn on Show transcripts of voice messages. Google mentions Android 6.0 and later for some steps on its help page, but does not establish Android 6.0 as the minimum version for this transcription feature.
What about audio messages in Apple Messages?
Apple says audio messages in Messages can include transcripts in select languages. Language support varies; consult Apple’s iOS and iPadOS Feature Availability information for the applicable list. Apple’s guide also notes that an audio message is deleted from the conversation on that iPhone two minutes after it is sent or listened to unless you tap Keep.

Use Voice Memos for a saved recording
Voice Memos can transcribe speech while recording or afterward. Apple specifies iPhone 12 or later and support for English (all variants), Spanish, Portuguese, Italian, French, German, Japanese, Korean, Simplified Chinese, and Traditional Chinese; availability also varies by country or region. This is an option for supported audio recordings, not a documented universal way to import voice notes from every messaging app.

Why is there no transcript option?
- The app or platform differs: These instructions apply to the specific apps listed above; a voice note in another app may have different controls.
- Transcripts are not enabled: WhatsApp and Google Messages have settings that must be switched on.
- The language or software is unsupported: WhatsApp’s iPhone language choices vary by iOS version, and Apple Messages and Voice Memos support only specified languages and availability regions.
- A per-message action is still needed: WhatsApp and Google Messages require you to request or open a transcript for the message rather than transcribing every message automatically.
- Live Captions are on: Google documents its transcript option when Live Captions are turned off.
