Whisper runs on your computer; a social-media link, embed, or metadata response is not a substitute for the media file. This guide answers: “Transcribe TikTok and Instagram videos to text with Python (Whisper, no API key).”
What you need before you start
- A local video or audio file that you own or are authorized to process.
- Python and the open-source
openai-whisperpackage. - The
ffmpegcommand-line executable, which Whisper requires to read media. - A computer with enough resources for the model you choose. Local runtime depends on the model and hardware; there is no single timing that applies to every system.
Whisper transcribes an accessible media file; it does not fetch a video from TikTok or Instagram. Use an authorized local file rather than treating an embed or platform API as a general download route. TikTok’s Display API provides authorized user video information and embed details, while oEmbed returns embed markup and metadata. Neither is documented as a general video-download endpoint. TikTok’s media-transfer guide describes sending media to TikTok; its URL-pull flow requires a URL from a property the developer owns and verifies. Its Data Portability API is an authenticated export of a user’s requested data, not unrestricted access to other users’ videos.

Those TikTok details should not be assumed to describe Instagram. For Instagram, use a file you are permitted to access and process, and consult current official Instagram documentation for any platform-specific method of obtaining it.
Install Whisper and ffmpeg
The Whisper project documents Python 3.8–3.11 with recent PyTorch versions as its expected compatibility range; compatibility can vary across environments and future releases. Install the package in your Python environment with:
#1 Best Overall
pip install -U openai-whisper
Install ffmpeg separately as a system command-line tool. A Python wrapper package alone is not a replacement for the executable. The Whisper README lists these examples:
- Ubuntu or Debian:
sudo apt update && sudo apt install ffmpeg - macOS with Homebrew:
brew install ffmpeg - Windows with Chocolatey:
choco install ffmpeg - Windows with Scoop:
scoop install ffmpeg
OpenAI’s Whisper README also notes that a Rust installation may be needed if a tokenizer dependency has to be built because a prebuilt wheel is unavailable.

Transcribe a local video with Python
Save this as a Python script in the same folder as video.mp4, or replace the filename with the path to your authorized file:
Recommended Free Tools
import whisper
model = whisper.load_model("turbo")
result = model.transcribe("video.mp4")
print(result["text"])
The package loads the selected model locally and transcribes the file; the returned result is a dictionary whose text value contains the transcript. Whisper’s documented transcription process reads the entire file and processes audio in sliding 30-second windows. The example uses turbo as a practical starting point for English speech.
Save the transcript to a text file
To write the transcript as plain text, add Python’s standard pathlib file-writing code after transcription:
from pathlib import Path
Path("transcript.txt").write_text(result["text"], encoding="utf-8")
This creates or replaces transcript.txt in the script’s current working directory. It is ordinary Python file I/O, not a special Whisper export feature.
Choose a model and transcription task
Whisper offers six model sizes, including four with English-only variants. Model choice trades processing speed against recognition quality, and performance varies widely by language; these are relative considerations, not a guarantee of a particular result on your computer.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors| Need | Suggested choice | Important detail |
|---|---|---|
| Transcribe English speech | turbo is the README’s recommended default for English transcription. |
It is an optimized version of large-v3; results still need review. |
| Transcribe speech in its original language | Choose an appropriate multilingual model; specify the source language when useful. | Recognition performance varies by language. |
| Translate another language into English | Use a multilingual model such as medium or large. |
The README warns that turbo returns the original language even if translation is requested. |
For example, set the language for a known French source, or request an English translation from a multilingual model:
Best Value
# Transcribe French speech in French
result = model.transcribe("video.mp4", language="French")
# Translate speech into English with a multilingual model
model = whisper.load_model("medium")
result = model.transcribe("video.mp4", task="translate")
Use the translation example when English output is wanted, not simply to get a transcript in the original language.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Check the transcript before using it
Whisper output is a draft, not a verified record. Replay the source while checking proper names, numbers, acronyms, overlapping voices, music, and quiet or unclear speech. Correct errors before quoting the transcript, publishing captions, or using it where exact wording matters.
Describe a transcript as machine-generated. Call it reviewed only after someone has actually checked it against the audio.

Troubleshoot common problems
Whisper cannot read or decode the file
- Check that the file path and filename are correct and that the script can read the file.
- Confirm that the ffmpeg executable is installed and discoverable on your system’s
PATH. Installing a Python package with “ffmpeg” in its name does not necessarily install the required executable. - Try an accessible, supported audio or video file rather than a social-media URL or embed page.
The transcript is in the wrong language
Set the source language explicitly when you know it. If you want an English translation, use a multilingual model such as medium or large with task="translate"; turbo is not the right choice for that translation task.
Processing takes longer than expected
Local processing time depends on both the selected model and your computer. A CPU can run local models, but the available guidance does not support a specific runtime promise. A smaller model may process faster, while model selection can affect recognition quality.
