How to Transcribe Audio in Multiple Languages on Your Mac in 2026 Without Cloud Uploads

Built-in macOS Dictation handles live speech in several configured languages, while a file-capable app with a local model handles recordings. Here is how to set up both and confirm nothing leaves your Mac.

You can transcribe in several languages on a Mac without sending anything to a cloud service, but the method depends on the job. For live speech typed into an app, built-in macOS Dictation accepts several configured languages and lets you switch between them while you speak. For recorded audio or video files, you need a separate app that accepts files and offers a local speech engine. In both cases, “no cloud uploads” is a setting you confirm on your own Mac, not something an app’s name or marketing guarantees.

Two different jobs: live dictation and file transcription

Apple documents Dictation as a way to speak text into any place where you can type, as described in Apple’s Mac Help guide to dictating messages and documents. Transcribing an existing recording is a different workflow. The App Store listing for MacWhisper and the TypeWhisper project documentation both describe transcribing recorded audio and video files, which is the route to use for interviews, lectures, or meeting recordings you already have.

Dictating live speech in several languages

Add the languages you need

  1. Choose Apple menu > System Settings > Keyboard, then turn on Dictation.
  2. In Dictation’s language settings, add each language and region you plan to speak. Apple notes that availability and features vary by language and region, so a language you add may not offer every feature.

Switch languages mid-sentence or mid-session

  1. Click where you want the text to appear in the destination app.
  2. Start Dictation with its shortcut or the Dictation control, then speak.
  3. When more than one language is configured, change the active language from the language indicator near the cursor, or press the Globe key.

Confirm where processing happens

Keyboard settings under Dictation show whether general text Dictation needs an internet connection or processes your voice input and transcripts on the device. Apple’s Siri, Dictation & Privacy page, dated 14 September 2026, says that otherwise dictated content is sent to Apple’s servers. Check the status after you change languages or other Dictation settings rather than assuming it stayed the same. Apple’s guidance covers general text Dictation; it does not cover dictation in a search box, so keep that distinction if you describe the privacy setting to others.

Transcribing recorded audio in multiple languages

For files, choose an app that explicitly supports file transcription and a local speech engine. Two examples are documented in the sources reviewed for this guide. Both are useful starting points, but neither source states which languages each local model handles, so confirm that in the app before you rely on it.

Set up a local-only workflow

  1. Install the app. This step needs a network connection, but it is separate from sending a recording for transcription.
  2. While online, download the local model you intend to use. In MacWhisper, local transcription works offline after this download.
  3. Select a local engine in the app’s transcription settings. In TypeWhisper, choose a local engine rather than a cloud API provider.
  4. Leave cloud transcription, translation, and AI processing turned off. In TypeWhisper, do not enable cloud API or cloud-based post-processing features.
  5. Before a real job, transcribe a short file in each language you need, with the Wi-Fi off if you want to confirm offline operation.

Comparing the options

Option Input Where processing happens Languages Output
macOS Dictation Live speech into the insertion point of an app Shown in Keyboard settings under Dictation. General text Dictation may need the internet, and otherwise dictated content is sent to Apple’s servers, per Apple’s privacy page. Several configured languages, with switching by the language indicator or Globe key. Availability varies by language and region. Text inserted at the cursor
MacWhisper Audio and video files Local models work offline after download. Cloud transcription, translation, and AI services send audio or text off the Mac when selected. Not stated in the App Store listing Transcript; the listing mentions export features, with details not stated
TypeWhisper Audio and video files by drag-and-drop or Finder Local engines run the selected transcription. Cloud API providers and cloud post-processing are separate options. Not stated in the project documentation Transcript; export details not stated in the project documentation

The sources do not include an independent, like-for-like accuracy comparison across languages, so this guide does not rank the engines. Judge them on your own recordings, especially the languages and accents you actually use.

Keeping the wording accurate

When you describe a setup to a client, colleague, or reader, be specific about what stays local. A safe sentence is: “The selected local model processes the recording on this Mac after setup, with cloud transcription and AI features turned off.” Avoid saying that an entire app never sends anything off the device, because the apps above include optional cloud features. For built-in Dictation, point readers to the Keyboard settings check rather than to the general label, since the processing mode can change with language and settings.
