For a real project with few labeled images, compare that approach with fine-tuning a model pretrained on a larger dataset, and choose using the same held-out validation data. The Keras example is an implementation study, not a promise of accuracy on your dataset.
What the Keras small-dataset example trains
The Keras example, Train a Vision Transformer on small datasets, uses CIFAR-100: images with 32×32×3 inputs and 100 classes. It describes training from scratch with SPT and LSA and states that TensorFlow 2.6 or higher is required. Check the example and your installed libraries before adapting its code; the cited material does not establish compatibility across every current Keras, TensorFlow, or alternate-backend combination.

The tutorial normalizes and resizes images and applies random horizontal flips, rotation, and zoom. Treat these as the example’s pipeline, not as universally suitable settings: an augmentation is useful only when the transformed image still represents the same class for your task. The example says it focuses on the proposed SPT/LSA approach rather than reproducing the broader augmentation setup in the cited DeiT work.

Why SPT and LSA are used
A standard ViT divides an image into patches and uses self-attention across them. Unlike a convolutional neural network, which processes local spatial neighborhoods by design, a standard ViT has less built-in locality bias. The Keras example presents SPT and LSA as ways to address that limitation when training with a smaller dataset. The underlying paper is Vision Transformer for Small-Size Datasets.

The paper’s authors reported a 2.96% average improvement on Tiny-ImageNet when SPT and LSA were both applied. That figure is a result for the paper’s benchmark, not a forecast or guaranteed gain for another dataset, model setup, or training run. Separate work on data, augmentation, and regularization describes ViTs’ weaker inductive bias relative to CNNs as a reason they may rely more on regularization or augmentation with smaller training sets; it does not establish that one recipe will work for every task. Choose between training from scratch and fine-tuning
| Approach | Starting point | When to consider it | What to keep in mind |
|---|---|---|---|
| Train from scratch with SPT and LSA | Randomly initialized model, following the Keras small-dataset example | When you want to study this architecture and training approach on your task | The example does not establish expected accuracy, training time, or hardware needs for your dataset. |
| Transfer learning and fine-tuning | Weights pretrained on a larger dataset, adapted to the target task | When labeled data are insufficient to train a full-scale model from scratch; Keras describes transfer learning as a typical choice in this situation. | Results depend on the target data and setup; evaluate it against the scratch approach rather than assuming it will win. |
For background on adapting a pretrained model, see Keras’s Transfer learning & fine-tuning guide. A related Keras ViT image-classification example provides context: it notes that results in the original ViT paper involved pretraining on JFT-300M followed by fine-tuning. That context is not evidence that the small-dataset tutorial reproduces those results.

Adapt the example to your dataset
- Define the task and data split. Establish the image inputs, class labels, and a held-out validation set before comparing approaches. Keep that validation data separate from training.
- Inspect the example’s pipeline. Review normalization, resizing, horizontal flips, rotation, and zoom in the Keras example. Retain only transformations that preserve label meaning for your images.
- Compare initializations. Run the SPT/LSA scratch approach and a suitable pretrained-weight fine-tuning approach on the same training and validation data. Keep evaluation conditions consistent so the comparison is meaningful.
- Check your software environment. The example specifies TensorFlow 2.6 or higher. Confirm that the code’s APIs work with the Keras and TensorFlow versions you have installed; the cited sources do not give a complete compatibility matrix for current versions or other backends.
- Select based on held-out performance and project needs. The sources do not establish a best model or achievable accuracy for an unspecified dataset, nor do they provide a universal training-time or hardware requirement. Your validation results must answer those questions for your own task.
What the example does not establish
- It does not promise that SPT and LSA will improve results on every small dataset.
- It does not reproduce the referenced paper’s broader augmentation setup or claim to reproduce that paper’s results.
- It does not determine the best architecture, expected accuracy, training time, or hardware for your task.
