The API supplies live observations and accepts actions; replay files supply historical game data that you must decode and turn into training examples yourself. Neither replay packs nor a bot that works in a simplified research setup establish that it is ready to compete against human players on the Battle.net ladder.
What the StarCraft II API does—and what replay data does
Blizzard’s StarCraft II API is an external interface for controlling a running game and observing its state. Its protocol is defined with Protocol Buffers; Blizzard’s C++ s2client-api library communicates with the game client over WebSocket. The interface is intended for scripted bots, machine-learning agents, replay analysis, and tool-assisted human play.

Live play and replay analysis are separate interfaces. In a live match, an agent requests observations and sends actions to the client. A replay parser instead decodes recorded game data; it does not connect those records to the live observation/action loop or automatically produce a training dataset.

How do you make a StarCraft II AI bot?
Choose a control interface
For a Python-first project, BurnySc2’s python-sc2 wrapper is a higher-level route; its documentation lists Python 3.9 or newer and a StarCraft II installation as requirements. For lower-level control, Blizzard provides the protocol definitions and the C++ s2client-api. Blizzard’s repository also links PySC2. These projects differ in abstraction and runtime control, so choose based on whether you want a research-oriented wrapper or more direct access to the client API.

A simplified research interface may preprocess observations and offer a reduced action space, while direct API use exposes game state and API actions through the client protocol. Results and code built for one representation do not automatically transfer to the other: the policy must receive compatible inputs and produce valid actions in the target interface.
Implement the smallest complete game loop
The basic cycle is to launch the client, create or join a game, request an observation, process it, send actions, and repeat until the game ends. In step mode, clients synchronize their progress rather than advancing independently. Start by making this cycle work before adding a complex learning algorithm.

- Start the client and create or join a game. Configure the match and map for the environment you intend to test.
- Request an observation. Read the current game state using the interface and representation selected for your project.
- Choose and send an action. A fixed opening or a small rule-based policy is enough to test the full loop.
- Check whether the action took effect. Blizzard’s protocol documentation warns that an action may fail validation immediately or later during execution. Inspect action responses and subsequent observations instead of assuming every command succeeded.
- Repeat until the game ends, then record the result. Log observations, intended actions, failures, outcome, map, race matchup, and game version so later comparisons have context.
Build a baseline before training
A fixed opening or compact rule-based policy gives you a working baseline and helps reveal integration problems before they are confused with learning problems. Keep invalid actions and their responses in your logs; an agent that appears weak may be issuing commands the game does not execute.
Can you train a bot from StarCraft II replays?
Yes, replay data can support imitation learning, behavior analysis, or other offline experiments, but downloading replays is only the start. Blizzard’s project resources link packs of 1v1 ladder games and maps. Access to its Linux packages, maps, and replay packs requires agreement to Blizzard’s AI and Machine Learning License. These replay packs are game data, not a ready-made supervised-learning pipeline.

Decode the replay contents
Blizzard’s s2protocol project decodes replay structures, including headers, game details, initialization data, game events, message events, and tracker events. Its documentation describes the parser as a low-level first step for data mining, not a high-level replay-analysis package. You must decide which events represent useful observations and targets for your model.
Turn events into training examples
A replay-to-training pipeline needs explicit choices about what the model sees and what it should predict. Define an observation representation compatible with the agent you plan to run, select labels or targets, filter unsuitable or incomplete games, normalize data, and align replay events with the action representation used by the live agent. A replay event and an API action are not necessarily interchangeable just because both concern the same game.

Keep the pipeline’s outputs reproducible: record the replay identity, parser version, feature and label definitions, filtering rules, map, and game version with each experiment. This makes it possible to distinguish a model change from a change in how its examples were extracted.

StarCraft II replays depend on deterministic simulation: playback re-simulates the recorded inputs. Blizzard’s protocol documentation says the matching patch, game binary, and data version matter. The replay-info request can report version values, which helps identify the build needed to interpret a replay.
Map dependencies also matter. Blizzard documents automatic retrieval of ladder replay map dependencies on Windows and macOS, but explicitly excludes Linux from that behavior. On Linux, plan to obtain and manage required maps rather than assuming the client will download them automatically. Keep replay files, map dependencies, client build and data identifiers, and parser version together in experiment metadata.
How should you evaluate a trained bot?
Move from controlled matches to broader tests
Begin with controlled offline matches so you can check that the bot runs and that its behavior is being recorded consistently. Then test across repeated games, maps, and race matchups. Report results with the sample size, opponent type or strength, map, game version, matchup, and whether the games were offline, on a bot ladder, or against human opponents. A win rate without those conditions is not a useful basis for comparing agents across different environments.
Interpret SC2LE results within their setup
The StarCraft II Learning Environment (SC2LE) paper by Vinyals and coauthors, published in 2017, describes a research environment with preprocessed observations, a simplified action space, lock-step execution, and full-game play against built-in AI. In the experiments reported in that paper, its baseline agents did not learn to beat the easiest built-in AI on the full game. That is a result about the paper’s agents and setup, not a verdict on every later method or the current game version—and it does not demonstrate competitiveness on a human ladder.
Can you put your bot on the StarCraft II ladder?
Blizzard’s project repository lists SC2AI and AI Arena as unofficial, community-run bot ladders. The available documentation does not establish whether either currently accepts submissions or what its present participation rules are, so check the organizer’s current instructions before planning an entry. Those community bot ladders are also distinct from the human Battle.net ladder.
Blizzard’s documented replay packs provide a supported basis for working with historical ladder games. The reviewed documentation does not establish a currently available official Battle.net player-profile or ladder endpoint for collecting live statistics, so do not assume replay access also provides a live ladder-data API.
