Start by getting a live trade-in estimate for your exact iPhone 16 Pro, then compare it with a realistic private-sale amount after fees and delivery costs. There is no established universal value—and the available evidence does not show that selling privately always pays more. Choose the route that gives you the best balance of net proceeds, convenience, and fit with your upgrade.
Should I trade in my iPhone or sell it myself?
Trade-in is the more guided route: Apple accepts eligible devices online or at an Apple Store, with value applied toward a purchase or issued as an Apple Gift Card. A private sale means finding a buyer, describing the phone accurately, arranging payment and delivery, and handling the marketplace’s processes.

Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
- Net value: For a private sale, subtract marketplace fees, shipping, and other costs from the amount you realistically expect to receive. Do not treat an asking price as proof of what a buyer will pay.
- Form of proceeds: A trade-in may provide purchase credit or an Apple Gift Card; a private sale is a separate transaction with a buyer.
- Time and effort: Consider whether the work of listing, communicating, and shipping is worth any difference in expected proceeds.
- Quote and inspection risk: A trade-in estimate can change if the inspected device does not match its description or other stated conditions are not met.
- Upgrade terms: Check whether a carrier or other promotion requires a particular plan, financing arrangement, or trade-in route.
- Transfer restrictions: Financing and carrier-lock status may affect whether you can transfer or sell the phone as expected.
There is no supported universal winner. Compare actual offers for your device and market rather than relying on a blanket claim about which route pays more.

How much is my iPhone 16 Pro worth?
There is no fixed current value established for every iPhone 16 Pro. The amount depends on details such as storage, condition, market, and the offer available when you request a quote. Apple’s program page describes trade-in options but does not establish a universal value for each configuration. Check Apple Trade In for an estimate using your phone’s exact details.
- Get a live trade-in estimate for the correct model, storage, condition, and country or region.
- Check whether your carrier offers a promotion that applies to your planned upgrade, and read its plan and financing conditions.
- Estimate a private-sale amount from comparable completed sales where available, not simply current asking prices.
- Subtract the actual marketplace fee, shipping, and other costs from your expected private-sale proceeds. eBay says its US fees vary by listing category, format, price, and seller circumstances; final value fees are calculated on the sale total plus a per-order charge. Confirm the fee for your actual listing using eBay’s selling-fees guidance.
- Compare the resulting net amount with the trade-in value and account for how much time and effort each option requires.

Can I trade in a financed iPhone?
Check the installment balance and carrier lock before offering the phone for sale or trade. Apple’s US iPhone shopping help says an iPhone purchased through AT&T, T-Mobile, or Verizon installment plans at Apple remains carrier-locked until it is paid in full. Ask your carrier to confirm payoff and unlock status; do not describe the phone as unlocked or promise that it can be transferred until you have verified that status. Apple’s iPhone Shopping Help covers the installment-plan point, but your carrier can confirm your account’s current status.
Carrier upgrade promotions may also depend on plan and financing terms. Check the offer that applies to your account rather than assuming a trade-in qualifies for every promotion.

What should I do before selling or trading in the phone?
Transfer anything you want to keep before erasing the device. Apple’s support guidance, published June 12, 2026, recommends backing up and transferring information, then removing personal information. Erasing the iPhone turns off Find My and Activation Lock. If you use eSIM, choose the option to erase the device and eSIM when prompted. Apple’s preparation guidance covers selling, giving away, or trading in an iPhone or iPad.
- Back up the iPhone and transfer your data and any services you want to keep to your next device.
- Check that the information you need is available on the new device or in your backup.
- Erase the iPhone and remove your personal information. When prompted on an eSIM phone, select the option to erase the eSIM as well.
- Confirm that Find My and Activation Lock have been removed before handing over or shipping the phone.
- If the phone needs repair, check its eligibility first: Apple says unfinished repairs can prevent trade-in.
Apple’s Trade In terms state: “You are responsible for backing up and/or deleting data on your trade-in device.” Read the US Trade In terms and the terms shown for your transaction.

What to know about Apple’s mail-in trade-in
Apple says its trade-in kit includes a shipping box or mailer and a return label. Send the phone as instructed, but do not include a case, cable, charger, or other extras: Apple says those items will not be returned. If the phone uses eSIM, coordinate suspension of service with your carrier before shipping. Apple’s trade-in preparation instructions explain the kit and shipping steps.

Apple’s US terms say its vendor may revise an estimate if inspection finds that the phone does not match the described condition, Find My has not been removed, or the phone is not received within 14 days after delivery of the trade-in box. The terms say the trade is final unless Apple or its vendor revises the quote and you decline it. Review the terms displayed for your market and transaction, including the deadline, before sending the phone. Apple’s US Trade In terms set out these conditions.
