How to Track Your Progress in Long SNES RPGs

Save in-game, jot down your location and next objective, and keep optional goals on a separate checklist. This simple system makes long SNES RPGs easier to resume without spoilers.

Use the game’s save file to preserve where the run actually stands, and keep a brief session log to remember what you meant to do next. For optional completion, add a separate checklist rather than turning the log into a second walkthrough. This keeps the routine quick, useful, and spoiler-light.

How do I remember what I was doing when I stopped playing?

At the end of a session, save in-game at a safe point, then write a short note with your location, the last story event, your next objective, and any unresolved lead. The save file captures playable state; the note captures context and intentions that the game may not preserve clearly.

  1. Save in a normal in-game slot at a safe stopping point. If the game allows multiple slots, consider keeping a second save before a major choice or a long sequence.
  2. Record the date or session number, location or chapter, and the last event you saw.
  3. Write one next-step reminder, such as “check the eastern path” or “ask the guard about the key.” For a first playthrough, phrase it as a question or reminder based only on what the game has already revealed.
  4. Add a lead you do not want to forget, such as a locked door, an NPC who mentioned a place, or an area to revisit.

On returning, read the note and check the game’s status screen before opening a walkthrough. That sequence refreshes your memory without exposing future story details.

What can the game’s own save and status screens tell me?

Manuals for individual SNES games show why the game itself should be the record of playable state, while also illustrating that save conventions differ. The Chrono Trigger SNES instruction booklet says it supports three separate game saves and describes saving from the map screen as well as at save points. It specifically advises saving at the save point upon reaching the End of Time. See the Chrono Trigger SNES instruction booklet transcription.

The Final Fantasy III SNES manual transcription describes a battery-backed game pak that holds as many as three saved files. Its subscreen includes play time, steps, gold, party information, and a save option. Those fields can jog your memory about the run, but they will not record why you planned to visit a town or which optional task you chose to pursue. The title here is the North American SNES release called Final Fantasy III; the game is known elsewhere as Final Fantasy VI. See the Final Fantasy III SNES instruction booklet transcription.

How can I track side quests without spoiling the story?

Keep optional goals separate from the session log, and group them by the kind of task rather than writing a step-by-step route. This lets you maintain a clean reminder of the main objective without losing track of completion goals.

A Chrono Trigger checklist by BrianRetro, listed as updated December 6, 2022, demonstrates this category-based approach with equipment, stat tabs, secrets, and side quests. It describes itself as concise and spoiler-conscious for first-time players; it is a fan resource, not an official completion standard. See the Chrono Trigger 100% checklist on GameFAQs.

Should I use a walkthrough or make my own checklist?

Choose according to how much detail you want, how much spoiler risk you accept, and how much work you want to do up front.

Method Best for Tradeoff
Save slots plus a one-line note Most players who want to resume smoothly Minimal overhead, but it does not inventory every optional task.
Personal checklist Players aiming for optional completion More thorough, but you must decide what “done” means for your run.
Published guide or game-specific checklist Players who want pre-organized locations and goals May expose spoilers, reflect a particular version, or omit goals you care about.

For a first playthrough, start with your own spoiler-light notes and consult a guide only when you choose to. On a replay or completion run, separate the checklist into story, side quests, collectibles, and missables. Avoid relying on a single completion percentage unless the game or the checklist defines exactly what it counts.

For example, Pixel Guides’ Chrono Trigger checklist, updated September 1, 2026, lists its own reference totals: 7 playable characters, 32 body armors, 24 helmets, and 47 map entries, among other categories. It also lists 71 weapons, 37 accessories, 80 items, 56 Techs and magic entries, 238 bestiary rows, 17 sealed chests, 57 Tabs, and 140 Ayla Charm rows. These are totals in that guide’s dataset, not an official completion percentage or proof that every listed category is required. See the Pixel Guides Chrono Trigger completion checklist.

Is a printed guide useful for tracking a long RPG?

A printed, game-specific guide can help when you want maps or a pre-organized route away from a screen, but check the edition and language before relying on a listing. Square Enix’s catalog describes a Japanese Super Famicom Dragon Quest III official guidebook released January 24, 1997. It is listed as a 240-page B6 book with maps of towns, castles, and dungeons, adventure advice, a three-fold world map, and an adventure flowchart. It is a Japanese-edition example, not a general SNES guide or an English-language resource. See the Square Enix Game Books Online listing.
