How to Track Your Daily Steps Without a Fitness Tracker

Your iPhone or Android phone can count daily steps without a wearable. Set up the right app, carry the phone consistently, and treat its total as an estimate.

You can track daily steps with a smartphone you already own: iPhone records steps in Apple Health, while Android users can use Google Fit or, where available, Google Health phone tracking. Carry the phone consistently so its sensors can register your walking. If you would rather not carry a phone, a basic clip-on pedometer is another option.

Track steps with an iPhone

Apple says the Health app automatically counts steps and walking and running distances, so an Apple Watch is not required. To see your count, open Health, tap Browse, choose Activity, then tap Steps. Health can also accept manually entered data and organize data from other apps and devices. Apple’s instructions for managing Health data explain the available options.

Track steps with an Android phone

Google Fit can use a phone’s sensors to collect activity data, including steps, even when the app is closed. In the documented Android setup, turn on Track activity metrics and allow the Physical activity permission if prompted. Exact settings can vary by phone and Android version; follow Google Fit’s activity-tracking instructions.

Google Health phone tracking

Google’s separate Google Health help documentation describes phone-only step tracking: select Just the app during setup, or connect the phone from the app’s Connections/Devices settings. You need to be logged into the app for step tracking; the phone’s low-power step sensors provide the count. Availability and setup may differ by region or account. See Google Health’s phone-tracking instructions. These are separate products and workflows, so use the instructions for the app you actually have.

Carry the phone consistently

A phone can only register movement while it is with you. The Indian Health Service recommends fitting a smartphone firmly in a pocket. This is practical placement advice, not a guarantee of a perfectly accurate count. If the phone is often left on a desk or carried in different places, your daily totals may not represent the same amount of walking from day to day.

For a fair comparison over time, keep using the same phone and carry it in the same place. The Indian Health Service recommends using the same tracker when monitoring and comparing counts. Switching devices, apps, or placement can change the result even if your activity has not changed. Its step-tracking guidance also recommends placing a pedometer at the waistband or belt, over the mid-line of either leg.

Use a basic pedometer if you do not want to carry a phone

A simple clip-on pedometer is an alternative, not a requirement. Wear it according to the manufacturer’s instructions; the Indian Health Service’s general guidance is to place it at the waistband or belt over the mid-line of either leg. A waistband device can stay with you when your phone cannot, but its count is still an estimate and should be compared consistently.

Understand what a step count can—and cannot—tell you

Step totals are estimates, not ground truth. Device type and the activity being performed can affect what gets counted, so different devices should not be treated as interchangeable. A CDC-published 2022 study compared wrist-worn activity monitors with hip-worn pedometers in 86 adults aged 18–65. Across that study’s protocol, the wrist monitors averaged 11,247 steps (SD 210), compared with 10,099 (SD 39) for the hip pedometers. Those figures describe the study participants, devices, and conditions; they are not a correction factor for smartphone counts. The CDC study cautions that the widely used 10,000-step recommendation may not suit all users of all monitors because devices can produce different daily counts.

Use your count as a way to notice your own movement trends, rather than as a universal pass-or-fail target. For adults, CDC guidance focuses on at least 150 minutes of moderate-intensity aerobic activity or 75 minutes of vigorous-intensity activity per week, or an equivalent combination, plus muscle-strengthening activity on at least 2 days each week. At moderate intensity, you breathe harder and can talk but not sing. A step count alone does not show whether activity meets those targets. CDC’s adult activity guidance explains the recommendations. If you have a chronic health condition or plan a substantial increase in activity, ask a health professional what is appropriate for your age, fitness, skill, and health. CDC guidance on getting started recommends seeking that advice.
