For the latest U.S. Strategic Petroleum Reserve (SPR) inventory, check the U.S. Department of Energy’s SPR Quick Facts page and select Current inventory. For historical levels, follow Historical Inventory to the Energy Information Administration’s (EIA) monthly table, where you can use Download Series History. Always record the date beside the barrel figure: the two routes serve different purposes and do not necessarily show the same snapshot.
Where to check the current SPR inventory
- Open the DOE’s SPR Quick Facts page.
- Select Current inventory to reach DOE’s site-by-site inventory display.
- Note the displayed as-of date and the total in millions of barrels. Include both when quoting or comparing the number.
The DOE table reviewed for this article lists a total of 294.1 million barrels across Bayou Choctaw, Big Hill, Bryan Mound, and West Hackberry, dated August 20, 2026. Treat that as a dated snapshot, not a live count. The same DOE page separately cites 411 million barrels as of December 31, 2025, in its import-protection discussion; that older, differently dated figure should not be combined with or substituted for the August 2026 site table.

How to find historical SPR levels
- From DOE’s Quick Facts page, select Historical Inventory.
- On the EIA table, review the monthly observations or select Download Series History to work with the historical series.
- Keep the observation date with each value. EIA says its stocks are reported as of the last day of each month.
The EIA table displayed a September 30, 2026 release date when reviewed. That is the table’s release date, while each inventory observation follows the stated month-end convention; do not treat the series as daily or weekly data. View EIA’s SPR historical inventory table.

|---|---|---|---|
| DOE SPR Quick Facts: Current inventory | Checking DOE’s displayed current-inventory snapshot | The specific as-of date shown with DOE’s inventory figures | Inventory in barrels, including a site-by-site table |

DOE’s current route is a page check; EIA’s route is designed for historical series review and reuse. The DOE current-inventory destination reviewed rendered as an image, and its accessible text did not establish a machine-readable API or automatic email alert. How to interpret inventory, capacity, and import protection
Inventory is the amount in storage
The SPR inventory figure is the quantity of petroleum held in the reserve at the stated date. DOE’s site table provides that quantity by storage site and as a total.
Authorized capacity is not current inventory
DOE lists 714 million barrels of authorized storage capacity on its page reviewed October 4, 2026. Capacity describes the reserve’s authorized storage limit; it does not mean that amount is currently stored.

Drawdown capability is not a promise of immediate delivery
DOE lists a nominal maximum drawdown capability of 4.4 million barrels per day. Its FAQ says deliveries could begin within 13 days after an emergency sale announcement. These describe operational capability and timing, not the stock on hand or a guarantee that every release would follow the maximum rate.
Days of import protection is a calculated ratio
DOE explains that days of import protection are calculated by dividing SPR inventory by EIA-reported net petroleum imports per day. It is therefore a derived measure, not another barrel count. Since the inventory and import rate can change, the ratio can change as well; cite its date and definition rather than presenting it as a fixed reserve quantity.

Account for announcements without mistaking them for measurements
DOE announced on September 29, 2026, a request for proposals for an exchange of up to 40 million barrels, with deliveries under awarded exchanges scheduled for November and December 2026. That announcement is relevant operational context and a reason to check subsequent inventory updates, but it is not a measured inventory level. Use the dated DOE or EIA inventory observation for the actual stock figure.

DOE’s annual Reports to Congress cover program matters such as physical capacity, petroleum type and quantity, withdrawal and distribution capability, acquisition history and costs, and planned upgrades or maintenance. They provide slower-moving program context; use the current DOE inventory route for a current snapshot and EIA’s series for historical observations.
