Check its coverage and report timestamps, then review closures, incidents, work zones, traffic, road-weather information and cameras where available. Save your route and enable alerts before you leave; recheck only when parked or at a safe stop.
How do I check road conditions?
- Identify the jurisdictions on your route. Open the state or regional 511 website, app or phone service for each area you will travel through. The National Weather Service has a state-by-state directory of road-condition contacts, but it says the directory was updated February 6, 2023. Use it as a starting point and verify links and contact details with the relevant state DOT.
- Search for your route or destination. Try a highway number, destination, route name or map location. Turn on relevant layers, such as closures, crashes, construction, traffic speeds, road-weather conditions, alerts and cameras. The available layers depend on the service and may focus on major highways rather than every local road.
- Read the details, not just the map symbol. Check the report time, direction of travel, affected segment and reporting source. A map can show a situation that has changed since it was reported, and an agency report is different from a third-party or app-user report.
- Save the route and set alerts. If the service supports it, save your trip and enable route notifications before departure. Features vary: AZ511 describes saved routes and alerts, while Louisiana 511 lists email and text alerts.
- Check again when conditions may have changed. Review updates before setting out, and if weather or an incident is developing, check again while parked or at a safe stop. Do not handle a phone while driving; the 511 Arizona app listing warns against phone use on the road.
Where can I find official road-condition information?
In the United States, 511 is a practical first stop, but it is not one universal map with identical coverage everywhere. State and regional services decide what roads and information they include. For example, Caltrans QuickMap provides live traffic information, highway restrictions, lane closures and cameras. Arizona’s 511 service includes state-highway information, incidents, delays, closures, alternate routes and camera access. Louisiana provides road and travel information through its web, app, phone, email and text services.

For routes crossing state lines, check the service for each jurisdiction rather than assuming one map covers the entire trip. A regional service may also have a defined coverage area; SoCal511’s FAQ notes that coverage and information types vary by provider. For road-weather links, the Federal Highway Administration’s Road Weather Management links page lists state resources.
Is the highway open?
Look for an explicit closure or restriction notice from the relevant transportation agency, and confirm it applies to the highway segment and direction you plan to use. Check the report’s timestamp and any status notes. A route displayed on a map is not, by itself, proof that every segment is open; examine the service’s incident and restriction details, and check for an alternate route if one is offered.
#1 Best Overall
- Bright, high-resolution 5” glass capacitive touchscreen display lets you easily view your route
- Get more situational awareness with alerts for school zones, speed changes, sharp curves and more
- View food, fuel and rest areas along your active route, and see upcoming cities and milestones
- View Tripadvisor traveler ratings for top-rated restaurants, hotels and attractions to help you make the most of road trips
- Directory of U.S. national parks simplifies navigation to entrances, visitor centers and landmarks within the parks
Agency services can show current restrictions and work zones. Caltrans, for instance, links to highway restrictions and cameras through QuickMap. Cameras can add useful visual context, but they show a particular location and moment; they do not establish conditions along the whole route.
Official 511 reports versus crowdsourced reports
Some official services combine agency information with reports from navigation apps. DriveNC, for example, says Waze reports appear alongside official NCDOT information. Treat those sources as distinct: an app-user report can add context, while a consequential closure or safety-critical restriction should be checked against the transportation agency’s information where possible.

| Source | What it is useful for | What to check |
|---|---|---|
| Official state or regional 511 service | Agency-provided incidents, closures, work zones, road weather, cameras and traveler information; exact features vary by service. | Coverage, report time, affected segment, direction and status notes. |
| Crowdsourced navigation reports | Additional situational context from app users; DriveNC identifies Waze reports as an added source. | Report time and source. Coverage and completeness are not quantified by the cited services; corroborate consequential closures with the agency where possible. |
How current are road-condition reports?
There is no single update interval established across these services. Use the timestamp and status notes on the specific report, and be especially cautious when severe weather or a developing incident can change conditions quickly. A current-looking map view does not guarantee that every report has refreshed at the same time.

Road-condition services can help with travel decisions, but weather information may be only one layer among several. Consult current official weather alerts when conditions call for it, and use the agency’s closure information for road restrictions.

Using road-condition tools safely
- Set your route, layers and notifications before driving.
- Have a passenger check updates, or pull over safely before using a phone.
- Do not treat a camera image, navigation route or unverified user report as clearance to enter a closed or hazardous road.
- If conditions change, follow posted signs and instructions from emergency personnel and road agencies.
