These are separate jobs: a progress display tells you about test execution, while expected, actual, and diff images show what changed. The concrete workflow below uses Playwright Test; exact progress indicators and artifact publishing depend on your reporter and CI provider.
What progress tracking tells you—and what it does not
A batch run can contain many individual tests, so first identify which tests have completed and which failed using the reporter or CI output configured for your runner. Do not assume every framework or reporter offers the same live states, progress bar, or dashboard. Choose a reporter that exposes the per-test information you need, and make its output or summary visible in CI.

That status does not explain a screenshot mismatch. For that, inspect the expected reference image, the actual capture, and any diff image your runner makes available. In Playwright, screenshot assertions and test information provide the basis for locating screenshot artifacts; the report and CI system determine how conveniently those artifacts are surfaced. Create and maintain a reference
A comparison needs a known reference image. On an initial Playwright run, if no reference exists, Playwright can create one. Later runs compare the captured screenshot with that reference. Therefore, distinguish a newly generated baseline from a regression against an established baseline: a missing expected image on the first run is not the same as a later mismatch.

When an application change intentionally alters the rendered page, generate updated snapshots with --update-snapshots, inspect the changes, and commit the approved reference files. Treat baseline updates as reviewable code changes, not as a way to silence unexplained failures. Playwright: Visual comparisons
Keep rendering conditions consistent
Visual output can differ across operating systems, browser versions, browser settings, hardware, power sources, and headless versus headed execution. Create and compare baselines in the same environment wherever possible, including the same browser and operating-system setup. If CI uses a different environment from the one that created the reference, environmental rendering differences can look like application changes.

Wait for the page to reach a stable state and reduce volatile content such as timestamps, rotating promotions, or live counters when those are not the subject of the test. Playwright’s screenshot assertion waits until two consecutive page screenshots produce the same result before it compares the last capture. A practical workflow for a large screenshot batch
- Choose observable test output. Configure a Playwright reporter, or another runner’s reporter, that provides the per-test status and summary you need. Verify what it actually displays rather than relying on a universal assumption about pending, running, passed, and failed labels.
- Expose the run in CI. Make the reporter’s output or published report easy to reach while the job runs and after it completes. Configure artifact upload according to your CI provider so a failed run retains its report and screenshot files.
- Standardize the capture environment. Use consistent browser, operating system, headless mode, and relevant rendering settings for baseline creation and comparison. Stabilize page content where appropriate.
- Read the test status first. Identify which test failed from the reporter or CI summary. A progress indicator establishes execution state; it does not establish the cause of a visual difference.
- Open the relevant artifacts. Locate that test’s expected and actual screenshots, then inspect the diff if available. Playwright’s test information exposes paths useful for finding test output and attachments. Playwright TestInfo
- Use trace context for unexplained failures. Inspect the test’s trace and related screenshots to understand what happened during execution. --update-snapshots, review the resulting image changes, and commit the references. If the change is not intended or is unexplained, investigate rather than approving the new image.
What to look for when choosing a reporter and CI setup
Because “batch screenshot tests” does not identify one runner or CI system, there is no single correct configuration command or guaranteed progress display. Compare candidate setups using these practical questions:

- Does the report show per-test progress while the batch runs, or only a summary at the end?
- Does it preserve or link the expected, actual, and diff images for a failure?
- Can you open a trace or other execution context from the failed test?
- Are reference images stored and updated in a way that reviewers can inspect alongside code?
- Can the baseline and comparison jobs use consistent browser and operating-system environments?
- Can your CI provider reliably publish the report and retain artifacts when a job fails?
Troubleshoot common batch screenshot problems
The run appears stuck or has no visible progress
Check whether the selected reporter emits live per-test output or only prints a final summary. Then inspect the CI job log and provider-specific report or artifact settings. A lack of a progress bar alone does not establish that the tests have stopped; the exact signal depends on the runner and reporter.
A first run reports a missing screenshot
Determine whether the test is creating its initial reference or comparing against an existing one. In Playwright, the first run can generate a reference screenshot; later runs use that reference for comparison. Confirm that the generated baseline is appropriate before committing it.

The same page fails inconsistently
Check for dynamic content and differences between the baseline and test environments, including browser version, operating system, headless mode, and rendering settings. Allow the page to settle and hide irrelevant volatile elements where appropriate. Playwright’s consecutive-capture stability check reduces some capture timing variation, but cannot make changing application data identical.
The diff is visible but its cause is not
Compare expected and actual images, then open the associated trace or report context. A diff identifies where pixels differ; the trace can help establish what the test did and when. Artifact paths and report presentation depend on the configured runner and CI provider.

A baseline update hides an unexpected regression
Do not accept an update merely because it turns a failing assertion green. Review the proposed reference change against the intended application change, and commit it only when the new rendering is deliberate.
