How to Track Oil Prices and Understand What Moves Them

A practical guide to following Brent and WTI, checking authoritative market data, interpreting spot and futures quotes, and understanding how supply, demand, inventories and disruptions move oil prices.

Track at least two reference points: Brent and West Texas Intermediate (WTI). For each quote, record whether it is a spot price or a futures contract, the contract month, currency and unit. Then explain each move through the physical supply-demand balance, inventory data, disruptions and changing expectations. The U.S. Energy Information Administration (EIA) Markets & Finance hub and the International Energy Agency’s Oil Market Report provide the market context needed to avoid treating one headline or one quote as “the oil price.”

There is no single oil price

“Oil price” is shorthand for several related but different prices. A quote identifies a crude benchmark, a grade and location, a delivery timing, and often a financial contract. Two prices can move in opposite directions for a short period without either being wrong.

  • Benchmark: usually Brent or WTI.
  • Price type: spot or futures.
  • Futures month: for example, the nearest contract or a later delivery month.
  • Unit and currency: commonly U.S. dollars per barrel, but not always.
  • Grade and location: crude quality and delivery point affect the differential.
  • Timestamp and source: delayed, end-of-day and real-time figures are not interchangeable.

Oil grades trade in an integrated global market, so Brent and WTI often move together. Quality, transport costs, local bottlenecks and delivery terms create spreads between them. A chart that omits these labels can make a normal benchmark difference look like a major market signal.

Brent and WTI: which benchmarks should you follow?

Brent

Brent is the principal reference for much internationally traded crude and is particularly useful when your question concerns seaborne trade, European pricing or global exposure. Many physical transactions and financial contracts are priced in relation to Brent even when the oil is produced elsewhere.

WTI

WTI is a key U.S. benchmark associated with inland North American supply and delivery conditions. It is useful for following U.S. production, storage and pipeline constraints, as well as the price faced by participants linked to the WTI market.

Why both can matter

Following both benchmarks helps separate a global shock from a regional one. If Brent rises while WTI lags, the difference may reflect U.S. storage, pipeline capacity or regional production rather than a change in worldwide demand. If both move sharply in the same direction, investigate a development affecting global supply, consumption or risk expectations.

Neither benchmark is automatically “the correct” one. Choose the series that matches the geography, crude stream and decision you are analyzing, then keep that choice consistent.

Spot prices versus futures contracts

Spot prices

A spot price describes the conditions for a prompt physical purchase. It is closest to the price of oil available for delivery now, subject to the grade, location and transaction terms represented by the series.

Futures prices

A futures quote is the price of a standardized contract for delivery in a specified future month. It reflects current trading, expectations about future supply and demand, financing and storage economics, and the value of transferring price risk. It is not a promise that the eventual spot price will equal today’s quote.

Always name the contract month. The front-month contract can expire and be replaced by the next month, creating an apparent jump on a continuous chart that is partly a rollover effect. A later contract can trade above or below the prompt contract because the market is pricing storage, financing, expected scarcity and delivery conditions over time.

Contango and backwardation

When later futures prices are higher than the current or prompt price, the curve is commonly described as contango. The spread can make storage more attractive if the difference is large enough to cover storage, insurance, financing and handling costs. When later prices are lower, the curve is in backwardation; holding physical oil then has a less obvious price incentive, although operational and risk-management reasons for storage can remain.

The curve is information, not a guaranteed forecast. It can change as inventories, interest rates, shipping costs, production expectations and risk premiums change.

Where to check oil prices and market context

Use an official data hub for the series

The EIA’s Markets & Finance hub is a starting point for petroleum data series, weekly reporting and the Short-Term Energy Outlook. Check the release date, update frequency, unit and whether a figure is an observed price, an estimate or a projection.

Use an international market report for the wider picture

The International Energy Agency’s Oil Market Report covers international supply, demand, inventories, prices, refining and trade. The August 2026 edition illustrates the breadth of coverage; readers should use the latest dated edition for current conditions.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Use a price display carefully

A financial quote screen is useful for monitoring, but it may show a delayed price, a continuous futures series or a contract that is close to expiration. Open the instrument details and verify the benchmark, contract month, exchange status, currency, unit and timestamp before drawing a conclusion.

For a historical comparison, use one consistent series. Mixing a spot assessment, a front-month futures contract and a continuous chart can produce a misleading trend even when every individual number is legitimate.

A practical daily oil-price tracking routine

  1. Record the reference prices. Note Brent and WTI, specifying spot or futures and, for futures, the contract month. Save the timestamp, currency and unit.
  2. Check the day’s move. Measure the change in the same unit and percentage basis. Do not compare a settlement price with an intraday quote without labeling the difference.
  3. Read the curve. Compare the prompt contract with one or more later months. Note whether the curve is in contango or backwardation and whether its shape changed.
  4. Check inventories. Look at crude and petroleum-product inventory direction, then compare the result with the same calendar quarter in prior years where possible.
  5. Review supply. Look for changes in OPEC production decisions and actual output, non-OPEC production, outages, exports and available spare capacity.
  6. Review demand. Check indicators of economic activity, transport use, seasonal consumption and refinery demand in the relevant regions.
  7. Scan disruptions. Investigate storms, geopolitical events, refinery outages, pipeline constraints, shipping problems and sanctions that could change current or expected flows.
  8. Separate data from forecasts. Mark each item as an observed release, an estimate or an outlook. Keep projections in a separate column from realized prices.
  9. Write a one-sentence explanation. State which expected or actual supply-demand change best explains the move and identify the evidence that would confirm or challenge it.

This routine prevents a single dramatic headline from replacing a balanced check of prices, physical data and expectations.

What moves crude oil prices?

The EIA’s July 28, 2026 overview groups the main influences into seven connected areas: spot-market dynamics; supply from non-OPEC producers; supply from OPEC producers; the supply-demand balance as reflected in inventories; financial markets; and demand in OECD and non-OECD economies. These categories overlap, but they provide a useful checklist.

Physical supply and demand

Prices tend to rise when demand grows faster than available supply and face downward pressure when production and other available supplies exceed consumption. The relevant balance is not just what was produced today. It includes refinery operations, exports, imports, transportation capacity, inventories and the amount of supply participants expect to be available later.

OPEC decisions and compliance

OPEC production targets can influence expectations and prices, particularly when the announced change is large relative to spare capacity. A target is not the same as actual output: compliance, technical limits, domestic needs and market conditions determine how much oil reaches buyers. Compare announced policy with measured production and export evidence.

Non-OPEC production

Output from producers outside OPEC changes the amount of crude competing in the market. New projects, decline rates, maintenance, investment decisions, weather and operating problems can alter supply. Because many projects take months or years to develop, the near-term response is usually slower than a price headline suggests.

Economic activity and petroleum demand

Growth can increase fuel and petrochemical use, while a slowdown can reduce it. Demand also varies by season and region. A strong consumption signal in one economy does not automatically establish a global shortage; examine its size, timing and relationship with refinery runs and trade.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Financial markets and expectations

Futures trading, interest rates, currency movements, risk management and changing expectations can move quoted prices before physical barrels change hands. Financial activity does not make the physical balance irrelevant; it changes how quickly participants reprice the expected balance.

Geopolitical, weather and infrastructure risks

Events can affect prices through actual lost supply or through the risk that future flows will be interrupted. Hurricanes can shut production, ports and refineries. Pipeline constraints can strand crude in one region while another faces higher delivered costs. Conflict, sanctions or shipping disruption can add a risk premium even before measured exports fall.

Why small supply changes can cause large price moves

Near-term oil supply and demand are relatively inelastic. Producers cannot instantly add major capacity, and households, airlines, factories and vehicles cannot quickly replace equipment that uses petroleum. When a disruption removes supply, buyers initially compete for the available barrels rather than switching fuels immediately.

Inventories and spare production capacity provide a buffer. If that buffer is ample and can reach the affected market, the price response may be limited. If stocks are low, transportation is constrained or spare capacity is unavailable, the same physical loss can produce a much larger move. Prices can therefore react to the expected duration and credibility of a disruption, not only to barrels already missing.

How to read inventory reports without overreacting

What a build can mean

A crude or product inventory build can indicate that current supply exceeded consumption at prevailing prices. It can also reflect imports arriving ahead of demand, refinery maintenance, changing export timing or a temporary logistics issue. A build is evidence about one market and period, not automatic proof of a worldwide surplus.

What a draw can mean

A draw can show stronger consumption, reduced production, lower imports or the use of stored oil to offset a disruption. It may be constructive for prices when it is larger than normal for the season, but the cause matters more than the direction alone.

Use seasonal comparisons

The EIA notes that comparing inventory levels or changes with the same calendar quarter in previous years helps account for seasonal variation. Heating demand, driving patterns, refinery maintenance and agricultural activity can all make a week look unusual when compared only with the immediately preceding week.

Recognize coverage limits

Inventory reporting is not equally complete or timely for every country. A detailed weekly national release can be informative without representing the entire global market. Pair it with international supply, demand, trade and inventory assessments from broader reports.

How futures spreads connect prices and storage

Compare the price of a prompt contract with later delivery months rather than looking only at the outright price. A higher later price can compensate owners for holding oil, but only after storage, insurance, financing, evaporation, quality and transport costs are considered. If the spread is smaller than those costs, storage is less attractive on a purely financial basis.

A steep backwardated curve can signal that prompt barrels are valued more highly than later delivery, often because immediate availability is tight or inventories are relatively valuable. It is not a standalone diagnosis: contract specifications, seasonal demand, local logistics and risk premiums also shape the curve.

A framework for explaining any sharp move

  1. Define the move. Identify the benchmark, spot or futures status, contract month, price change, unit, currency and time window.
  2. Check whether the move is local or broad. Compare Brent with WTI and, if available, related crude grades. A divergence points toward grade, location or transport factors.
  3. Test the physical balance. Look for new information on production, refinery demand, consumption, imports, exports and inventories.
  4. Test the disruption channel. Check weather, geopolitical developments, outages, pipelines, ports and shipping routes.
  5. Test the expectation channel. Ask whether futures prices moved because traders revised the expected duration or probability of a future event.
  6. Check the curve and related products. Product prices, refinery margins and calendar spreads can reveal whether the issue is crude supply, refining capacity or immediate delivery.
  7. State uncertainty. Identify what is measured, what is estimated and what remains a forecast. Avoid presenting a plausible explanation as a confirmed cause until data support it.

Worked examples of the reasoning

Both Brent and WTI rise after a production disruption

First verify that both quotes refer to comparable contract times. Then check the reported outage, its expected duration, inventories near affected markets and available spare capacity. A large move is more understandable if stocks are low or replacement barrels cannot arrive quickly. If later futures prices rise by less than prompt prices, the market may be pricing acute near-term tightness rather than a permanent loss.

Brent rises while WTI barely changes

Investigate seaborne supply, international shipping, European refining demand and non-U.S. geopolitical risk. Then check U.S. production, inland inventories and pipeline capacity. The spread can widen because the two benchmarks face different locations and logistics even when global demand is unchanged.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Prices fall despite a headline production cut

Compare the announced target with actual compliance and the size of the cut relative to existing inventories. Demand expectations may have weakened, another producer may have increased output, or traders may already have priced in the announcement. A target alone does not establish that the physical market became tighter.

Inventories build while the futures curve remains firm

Check whether the build is seasonal, concentrated in one location or caused by timing. A firm later curve can reflect expectations of stronger future demand, a forthcoming disruption, storage economics or uncertainty about the quality of the inventory data. The apparent contradiction usually disappears when the time horizon and geography are separated.

How to compare two oil-price sources

Comparison What to verify Why it matters
Benchmark Brent, WTI or another named grade Different locations and qualities produce differentials.
Price type Spot assessment or futures contract Prompt physical conditions and expected future delivery are not the same.
Contract timing Front month, specific month or continuous series Rollovers can create chart discontinuities.
Geography Delivery point, inventory region and market covered A local bottleneck may not describe the global balance.
Frequency Intraday, daily, weekly or monthly Different frequencies capture different kinds of movement.
Historical coverage Start date and whether methodology changed Long comparisons require a consistent series.
Data status Observed, estimated or forecast Forecasts should not be judged as realized prices until the period ends.
Timestamp Publication time, time zone and delay Two apparently different prices may simply reflect different cutoffs.

Common tracking mistakes and fixes

  • Calling every quote “the oil price.” Fix: name the benchmark, price type and contract month.
  • Comparing a spot series with a futures series. Fix: use like-for-like data or explain the distinction explicitly.
  • Ignoring contract rollover. Fix: inspect the underlying month on a continuous chart.
  • Treating one weekly inventory number as global proof. Fix: add seasonal, geographic and international context.
  • Assuming an announced production target equals output. Fix: check compliance and measured production.
  • Explaining a move from one headline. Fix: test physical balance, disruption and expectation channels.
  • Confusing a forecast with a promise. Fix: label every projection and record the release date.
  • Comparing figures with different currencies or units. Fix: normalize the units and retain the original labels.
  • Using stale data as current. Fix: check the publication date and release frequency on every report.

Forecasts: useful signals, not guarantees

Futures prices and official outlooks summarize information and expectations available when they were produced. They are not guaranteed outcomes. The EIA emphasizes that oil-price projections are uncertain because production, demand, inventories, policy and disruptions can change after publication.

When reading an outlook, record its forecast date, horizon, assumptions and scenario. Compare the forecast with the contemporaneous futures curve, but do not treat either as an objective future price. After the period ends, evaluate the forecast against the correctly matched spot or contract series, noting any revision in the underlying data.
