Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Track nuclear waste as identifiable disposal packages, not as isolated numbers. Each package record should connect its identity and origin to the approved mass and volume values, the method and units behind those values, the geometry required by the receiving facility, and the waste-characterization, certification, and shipment records. There is no universal geometry schema: requirements depend on waste type, package, jurisdiction, transport route, and the receiving facility’s current waste acceptance criteria (WAC).
Build a package record that can be traced
Give each disposal package a unique identifier and retain its generating facility or work origin. Link that ID to the package’s characterization data, packaging and monitoring records, certification, and shipment paperwork. The U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) assessment guidance calls for traceability between packages, generator work, characterization, and packaging-monitoring data, with records that can be audited and retrieved. See the DOE radioactive waste management assessment guide.

Define the record fields and units, the measurement method and date, the responsible approved procedure, and what each measurement describes: waste contents, package interior, or package exterior. These are useful inventory-design practices, not a claim that one regulator mandates this exact schema. Preserve enough measurement provenance to support the receiving facility’s acceptance decision and a later audit.

DOE’s Waste Characterization Program Manual, Revision 5, dated July 2023, describes determining waste mass by subtracting the disposal container’s tare weight from the gross package weight. It also permits summing weights from individually weighed packages or cuts. The manual uses waste weight in radionuclide activity or chemical concentration calculations per unit weight. Follow the approved procedure for the waste program and facility.

- Record gross package weight, container tare, and the resulting net waste mass when using the subtraction method; alternatively, retain each individual weight and the sum when using the summation method.
- Record units, measurement date, scale identity or other method, and applicable measurement-control information in the operational record. These are recommended provenance fields; the site’s approved procedure determines the required controls.
- Ensure the scale and its measurement controls meet the applicable program procedure. DOE’s manual references a measurement and test equipment procedure for scales used to determine waste weight.
The manual describes a tolerance exception only when measurement differences have an insignificant impact on radionuclide quantification. That narrow condition should not be generalized beyond the procedure.
Measure and record volume without confusing it with capacity
Volume needs a stated basis. Under the method in DOE’s July 2023 Revision 5 manual, container volume may stand for waste volume only when the container is thin-walled—under 0.75 inch—and actual waste volume is within 10% of the empty container volume. The manual also defines compacted waste volume as the container volume under that procedure. These are conditional rules in a DOE manual, not universal allowances.

The manual’s example container volumes are:
| Container example | Volume in DOE Manual 1S |
|---|---|
| B-25 | 90.0 ft³ |
| B-12 | 45.0 ft³ |
| 55-gallon drum | 7.4 ft³ |
| Skid pan | 162.0 ft³ |
| 20-foot intermodal container | 1,173.0 ft³ |
| 40-foot intermodal container | 2,394.0 ft³ |
These figures are examples from that manual; they are not guaranteed usable volumes, generic package specifications, or a substitute for the approved method. Retain whether a recorded volume describes the waste itself or a package-based value, and identify the method used.
Describe geometry for the receiving facility and route
Record external dimensions and configuration when needed for package identification, loading, transport, storage, or disposal acceptance. Do not assume that a common list of length, width, and height is sufficient for every package or facility. The reviewed guidance does not establish one cross-cutting geometry schema.

Check the receiving facility’s current WAC, the approved package design, applicable transport requirements, and site packaging procedure for required geometry fields, dimensional limits, and package restrictions. NRC guidance notes that low-level radioactive waste packages must use approved shipping containers, identify radionuclides and amounts, and meet the facility license and applicable State, NRC, and Department of Transportation requirements. See the NRC low-level waste licensing and technical requirements.
Keep characterization data with the package record
Mass, volume, and geometry are only part of disposal characterization. DOE’s criteria call for physical and chemical characteristics; waste volume, including stabilization or absorbent media; weight of the container and contents; radionuclide data; characterization date; and generating source. Retain any performance-assessment information required for the waste and facility as well. The applicable acceptance criteria determine what data and level of detail are required.

- Multiple high sensitivity sensors installed for detecting Power line, Smart meter, Cell phone, Microwave etc.
- Identify/recognize the common possible sources, such as Power line, Cell Tower, Microwave, Static etc.
- Safety suggestion lets you understand current situation instantly.
- Detects 5G network signal and RF up to 10Ghz
- Built-in RF Spectrum analyzer and GQ RF Browser for real time RF monitoring.
DOE’s assessment criteria also call for appropriate measurement, analysis, calibration, maintenance, and measurement-quality controls. Data-quality objectives should identify parameters and acceptable uncertainty. For each value, use a method authorized by the program and receiving WAC, and consider whether its uncertainty and measurement basis support the concentration or disposal calculation for which it is used. See the DOE radioactive waste management assessment guide.

For qualifying U.S. low-level radioactive waste shipments intended for licensed land disposal, 10 CFR Part 20, Appendix G requires a manifest using the applicable information on Forms 540 and 541 and, when needed, Form 542. NRC describes Form 540 as the shipping paper, Form 541 as the container and waste description, and Form 542 as an index and compact tabulation when needed. The manifest links package and waste descriptions to shipment documentation; it does not replace the facility’s WAC or characterization requirements.

- Detects: Magnetic fields, electric fields, and RF (20 MHz–6 GHz; includes most 5G but not experimental millimeter waves). Does not detect radioactivity.
- Displays EMF fluctuations fully: bars update instantly for fast digital signals, while RF and number averages refresh 4 times per second. Other meters over-average or filter field peaks, giving slower, less complete readings.
- Features: 3-axis magnetic, single-axis electric (with standard or weighted frequency responses), and single-axis RF readings (unweighted). Weighted readings emphasize effects on the human body.
- Measures: 4G and 5G cell phones, cell towers, WiFi routers, Bluetooth, AC Powerlines, and Smart Meters. The TF2 responds to RF very fast compared to other meters.
- Includes: Trifield TF2 meter, 9V battery, Quick-start Card, Detailed Instruction Manual, and soft-shell, zipper carry case.
NRC permits equivalent substitute forms and electronic completion, transmission, and storage under specified conditions; relevant electronic forms require shipper-consignee agreement. Confirm applicability and fields for the specific shipment with the receiving facility and associated Agreement State. NRC’s Uniform Low-Level Radioactive Waste Manifest page and NUREG/BR-0204, Revision 3 provide forms and completion guidance.
Use specialized inventory models only within their scope
A 2014 WIPP compliance application describes a qualified inventory database enhancement that tracked waste and packaging materials and chemical components in kilograms and radionuclide activities in curies, rather than relying only on density, weight-percent, or activity-concentration fields. This is a historical example of inventory design for a specialized disposal program, not a current universal software requirement. See the WIPP 2014 compliance recertification application.
Quick Recap
Practical checks before accepting or shipping a package
- Can the package ID be traced to its generator, characterization, monitoring, and shipment records?
- Does every mass and volume value state its units, method, date, and what it measures?
- Are gross weight, tare, and net waste mass distinguishable when tare subtraction is used?
- Does the volume method comply with the approved procedure and the facility’s requirements?
- Do the recorded geometry and packaging details match the approved package design and current WAC?
- Are measurement controls, uncertainty, and supporting characterization sufficient for the acceptance decision and intended calculations?
- Do manifest details agree with the package record, and have facility and Agreement State instructions been checked?
