How to Track German Industrial Production and Construction Indicators

A practical guide to finding Destatis production and construction indices, choosing adjusted or unadjusted figures, and using Bundesbank and Eurostat data responsibly.

For Germany’s monthly production and construction data, start with Destatis: choose an industry-specific production series to follow industrial output, and the construction production index to follow construction activity. Use seasonally and calendar-adjusted figures to assess month-to-month momentum when available; use unadjusted figures when reported levels or year-on-year comparisons are the focus. Destatis points users to its Economic Dashboard and GENESIS-Online for durable access as its Short-term indicators page is scheduled to stop being updated from October 2026 and be deactivated at the beginning of 2027.

How do I track German industrial production?

Use the monthly production index published by Germany’s Federal Statistical Office, Destatis. The index measures price-adjusted output. First choose the right scope: the broad production-sector measure covers mining and quarrying, manufacturing, energy and construction. It is not a manufacturing-only measure. If you mean industrial production, select the relevant industry series rather than treating the all-sector total as industry.

Destatis is the national source for these indicators. Its open-data short-term-indicator index lists production-industry indicators alongside construction production and related series. The index is useful for identifying what is available, but Destatis has announced that the Short-term indicators page will stop being updated from October 2026 and be deactivated at the beginning of 2027. Use the Destatis short-term indicators topic page to orient yourself, then retrieve data through the Economic Dashboard or GENESIS-Online. Page status and navigation can change during the transition.

Choose a series before reading its movement

  • Industrial output: use the industry-specific production series for the sector you want to describe.
  • Broad production sector: use this only when the intended measure includes mining and quarrying, manufacturing, energy and construction.
  • Productivity and labour costs: consult the related indices for context, not as substitutes for output.

Where can I find Germany’s construction output data?

Use the construction production index for realized construction activity. Destatis lists construction production and related indicators in its short-term-indicator index; the Bundesbank’s production-sector series listing provides another route to construction-only and more detailed series. Its listing, dated 7 September 2026, includes output in the production sector including construction, construction alone, buildings and civil engineering, and specialised construction activities. Listed series can be downloaded as CSV or SDMX-ML 2.1.

Choose the construction detail that fits the question

  • Total construction: use the construction production index for an overall reading of the sector.
  • Building construction: use this series when the question concerns building work.
  • Civil engineering: select it for infrastructure and related engineering activity.
  • Specialised construction activities: use the separate series where that segment matters.

Destatis’s production index in building construction table illustrates how a detailed table can present its index base and adjusted variants. Its snapshot dated 8 June 2026 reported a base of 2021=100 and displayed X13 JDemetra+ and BV 4.1 adjusted series; that dated snapshot does not establish the latest observation.

Which figures should I use: seasonally adjusted or unadjusted?

For month-to-month movement, prefer seasonally and calendar-adjusted observations when available. Seasonal patterns and calendar differences can obscure short-term movement in raw monthly figures. Some series may provide only calendar adjustment or multiple adjusted variants, so identify exactly which one you selected.

Use unadjusted observations when you need the originally reported levels or want to focus on a year-on-year comparison. Do not compare an unadjusted value directly with an adjusted value as though both were the same series. When reporting any reading, name the adjustment—unadjusted, calendar-adjusted, or seasonally and calendar-adjusted—alongside the figure.

How should I interpret the construction index?

The construction production index is an estimate of price-adjusted activity, not a count of projects or buildings. Eurostat describes its construction production index as a monthly measure of changes in price-adjusted construction output. Monthly construction volume value added is not directly observable; Eurostat says it must be approximated using measures such as deflated gross production or inputs of labour and raw materials. The Eurostat overview published 18 September 2026 states a base year of 2021=100 for the construction production index: that is the index reference, not a growth rate or output level.

For comparison with other EU countries, Eurostat’s construction production index overview explains the common statistical framework and dataset family, including adjusted forms and growth rates. Match the series scope, adjustment and base year before comparing countries; a shared label alone does not guarantee like-for-like observations.

What else helps explain production and construction activity?

Use related indicators to answer different questions, not to create a blended output measure.

Indicator What it helps show How to use it
Orders received Demand entering the pipeline Leading context; not realized output.
Orders on hand Work already ordered and awaiting completion Pipeline context; not current production.
Building permits Potential future building activity Leading context; not completed construction output.
Employment and actual hours worked Labour used in building construction and civil engineering Useful alongside output to understand labour input.
Remuneration and turnover Additional activity and labour-cost context in building construction and civil engineering Read as separate measures, not as output-index equivalents.

Destatis’s short-term indicator listing includes construction production, orders received, orders on hand, building permits, employment and turnover. The Bundesbank’s economic activity and prices series pages provide further statistical context.

How do I keep monthly comparisons reliable?

  1. Record the scope: note whether the series covers all production sectors, industry excluding construction, or construction.
  2. Record the construction segment, if relevant: total construction, building construction, civil engineering or specialised activities.
  3. Record the adjustment: distinguish unadjusted, calendar-adjusted, and seasonally and calendar-adjusted observations.
  4. Record the purpose: decide whether the comparison concerns monthly momentum, annual change, a leading signal or cross-country comparison.
  5. Check the vintage: mark provisional or estimated observations and retain the reference month, release date and access date if the result matters to your analysis.

The Bundesbank’s Output background page warns that “The latest data are usually provisional and contain estimates.” Historical values can also be revised, so an older downloaded value may not match the current series. Check the current Destatis or Bundesbank release calendar for a specific publication date; release dates can change and are not established here.
