Use UTM parameters only on destination links you control: they let you measure a tagged campaign, but they do not make Gemini add tags to links in its answers or reveal every visit influenced by Gemini.
Find Gemini referrals in GA4
- Open your GA4 property and go to Reports > Acquisition > Traffic acquisition. The exact report labels can vary as Google updates the interface.
- Use a session-scoped source dimension, such as Session source, for acquisition analysis. Search or filter the source values for
gemini.google.com; a practitioner report describes the observed source/medium asgemini.google.com / referral. - For older date ranges, also check for
bard.google.com / referral, which has been reported in historical data. Treat both hostnames as observed patterns, not a Google guarantee that every Gemini visit will use these labels.
Google recommends cross-channel dimensions such as Session source for acquisition analysis. The source, medium, campaign, landing-page, and key-event dimensions available in your property can help you compare outcomes, provided you compare like scopes and separate manually tagged campaigns from referrer-observed visits. Google documents user-, session-, and event-scoped traffic-source dimensions, but does not prescribe a Gemini-specific scorecard: About traffic-source dimensions.

Use UTMs on links you control
UTMs identify a campaign when the tagged destination URL is collected by Analytics. They are useful for links your organization creates and distributes, including a link in a Gemini-related placement that you control. They do not retroactively tag links in Gemini answers, and you should not assume Gemini will preserve or append your parameters to answer citations.

https://example.com/page&utm_medium=referral&utm_campaign=content_distribution
Replace the example domain and values with your actual destination and campaign details. Use utm_source=gemini only when the tagged link is genuinely part of a Gemini-related placement you control; ordinary clicks from Gemini answers are generally identified, when referrer information is available, through referral attribution rather than your manually added tags.
What each parameter does
| Parameter | Purpose | Example use |
|---|---|---|
utm_source |
Identifies the source or referrer. | gemini for a controlled Gemini-related placement. |
utm_medium |
Identifies the marketing medium. | referral when that accurately describes the placement. |
utm_campaign |
Names the product, promotion, or campaign. | content_distribution. |
utm_content |
Distinguishes creatives or links within a campaign. | Use distinct values for different calls to action. |
utm_term |
Identifies paid keywords. | Use for paid keyword tracking where applicable. |
utm_id |
Identifies a campaign. | Use a consistent campaign identifier. |
Google recommends including utm_source, utm_medium, and utm_campaign when adding campaign parameters. Optional parameters do not all appear in GA4 reporting: Google says utm_creative_format and utm_marketing_tactic are not currently reported in Analytics properties. See URL builders: Collect campaign data with custom URLs.

After tagging a link, look for its values in GA4’s Traffic acquisition report and the corresponding manual traffic-source dimensions. Keep spelling and naming conventions consistent across links. Google warns that missing UTM parameters can lead to (not set) values. When UTMs are used alongside an advertising integration, consult Google’s guidance on manual tagging and auto-tagging because auto-tagged values can take precedence in relevant dimensions: Traffic acquisition report.

Compare tagged and observed traffic using the same acquisition scope—for example, session source, session medium, and campaign—then examine landing pages or key events available in your property. Do not mix session-scoped rows with user- or event-scoped measures and interpret the difference as Gemini performance.

GA4 can use a document referrer to populate traffic-source dimensions. If referral information does not reach Analytics, a visit may instead be processed as direct. A Gemini-specific practitioner report also cautions that referrals from some Gemini surfaces may not carry a visible referrer. Consequently, GA4 reports observable attribution, not a census of every visit or conversion influenced by Gemini.
