How to Track Ethereum Futures Open Interest Across Exchanges

A practical guide to tracking ETH futures open interest across exchanges, including CoinGlass and Binance data routes, contract-scope checks, unit normalization, historical limits and interpretation caveats.
Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The reliable way to track Ethereum (ETH) futures open interest across exchanges is to combine a cross-exchange feed for breadth with exchange-native APIs for verification. Before comparing numbers, fix the contract scope, unit, valuation method, timestamp and venue coverage; otherwise two correct feeds can appear to disagree. Open interest measures outstanding exposure in contracts that remain open. It does not, by itself, reveal whether traders are net long or net short.

This guide shows how to choose a data route, verify that ETH markets are included, collect current and historical readings, normalize them for comparison, and interpret changes without turning open interest into a directional signal.

What ETH futures open interest tells you

Open interest (OI) is the amount of futures exposure still open under a defined market scope. A rising reading means more exposure is outstanding than before; a falling reading means exposure has been reduced or contracts have expired or settled, depending on the instruments included.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

OI is not the same as trading volume. Volume counts contracts traded during a period, while OI is a point-in-time or sampled measure of positions that remain open. A market can have high volume and little net change in OI when positions are opened and closed rapidly.

Nor is OI a net-position gauge. Every futures contract has a long and a short, so an aggregate OI figure does not identify which side is dominant. Use price, funding, basis, liquidations or positioning data as separate context rather than inferring direction from OI alone.

Choose an exchange-native or cross-exchange route

You have two practical ways to collect ETH futures OI. An exchange-native endpoint gives you that venue’s own reading. A cross-exchange provider combines several venues into one response or chart, which is faster for breadth but requires you to verify the provider’s coverage and calculation rules.

Route What it provides Strengths Checks required
Exchange-native API A symbol- or market-level reading from one venue Direct venue data; transparent product scope; useful for reconciling a surprising aggregate Repeat the process for every venue; confirm contract type, symbol, units, history and rate limits
Cross-exchange feed Several exchanges in one list, chart or aggregate Broad coverage; synchronized series; simpler dashboards and alerts Confirm supported exchanges and ETH products; identify what the aggregate includes; check cache interval, units and plan limits

A sensible workflow is to start with a consolidated exchange-level view, then query a venue’s own endpoint whenever a move is material or the totals do not reconcile. Keep the same scope and timestamp in both checks.

Define the ETH market you intend to measure

“ETH futures” is not one universal instrument. Write the scope beside every chart or database column so a later reader can tell exactly what the number represents.

Separate perpetual and dated futures

Perpetual contracts have no scheduled expiry; dated futures settle on a specified date. A provider may include one, the other or both. If your question is about perpetual OI, exclude dated contracts at every venue. If you want all futures, record that the total combines product types and check whether each exchange labels them separately.

Record the exact venue product or symbol

Exchange symbols can distinguish quote assets, margin assets and contract families. Binance’s cited market-data documentation is specifically for USDⓈ-M Futures, so a reading obtained there should not be presented as all Binance ETH derivatives or as a census of every ETH contract type. Use the exact symbol required by the endpoint and keep that symbol in your stored record.

Decide whether your total is venue-level or market-wide

An exchange total answers “how much OI does this venue report under this scope?” A cross-exchange aggregate answers “how much does this provider report across its included venues and products?” The latter can omit unsupported markets, so label it as the provider’s aggregate rather than total ETH futures OI everywhere.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Normalize units before comparing exchanges

Raw values are comparable only after you make their units and contract definitions consistent. Keep the original field as well as your normalized value so conversions can be audited.

Contract count is not automatically comparable

One contract on one venue can represent a different amount of ETH from one contract on another venue. Comparing contract counts without each contract’s multiplier can produce a false ranking. Prefer a coin quantity or USD value supplied by the same provider, or convert using the documented contract multiplier for each instrument.

Coin and USD readings answer different questions

A coin-denominated series describes ETH exposure. A USD-denominated series values that exposure, so it changes when ETH’s price changes even if the number of ETH-equivalent contracts is unchanged. CoinGlass documents unit choices of USD or coin for its exchange-history chart; store the selected unit with every observation.

Document the USD valuation method

When a feed reports USD, note whether it uses an index price, mark price, last price or another valuation supplied by the provider. Two USD totals can differ simply because they use different prices at the same timestamp. Do not mix a venue’s contract-count field with a provider’s USD aggregate and call the result a like-for-like comparison.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Align timestamps and intervals

A current snapshot, a regularly sampled point and an OHLC candle are different observations. Align timestamps to a common timezone, retain the original timestamp, and compare equivalent intervals. If one source is cached and another is live, a short-lived difference may reflect timing rather than missing positions.

Track several exchanges with CoinGlass documentation

CoinGlass documents an exchange-list endpoint that returns OI for a coin across multiple exchanges. Its response includes an “All” row described as an aggregate. The same documentation reports a 10-second cache or update frequency, which is an endpoint-specific behavior rather than a guarantee for every CoinGlass feed. Review the current reference at CoinGlass Exchange List.

  1. Choose the coin symbol ETH and confirm that the endpoint supports the exchanges and ETH contract types you need.
  2. Record the response timestamp, selected unit and each exchange’s value. Preserve the “All” value separately; do not assume it includes markets that are not listed individually.
  3. Save the provider name, endpoint name and retrieval time with the data. This makes a later discrepancy reproducible.
  4. When an exchange’s value changes sharply, query that venue directly or compare it with the historical chart before drawing a conclusion.

For a time series, the documented CoinGlass Exchange History Chart returns synchronized timestamps and a separate series for each exchange. Its documented unit choices are USD or coin. Use the same unit and interval for every series, and check that ETH and the desired venues are covered before interpreting the chart.

What the consolidated view is good for

  • Spotting which venues account for most reported ETH OI.
  • Comparing simultaneous increases or decreases across exchanges.
  • Building a dashboard without maintaining a separate collector for every venue.
  • Finding a venue that merits native-API verification.

Where it can mislead

  • The aggregate may exclude an unsupported exchange or contract family.
  • A 10-second cache means the displayed value can lag a venue’s live state by that interval or longer during delays.
  • USD and coin series are not interchangeable.
  • Provider methodology can change, so keep the endpoint version or retrieval date in your records.

Read Binance USDⓈ-M data directly

Binance publishes its USDⓈ-M Futures market-data REST documentation at Market Data – Futures (USDⓈ-M) REST API. The documentation describes a current open-interest request that requires a symbol, plus open-interest statistics with an interval selection.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Identify the ETH USDⓈ-M symbol that matches your intended contract and pass that required symbol to the current-OI request.
  2. Store the returned timestamp and all relevant fields. The documentation describes historical fields including contract quantity and a value field; retain both rather than discarding the native measure.
  3. For a trend, select an interval in the open-interest-statistics request and record that interval beside each observation.
  4. Apply the documented retention constraint: only the latest 30 days are available from the cited statistics endpoint. Export or archive observations if you need a longer history.
  5. Label the result as Binance USDⓈ-M data. Do not expand it to all Binance derivatives or all ETH futures markets.

The native route is particularly useful when a consolidated total moves but you need to determine whether the change came from this venue. It also gives you a product-specific reading that can be compared with an aggregator only after units, timestamps and scope are matched.

Build a repeatable collection workflow

A small data model prevents most comparison errors. Whether you use a spreadsheet, database or script, keep the descriptive fields alongside the number.

Minimum fields for each observation

  • Retrieval timestamp and source timestamp, both with timezone.
  • Provider and endpoint name.
  • Exchange and product type: perpetual, dated futures or combined.
  • Exact symbol where the source exposes one.
  • Unit: contracts, coin or USD.
  • Raw OI value and any native contract multiplier.
  • Normalized value, with the conversion formula and price source if converted to USD.
  • Interval or snapshot designation.
  • Coverage notes, including omitted venues or unsupported products.
  • Missing-data, error or stale-cache status.

Polling and storage

Poll each source at a cadence appropriate to its documented behavior. A feed documented as updating every 10 seconds does not justify millisecond polling. Respect authentication, rate and plan requirements stated by the provider, and back off when requests fail. Store immutable raw responses where possible, then derive normalized columns so a methodology change does not destroy the original evidence.

Reconciliation checks

  1. Match the same exchange, contract type, symbol, unit and timestamp window.
  2. Compare raw values first; convert only after confirming the contract multiplier and valuation method.
  3. Check whether one source is cached or sampled while the other is live.
  4. Look for omitted venues, delisted contracts, maintenance windows or missing records.
  5. Log the reason for any residual difference instead of silently averaging the numbers.

Use historical OI without hitting record limits

CoinGlass documents an aggregated OI history endpoint in OHLC form. The reference accepts a coin, interval, timestamps and unit, and the cited documentation sets a maximum of 1,000 returned records per request. See Futures – Open Interest – Aggregated History (OHLC).

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Choose the ETH symbol, unit and interval before selecting a time range.
  2. Request no more than 1,000 records at a time.
  3. For longer periods, divide the range into adjacent windows and use the returned timestamps to avoid gaps or duplicate candles.
  4. Persist the raw OHLC fields and the request parameters, including interval and unit.
  5. Check your plan’s access restrictions; endpoint availability and limits can change.

OHLC history is not equivalent to a list of every intraperiod position change. The open, high, low and close summarize the sampled OI over each interval. Use a current exchange-list snapshot when you need the latest venue breakdown, and use OHLC history for trend analysis.

Interpret OI changes with price and scope

Interpretation should begin with the exact series you collected. A rise in a USD OI series can result from more contracts, a higher ETH valuation, or both. A rise in a coin series more directly indicates additional ETH-denominated exposure, but it still does not identify direction.

Observation What it establishes What it does not establish
OI rises under a fixed scope and unit More outstanding exposure is reported under that definition That traders are net bullish or that the move will continue
OI falls Outstanding exposure decreases, or contracts leave the measured scope That longs or shorts specifically were liquidated or closed
USD OI rises while coin OI is flat The valuation of existing exposure increased, or the feeds use different methods That additional ETH contracts were opened
One exchange diverges from an aggregate The sources report different values at that moment Which source is wrong without checking scope, timing and methodology

Pair OI with the price series for the same interval and clearly label any additional indicators. Treat correlations as context, not proof of causation.

Troubleshoot common tracking failures

The total is lower than expected

Check whether the provider supports the exchange, whether dated futures or perpetuals were excluded, and whether the “All” row aggregates only listed products. Compare the provider’s exchange list with your intended venue inventory.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Two feeds show different USD values

Confirm that both use the same unit, price basis, timestamp and contract multiplier. If one is cached, wait for a matching update before escalating the discrepancy.

Your historical request stops unexpectedly

For Binance’s cited open-interest statistics endpoint, the documented history is limited to the latest 30 days. For CoinGlass aggregated OHLC, split requests at the documented 1,000-record maximum and verify plan access.

A chart has gaps

Record missing intervals instead of filling them with zero. A zero would imply no open interest, while a missing value only proves that the feed did not return an observation. Check maintenance periods, unsupported symbols and request errors.

The reading changes when you switch dashboards

Compare the dashboard’s contract scope, unit and timestamp first. A venue chart may show one product while an aggregator combines products or values them in USD. Preserve the source definition in the chart title or metadata.

Comparison checklist for tracking options

Evaluate any feed against the same questions before adopting it:

  • Venue coverage: Are the exchanges you need listed individually?
  • Contract coverage: Are perpetual and dated futures separated, combined or omitted?
  • Refresh behavior: Is the interval live, sampled or cached? CoinGlass documents a 10-second cache/update frequency for its exchange-list and exchange-history references.
  • Resolution: Can you request snapshots, regular intervals and OHLC history?
  • History: Does the endpoint retain only recent data, such as Binance’s documented latest-30-day statistics window?
  • Units and valuation: Are contract, coin and USD fields available, and is the USD method explained?
  • Transparency: Can you see each exchange series rather than only an unexplained total?
  • Access: What authentication, plan, rate and record limits apply?
  • Archiving: Can you save raw responses so a later methodology change is detectable?

There is no universally best route. A trader who needs one venue’s exact product may prefer its native endpoint, while an analyst comparing market structure across venues may start with an aggregator and verify important moves at the source.
