To track a shipment from a PHP website, either send the visitor to the selected courier’s official tracking page or call a documented tracking API from your server and show the result on your own site. For an India-focused, multi-courier site, use a provider whose current documentation confirms the couriers you need; there is no single tracking URL or number format that works for every courier.
Choose how tracking should work
A redirect is the simplest approach when each courier has a stable, documented tracking-page URL. An API is the better fit when you want to keep visitors on your site, display consistent tracking details, or support several couriers through one integration. Avoid building a production integration by copying requests from a courier’s public tracking page: its internal behavior can change without notice. A SitePoint Forums participant made this distinction in 2019, noting that API users are more likely to receive warning of changes.

Option 1: redirect to the courier’s official tracking page
Keep an allowlist of courier keys and URL templates on the server. Do not accept an arbitrary URL from the browser: otherwise, a user could make your site redirect visitors to an unrelated or unsafe destination. The visitor selects a courier key, enters a tracking number, and submits the form; PHP uses only the matching allowlisted template.

- Confirm the route. For each supported courier, check its current official tracking instructions and determine whether it accepts a tracking number in a GET URL. Some tracking forms may use POST instead, so do not assume a query-string URL works for every carrier.
- Validate the selection. Look up the submitted courier key in the server-side allowlist. Reject unknown keys rather than treating the key as a URL.
- Validate and encode the number. Apply length and character rules appropriate to that courier, then URL-encode the value when inserting it into the approved template. Do not apply one courier’s format rules to all carriers.
- Redirect. Send the visitor to the resulting HTTPS URL. If the carrier changes its route, update your allowlist after verifying the new official route.
The SitePoint forum example illustrates the basic idea with a FedEx URL and a tracking number in a query parameter. It is an example of the pattern, not a guarantee that every carrier has the same URL structure or that the example remains current.

Option 2: show tracking results with an API
For a tracking page inside your site, PHP should make the request to the API and render the response. A multi-carrier service can offer courier detection and a normalized tracking response; a direct carrier API avoids adding an aggregator when you only need one carrier, but requires you to integrate that carrier’s request and response model.
Multi-carrier providers
AfterShip’s PHP SDK documentation, accessed in 2026, lists PHP 8.1 or later, API-key authentication, courier detection, courier connections, tracking endpoints, and retracking. TrackCourier.io documents a request in the form GET /v1/track?courier={slug}&tracking_number={number}, authenticated with an X-API-Key header, and describes status and checkpoint output. Its site advertises 171+ couriers; verify that its current supported-courier list includes the specific Indian services you plan to offer.

Direct carrier integration
Canada Post’s Tracking Web Service is an example of a carrier-specific REST integration: its documentation describes a GET request using a tracking pin in the path, an appropriate Accept header, and PHP samples. That example is specific to Canada Post; it does not establish an endpoint or access terms for Indian couriers.
PHP request pattern
The following shows the server-side shape of a request to a provider that documents the TrackCourier.io-style endpoint. Configure the provider’s documented API base URL and API key in the server environment; no current official base URL was published, so this example intentionally does not invent one. Check the provider’s current authentication and response schema before adapting the response-handling code.

Populate the allowlist from the provider’s current documentation, and validate numbers according to the selected courier’s rules. Escape every API-supplied value before inserting it into HTML; do not assume external status text is safe to render.

Handle credentials, errors, and changing service terms
- Keep secrets server-side. Store API keys in environment configuration or another server-side secret store, never in page JavaScript, HTML, or a public repository.
- Set timeouts and fail clearly. Distinguish invalid input from provider failures. Handle connection timeouts, non-success HTTP responses, invalid JSON, and missing tracking records without exposing credentials or raw provider errors to visitors.
- Check usage limits and commercial terms. API quotas, pricing, supported couriers, API versions, and program terms can change. Confirm the current details with the provider before launch and monitor usage afterward.
- Plan for updates. Pin and test SDK versions, review provider change notices, and verify that your carrier list and supported request fields remain current. Webhook support and retracking behavior depend on the chosen service and its current terms.
What to check before launching in India
- List the exact Indian courier services your users need; do not treat “India coverage” as proof that every local courier is supported.
- For a redirect implementation, verify each carrier’s official tracking route and whether it accepts GET or requires a different form flow.
- For an API implementation, confirm the provider’s current carrier coverage, PHP/runtime requirements, authentication method, response fields, quotas, cost, version policy, and any webhook or retracking features you rely on.
- Test valid numbers, malformed input, unknown courier keys, provider timeouts, and no-result responses before exposing the form to customers.
