How do I track AI API usage?
Start with the account or organization that owns the billing relationship, then review the provider’s usage and cost reporting for a billing period that reflects your workload. Provider dashboards show billed usage at the levels and time intervals they support; request-level token details and your own logs help explain how that usage arose. Neither view alone necessarily answers both questions.

OpenAI API
OpenAI’s Usage Dashboard can show current and past billing periods, and exports support broader analysis. Dashboard data is displayed in UTC. Viewing it requires organization-owner status or Usage Dashboard permission. Its project selector is independent of the project selected elsewhere in the API Platform, so verify the project shown before interpreting a project-level view.
An individual API response may include usage information, but response fields are endpoint-specific; do not assume every API response has the same format. Use the dashboard for broader billing-period analysis and request data where available to investigate particular calls.

Google Gemini API
Google directs users to Google AI Studio > Dashboard > Usage to monitor Gemini API usage. Google describes Prepay and Postpay billing plans as starting to take effect on March 23, 2026. Assignment and transition may depend on account age and rollout status, so check the billing page for the account you use rather than assuming a particular plan applies to every account. Google also says linked projects inherit a billing account’s usage tier and its associated rate limits and account caps; that is not a universal spending-control mechanism shared across providers. Anthropic Claude API
Anthropic’s Console reporting article describes cost and usage reporting, including a daily cost chart. It says users with Developer, Billing, and Admin roles can view the report. Add application-level attribution
Provider reports may not show which feature, customer, or workflow caused a cost. Where lawful and appropriate, record your own identifiers alongside application requests and usage data. This lets you investigate internal cost drivers without treating provider-level project totals as a substitute for application attribution.
How do I set a spending limit for API usage?
First decide whether you need an early warning or a control that can interrupt traffic. Then identify the scope of the setting and what the application should do if a request is rejected. OpenAI documents both alerts and configurable hard limits; controls differ at other providers, so check the relevant billing and usage settings rather than assuming equivalent behavior.

Configure OpenAI alerts and limits
OpenAI documents monthly spend limits at organization and project level. A person needs permission to manage the relevant settings. The documented paths are Organization limits for organization settings and Project settings > Limits for project settings. Consult the current OpenAI Spend limits guide for the live controls.
- An organization-level limit applies across the organization’s projects.
- A project-level limit applies to traffic billed to that project.
- Organization and project limits can both apply.
- Spend alerts remain active when a hard limit is added, so an alert can notify you before traffic is interrupted.
OpenAI distinguishes configured spend limits from the separate monthly usage limit it approves for an organization. It also documents a difference between the notification and enforcement controls: an alert sends a notification while API traffic continues; a hard limit can cause affected requests to return a 429 error when tracked spend reaches the applicable limit.

Do not treat a configured hard limit as an exact billing ceiling. OpenAI warns that enforcement is not instantaneous and recorded spend can slightly exceed the configured amount while the limit state propagates. Its Spend limits guide states: “Hard spend limits can interrupt production traffic.”

Choose thresholds around operational risk
Set notification thresholds early enough to investigate before a business-critical limit is reached. For any enforced limit, consider which application paths would fail, how users would experience those failures, and whether the application can handle them safely. A limit that protects a budget may also interrupt legitimate production requests.

Not in OpenAI’s documented setup: spend alerts notify you while API traffic continues. A hard spend limit is the control that can reject affected requests. Do not use the words “alert” and “cap” interchangeably, and verify the behavior of the billing controls for each provider you use.
How can I see API costs by project?
Use the provider’s project or account reporting where available, and confirm the selected project and billing owner. For OpenAI, project selection in the Usage Dashboard is separate from the project selected elsewhere in the API Platform. A dashboard’s project total still may not identify the feature or customer behind a call; internal attribution can supply that missing context.
When comparing projects, align billing periods and time zones first. OpenAI displays Usage Dashboard data in UTC. Reconcile provider reports with application logs and invoice or cost exports, taking into account that request-level usage and billed totals answer different questions.

For OpenAI, a 429 billing-related error can indicate that a configured spend limit has been reached, but it is not the only possible explanation. Check the error details and account state rather than assuming every 429 has the same cause. The failure may relate to a configured spend limit, the organization’s separate approved usage limit, or exhausted prepaid credits. These are distinct from rate limits.
If production requests are affected, inspect the applicable organization and project limits, confirm which project billed the request, and check available billing or credit information. Account permissions determine who can manage settings, while Usage Dashboard visibility has its own permission requirements. Do not assume that changing a limit will take effect instantaneously.
