Store timestamped observations and compare equivalent products and offers; a single current-price response is not a complete history.
Choose the monitoring route that matches the decision
| Need | Starting route | Key considerations |
|---|---|---|
| Seller needs current offer and competitive signals to inform its own prices | Amazon SP-API Product Pricing API | Seller eligibility and role, marketplace access, ASIN/SKU coverage, signal definitions, notifications, and integration work. |
| Analyst needs tracked offer history and price alerts for selected products | Third-party provider such as Keepa | Marketplace coverage, history completeness and freshness, offer selection, API limits and price, notification delivery, and permitted use. |
| Shopper needs a quick view of recent movement | Amazon price-history feature | Country availability, product-page availability, and history period offered. |
| Seller wants Amazon to change its own offer price according to rules | Amazon Automate Pricing | Professional-plan eligibility, price limits, rule behavior, and performance outcomes. |
These routes are not interchangeable. SP-API returns defined seller-facing pricing and offer signals; a third-party tracker may provide histories accumulated over time; Amazon’s customer feature is a viewing aid; Automate Pricing executes repricing rules on your offers.

What Amazon’s seller API can and cannot tell you
Product Pricing API access and coverage
Amazon lists the Product Pricing API version v2022-05-01 as current and availability as “Sellers only.” The API is designed for seller pricing-management solutions, not unrestricted public access to every competitor’s historical prices. The documented competitive-summary and Featured Offer Expected Price operations require the Pricing role. Check eligibility and marketplace context before building around a field or operation. See Amazon’s Product Pricing API documentation.

The getCompetitiveSummary operation provides competitive details for an ASIN and featured buying-option information. Amazon documents batch sizes of up to 40 SKUs for Featured Offer Expected Price data and up to 20 ASINs for featured-offer data; these are per-operation batch sizes, not overall tracking limits.

Interpret each field by its definition
Do not treat every price-like field as the current competitor offer. Amazon’s averageSellingPrice is based on purchases during the previous 60 days and excludes prices and quantities during promotions such as Best Deals and Lightning Deals. Amazon defines Price by Amazon (retailOfferPrice) as the highest price listed in the previous 14 days for products shipped and sold by Amazon. These measures answer different questions from a live offer price. Amazon’s Product Pricing API and Notifications FAQ describes the fields and notifications.
Use notifications for changes, snapshots for analysis
Amazon documents ANY_OFFER_CHANGED and PRICE_HEALTH notifications alongside pull operations. Notifications can make a system more responsive, while scheduled observations give you data to analyze over time. Persist each observation with its timestamp and marketplace; a notification stream or one API response should not be presented as a complete historical record.

When a third-party offer history fits better
Keepa documents marketplace offer objects that may contain seller, condition, fulfillment and Prime flags, coupons, and price, shipping, stock, and Prime-exclusive histories. Its tracking object supports desired-price thresholds, marketplace locale identifiers, and API notification delivery, including out-of-stock and back-in-stock criteria. See the Keepa Marketplace Offer Object and Keepa Tracking Creation Object.

History is not necessarily complete or current: Keepa warns that returned offers may be stale or incomplete, histories can have gaps, and responses may include only the requested number of offers. Its documentation advises checking lastSeen and update information and requesting data regularly when fuller offer coverage is needed. Treat missing observations as unknown, not evidence that a price remained unchanged. Review the provider’s marketplace coverage, terms, commercial plan, limits, freshness, offer-selection behavior, and notification delivery before relying on it.

Use Amazon’s built-in history for a quick check
Amazon describes customer-facing price history views for 30, 90, and 365 days. Its page lists availability in the U.S., UK, Canada, and India; the 365-day insights rollout specifically names the U.S., UK, and India. Availability and product-page presentation can vary, so check the relevant marketplace. The announcement was published May 1, 2026, and updated June 24, 2026. See Amazon’s explanation of its price-history feature.
This is useful for a fast indication of recent movement, but it is not a substitute for a data pipeline when you need structured observations across selected ASINs or offers. Amazon’s announcement says Rufus was renamed Alexa for Shopping on May 13, 2026; interface wording may therefore differ from older guidance.

Separate competitive monitoring from automatic repricing
Amazon Automate Pricing changes your own offer according to seller-defined rules; it is not an independent, broad historical price database. Amazon says it is included with the Professional selling plan and requires a Professional selling account and an active offer. Sellers can set minimum and optional maximum price limits and review a detailed 30-day history alongside business reports. Details are on Amazon Automate Pricing.
Set a defensible floor and, where needed, ceiling before enabling a rule. Amazon says repricing does not guarantee Featured Offer status: inventory availability, fulfillment, customer service, and other eligibility factors also matter. Use monitoring to inform a decision; use repricing only when you intend to change your own offer.

Build a useful monitoring workflow
- Define the decision and tracked unit. Specify whether you are tracking an ASIN, a particular offer or seller, your own SKU, or a competing listing. Record marketplace and currency, and decide whether condition, fulfillment, shipping, and coupons are part of the effective price.
- Select a permitted source. Sellers should check SP-API roles and marketplace access. For a third-party service, examine its terms, commercial plan, coverage, and API limits. The sources here do not establish permission for arbitrary Amazon scraping or verify any particular external program’s partner terms.
- Collect changes and periodic observations. Use available event notifications for responsiveness and scheduled snapshots for analysis. Save timestamps and marketplace context alongside each observation.
- Validate freshness and gaps. Check update or last-seen data where available. Mark missing periods as unknown instead of carrying the last recorded price forward as fact.
- Normalize before comparing. Match pack size, variant, condition, and fulfillment type. Amazon’s FAQ notes that its external competitive price can account for unit pricing across different pack sizes and may use near-identical products as comparables; product matching affects whether a comparison is meaningful.
- Keep monitoring separate from execution. Review competitive signals before changing prices. If you use Automate Pricing, evaluate outcomes with Seller Central reports and retain price limits appropriate to your business.

For a clean screenshot of a product page or other reference page, ScreenshotNeo offers a one-request screenshot API and an MCP server for AI agents. It is a capture tool, not a replacement for SP-API or an offer-history provider: use it when a visual record is useful alongside structured price data.

Common monitoring problems and fixes
- The API operation or field is unavailable: verify that the SP-API seller role and marketplace context permit it; the documented competitive-summary and Featured Offer Expected Price operations require the Pricing role.
- A price looks unlike the live offer: check the field definition and period. Average Selling Price is a 60-day purchase measure with promotional purchases excluded; Price by Amazon is defined using the highest price in the prior 14 days for Amazon-shipped and -sold products.
- An offer appears old or is missing: check last-seen and update information, request data regularly, and treat gaps as unknown. Provider history can be incomplete, and an offer response may be limited to a requested count.
- Two prices do not compare fairly: verify ASIN/variant, pack size, condition, fulfillment, shipping, coupon treatment, marketplace, and currency before drawing a conclusion.
- An automated price change does not win the Featured Offer: review eligibility factors such as inventory, fulfillment, and customer service; a lower price alone does not guarantee placement.
Costs, limits, and reliability checks
Do not infer a total tracking capacity from a batch size: Amazon’s documented 40-SKU and 20-ASIN figures apply to particular operations. For a third-party API, compare its actual request limits, plan cost, notification delivery, and coverage against the number of products and collection cadence you need. Price-history quality depends on observations actually collected; gaps and stale offers limit what you can conclude. Budget for integration and validation as well as the provider plan, and preserve source timestamps so analysts can distinguish fresh observations from older ones.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can I use Amazon SP-API to monitor competitor prices?
The Product Pricing API is seller-facing, and access and returned signals depend on the required role and marketplace context. It is not documented as unrestricted access to all competitor prices or complete price histories.
Does Amazon’s price-history feature show the same period everywhere?
No. Amazon lists the feature in the U.S., UK, Canada, and India, while its stated rollout of 365-day insights names the U.S., UK, and India. Check the current product-page feature in your marketplace.
Does Amazon Automate Pricing guarantee the Featured Offer?
No. Amazon says price is only one factor; inventory, fulfillment, customer service, and other eligibility criteria also matter.
