For a title, check the service’s own notice and a country-specific availability guide; for ownership, follow dated company announcements and investor filings until a transaction is confirmed complete. A show disappearing is usually a licensing or availability change—not proof that the service changed owners.
Why a title can leave without the service changing owners
Streaming catalogs depend on rights and licensing. Netflix says titles can leave when licensing agreements expire and that it considers factors including whether rights remain available, a title’s regional popularity, and license cost. That describes Netflix’s stated process; it should not be assumed to explain every removal on every service. Netflix: Why do TV shows and movies leave Netflix?

A title’s rights, the company that owns a studio or library, and the company that controls a streaming service are separate questions. A corporate announcement may describe a proposed deal or planned separation, but it does not by itself confirm that the transaction closed or that particular titles moved to a new service.

How to check whether a title is leaving or available
Check the service’s own title page
For Netflix, a title scheduled to leave within the next month may display “Last day to watch on Netflix” on its details page and briefly at the start of playback. Netflix says it gives a heads-up when an expiring title is not renewed. Select the relevant country on its help page, and record the country and date you checked: the notice and catalog are not a worldwide status. Other services may use different notices. Cross-check a country-specific availability guide
JustWatch lists legal subscription, ad-supported, rental, and purchase offers, and lets users filter by services they use. Its terms describe optional watchlist notifications for availability changes, while cautioning that availability can change and is not guaranteed. Use a guide to discover or monitor where a title appears, then confirm an important listing with the service itself. JustWatch: What is JustWatch? · JustWatch Terms of Use
- Check the reader’s country, not just the title name.
- Distinguish subscription access from free-with-ads, rental, or purchase.
- Record the date; third-party listings and licenses can change.
How to track ownership separately
- Define the entity. Record the service brand, its parent or controlling company, relevant studios or rights owners, and the individual title or library. These are not interchangeable.
- Find a primary company source. Use investor-relations announcements and securities filings for transaction claims. Note the publication date, parties, assets in scope, conditions, expected milestones, and the exact status language.
- Keep status labels precise. Mark a deal as announced, pending, completed, or reported, as supported by the source. An announced or expected transaction is not a completed one.
- Update only when a later primary source supports it. Look for confirmation of approval, separation, closing, or another relevant status change. Do not infer a title-by-title catalog move from a change in corporate ownership.
Example: Netflix’s announced Warner Bros. transaction
On December 5, 2025, Netflix announced a definitive agreement to acquire Warner Bros., including its film and television studios, HBO Max, and HBO. Netflix’s announcement put the transaction’s total enterprise value at approximately $82.7 billion and its equity value at $72.0 billion. Those are figures from that announcement, not a statement that the acquisition closed. Netflix Investor Relations, December 5, 2025

The announcement said closing was expected after the planned separation of WBD’s Global Networks division into Discovery Global, then expected in Q3 2026, and remained subject to approvals and other conditions. Treat that as the expectation stated on December 5, 2025, not as a current closing date; check newer company or regulatory records before describing current status.
Earlier, on July 28, 2025, Warner Bros. Discovery described a planned Streaming & Studios company, Warner Bros., and a Global Networks company, Discovery Global. The planned Warner Bros. entity was to include Warner Bros. Television, Warner Bros. Motion Picture Group, DC Studios, HBO, HBO Max, Warner Bros. Gaming Studios, and film and television libraries. Discovery Global was described as including Discovery+, CNN, TNT Sports in the U.S., and Bleacher Report. This was the company’s announced plan on that date; it does not establish the present corporate structure or where an individual title streams. Warner Bros.
