How to Track a Satellite or Spacecraft in Real Time

Use NASA Spot the Station for ISS passes, CelesTrak for Earth-orbit data, and JPL Horizons for selected distant spacecraft—with a clear understanding of data age and prediction limits.

For the International Space Station, use NASA’s Spot the Station to find local viewing opportunities and alerts. For other Earth-orbiting satellites, use a tracker that identifies its orbital-data source and freshness, or get current orbital elements from CelesTrak. For selected spacecraft beyond Earth orbit, use JPL Horizons—but its trajectory products are not a live GPS-style feed.

How can I see when the ISS will pass over my house?

Start with NASA’s Spot the Station website or mobile app. Select or enter your location to see scheduled viewing opportunities and, where available, receive alerts. A predicted pass is an opportunity, not a guarantee that you will see the station: local sky conditions and the actual viewing circumstances matter.

NASA says the ISS completes about 16 orbits each day and follows an orbit inclined 51.6° to Earth’s equator. Those figures describe its orbit; they do not establish whether a particular pass will be visible from your location.

Where is the International Space Station right now?

Spot the Station is the straightforward official starting point for ISS tracking and location-based viewing schedules. A map or position display shows a calculated location based on orbital information; it should not be read as proof that the ISS is transmitting its position to your phone in real time.

How do I track another satellite in real time?

For an Earth-orbiting object other than the ISS, look it up by name or catalog number in a tracker or orbital catalog. Before relying on the displayed position, check where its orbital data came from, when that data was generated, and whether the service supports the data format used for the object.

Use CelesTrak for orbital data

CelesTrak’s current GP element sets provide orbital data in multiple formats. Its space-station data page illustrates why the epoch and data age matter: orbital elements describe an orbit at a particular time, and a tracker calculates a position from them.

Nooelec Iridium Patch Antenna - High Gain (3dBi) 1620MHz PCB Antenna with SMA Connector for Iridium and Other L-Band Applications. 1.62GHz Center Frequency and 80MHz+ Bandwidth
  • This small Iridium patch antenna is meant for size-sensitive and portable applications. It is only 82mm x 80mm (3.25" x 3.10") and weighs just 25g (0.9oz)!
  • The antenna has 3.1dBi of gain, a center frequency of 1620MHz, and a bandwidth of about 80MHz
  • As this is a passive antenna, for most applications you will want to pair this with a quality LNA such as our SAWbird IR and SAWbird+ IR LNA modules (available on Amazon separately, product IDs B07K1KD4T9 and B07K1LW983 respectively)
  • Full 2 year warranty directly through Nooelec

There is also a format issue for newer objects. CelesTrak warns that the USSF catalog exceeded the five-digit range in July 2026; new six-digit catalog numbers cannot be represented in legacy TLE format. CelesTrak directs users to formats without that five-digit limit, including OMM variants. Check the current data page and confirm that your chosen app or software accepts the relevant format rather than assuming every tracker can handle the newest catalog entries.

Understand how current the prediction is

NASA’s Open APIs page describes its TLE API records as updated daily from CelesTrak. That is an update cadence for those records, not a promise that every third-party tracker refreshes at the same rate. Check the data age or element-set epoch in the service you are actually using.

Nooelec GOES Weather Satellite Mesh Antenna - 21dBi Parabolic Antenna w/ 1.7GHz Center Frequency, 200MHz+ Bandwidth, LMR400 Feed Cable with Male SMA Connector, Mounting Hardware, & 2 Year Warranty
  • This 21dB antenna is designed to be used in conjuntion with an RF system (SDR, filter & LNA) to provide detailed, high-resolution, near real-time images from orbiting weather satellites. Applications include GOES (HRIT & LRIT), NOAA HRPT, Meteor M2 HRPT, Metop, FengYun and other satellites that operate near 1.6GHz-1.8GHz
  • Can be deployed for both linearly and circularly polarized signals (RHCP and LHCP)
  • Software is required for the decoding of images. The recommended option is SatDump, which is cross-platform and available for Windows, Linux, MacOS and Android. There are also other free Linux-based decoders, or the paid version of XRIT Decoder for Windows (license not included with purchase)
  • Full support and service directly through Nooelec! Additional information and assembly instructions: support.nooelec.com/hc/en-us/articles/360058812593

Freshness is particularly important in low Earth orbit. The JPL Horizons manual cautions that forecasts more than a few days ahead can be wrong by tens or hundreds of kilometers, especially when a prediction based on TLEs does not account for maneuvers. Treat a predicted position or pass as an estimate, and recheck with fresh data near the time you plan to observe.

Can I track a spacecraft outside Earth orbit?

For selected spacecraft beyond Earth orbit, use JPL Horizons. Its available interfaces and target coverage are described in the Horizons manual. Search for the target and choose output suited to the task: observer output for viewing coordinates, vectors for state data, or orbital elements when those are what your analysis needs.

Check the spacecraft trajectory’s revision date, comments, and usable time span. Trajectories can become stale if updates stop, so a result should not be assumed current merely because Horizons can produce it.

Is satellite tracking actually real time?

Usually, “real time” means a tracker is displaying a position calculated from orbital data current enough for its purpose—not that the satellite is sending a live GPS-like location to the service. The JPL Horizons manual, version 4.98e dated 2026-08-25, states: “Spacecraft trajectory data is not being relayed in ‘real-time’, and is not like a reading off a GPS display.”

The right tool depends on what you want to do: Spot the Station for ISS pass opportunities and alerts; an Earth-orbit tracker or CelesTrak data for other satellites; and Horizons for supported spacecraft beyond Earth orbit. In each case, data provenance, age, target coverage, and output type determine how much confidence to put in the displayed position.
