Check your ballot through the official state or local election office responsible for it. If the status says “rejected,” or the office contacts you about a problem, contact that office promptly: cure rules, required documents, accepted delivery methods and deadlines depend on your jurisdiction and election.
Find the official tracker for your ballot
- Start with the office that issued or processes your ballot. Look at your state election website or the local election office website for the county responsible for your ballot. The Arizona Secretary of State’s ballot-tracking guidance and Vote.org’s state directory can help you find the right place; use the responsible election office, not a directory, to confirm your ballot’s status and instructions.
- Enter the requested information carefully. Some trackers are updated by local offices, so a status change may not appear immediately. New Jersey’s tracker advises voters to check periodically and contact county election officials with questions.
- If no online record appears, ask the election office. Some states do not offer online tracking. Missing data in a tracker alone does not establish that a ballot was rejected or was not delivered; ask the election office responsible for it.
Understand what the status actually says
Status labels and update timing are not national standards. Read the definition on the tracker you are using, and ask the election office if it is unclear whether you need to act.

New Jersey’s labels are one state’s example
New Jersey describes “N/A” as not yet received by the county board; “Received” as received but still subject to an envelope-signature review; “Rejected” as rejected; and “Accepted” as counted. County update timing can vary. These definitions should not be applied to another state’s tracker.
Notifications can supplement a tracker
Leon County, Florida, says its BallotTrax service can send email or text notices when a ballot is mailed, received and counted. Los Angeles County offers Where’s My Ballot notifications as well as a separate status tool. If a notification and the official tracker appear to disagree or lag, check with the responsible election office.

What to do if your ballot is rejected
- Contact the election office promptly. Use the office identified by the tracker or your ballot materials. Ask what the displayed status means, what defect was identified and whether a correction is still possible. A status page may lag local processing.
- Get the exact cure instructions. Ask whether the problem can be cured, which form and supporting documents are required, how they may be submitted, and the deadline for this election. Do not assume that a process used in another county or state applies to you.
- Submit the correction by the specified method and deadline. Follow the office’s instructions rather than relying on a general rule about email, mail, fax or in-person delivery.
- Check that the office received your cure. Keep any confirmation you receive, then revisit the official tracker or contact the office to verify that the correction was received and the ballot’s status changed. There is no universal confirmation schedule established by the cited election-office guidance.
Local examples show why instructions matter
| Jurisdiction | Example of cure guidance | Scope |
|---|---|---|
| New Jersey | State guidance says voters may cure a missing or non-matching signature through voter certification; the state describes notification by email, phone call or letter and county-level status updates. | New Jersey’s process; confirm the instructions and deadline for your ballot with the county election office. |
| Leon County, Florida | For a missing or mismatched signature, the county instructs voters to submit a Vote-by-Mail Ballot Cure Affidavit and a photocopy of ID. Its page gives a 5 p.m. Thursday-after-Election-Day deadline for that signature cure. | Leon County’s stated process and deadline, not a statewide or national deadline. |
These examples concern signature issues. They do not establish that every rejection is curable or that the same documents or deadline apply to other defects.
Check the return deadline, delivery options and postage
Find out whether the ballot must be postmarked or received
USAGov advises voters to check whether their applicable deadline is based on the postmark or the election office’s receipt. Return options may also differ: a jurisdiction may allow drop-box or in-person delivery, but you should confirm the options and instructions with the election office handling your ballot.

Mail early enough for the rule that applies
The United States Postal Service recommends that domestic, nonmilitary voters who return a completed ballot by mail send it before Election Day and at least one week before the deadline by which the election office must receive it. USPS notes that some states recommend more time. If you want the postmark date to match the day you mail the ballot, USPS says you can present it at a retail counter and request a free manual postmark.

A 2023 report by the USPS Office of Inspector General said more than 120,000 mail ballots were rejected because of mismatched or missing voter signatures in the 2018 general election. The report also said 18 states allowed voters to attempt to cure some ballot problems, such as signature issues. Both figures describe historical findings—not current rejection rates or a verified count of states’ present-day cure laws. For your ballot, the election office’s instructions for the current election are the relevant guide.
