To trace a bug, first turn its symptom into a repeatable case, then follow runtime state until it first diverges from what the code should do. A stack trace or crash line can show where execution ended up, but the original fault may be earlier. Make one focused change and rerun the same case to test whether your explanation holds.
What does it mean to trace a bug?
A symptom is an observation, not a diagnosis. “The screen goes blank” or “the request fails” describes what you see; it does not yet say why it happened or which line is responsible.

Write down three things before changing code:
- Observed result: what the program actually does, including any error message or unexpected output.
- Expected result: what should happen for the same inputs and actions.
- Reproduction context: the smallest known sequence, relevant data, runtime, operating system, build, configuration, and any timing conditions.
This gives you a concrete mismatch to investigate and a way to tell whether a proposed fix worked.
How do I reproduce an intermittent bug?
Start with the steps that appear to trigger the issue and run them more than once. Remove unrelated actions and reduce the data set while checking that the failure still occurs. The aim is not merely to make a short test case; it is to preserve the conditions that produce the symptom.

If the failure appears only sometimes, record what differs between runs—such as input data, timing, configuration, or execution order. One successful run does not disprove an intermittent failure. Apple’s Xcode guidance likewise recommends developing reliable reproduction steps before narrowing down a cause.
How do I use a debugger to find the first unexpected state?
Choose an observation point
Work backward from the visible symptom to the operation that should produce the expected result: perhaps an event handler, request, function, or state transition. Set a breakpoint before the result first appears to go wrong, rather than assuming the line that displays the symptom is the cause.

When execution pauses, inspect the call stack to see how the program arrived there and examine the current state. Visual Studio’s breakpoint guidance describes inspecting both app state and the call stack when stopped at a breakpoint.

Identify the inputs and variables that carry the data or state involved in the failure. Step into a call when you need to see its internal logic; step over it when you only need to observe its result. Compare what happens with what the code path requires, continuing until you find the earliest unexpected value, decision, or branch.
The top frame in a stack trace and the line where a crash occurs are useful clues, but they are not guaranteed to be the original fault location. An invalid value may have been created earlier and only caused trouble later. Apple’s Xcode stepping guidance covers inspecting variables while stepping through execution; its breakpoint guidance cautions that a stack trace may not point directly to where the problem occurs.
What if the bug disappears when I pause?
Pausing changes execution timing. In concurrent or timing-sensitive code, a bug may occur during ordinary execution but disappear when you step through it. In that situation, observation should disturb execution as little as possible.

- Use logs or a conditional breakpoint to capture only relevant events or states.
- Where supported, configure a breakpoint action or logging breakpoint to record information and continue without suspending the program.
- Preserve context such as the inputs and sequence around the event so the recorded output can be interpreted.
Apple’s diagnosis guidance discusses how stepping can affect timing and describes breakpoint actions for logging without pausing. Android Studio’s debugger documentation describes logging breakpoints that write to Logcat without suspending execution.

How do I test whether I found the root cause?
Make one focused change that should correct the specific divergence you observed. Then rerun the same reproduction steps with the same relevant inputs and check whether the original expected result now occurs. If a suitable test exists, add or run it to protect the case.

If the symptom remains, the explanation may be incomplete or the change may have addressed a downstream effect rather than the cause. Return to the runtime evidence, revise the hypothesis, and isolate the next possibility instead of accumulating speculative fixes. Apple’s documented workflow includes changing code and retesting the reproduction, then reconsidering the suspected location if the change does not resolve the issue.
Which debugger capabilities matter?
Choose tools by the capabilities needed for the bug and the environment in which it occurs, not by assuming one debugger is best for every project. Check whether the tool can:
- Stop at source lines or when specified conditions are met.
- Show the call stack and inspect variables at a stop.
- Step through execution while watching state change.
- Log relevant information without stopping execution, if timing matters.
- Map runtime frames to the source and build you are investigating.
- Work with the project’s language, runtime, device, and deployment setup.
Official references describe these capabilities in different environments: Xcode, Visual Studio, Android Studio, and the GDB manual. These references establish tool features, not a comparative ranking or a guarantee that one workflow applies unchanged to every production or distributed-system incident.
