This guide gives a Solly Wrap example, not a substitute for your carrier’s manual. Before using any wrap, check that your baby meets its age and weight guidance, then confirm the baby is upright, snug, visible, and breathing freely before you move.
Before you begin: check the wrap and your baby’s eligibility
Find the manual for the exact make and model you own. Check its minimum and maximum weight and age guidance, carry position, and instructions for loading and removal. For example, Solly Baby’s guidance specifies 8–25 lb for the Solly Wrap. The Ergobaby Aura Wrap manual specifies 8 lb / 3.6 kg to 25 lb / 11.3 kg and marks its classic carry newborn+ (0–4 months). Those are product limits, not universal newborn-wrap limits.

Inspect the fabric and seams for damage, and follow the manufacturer’s preparation instructions. On your first attempt, ask another adult to help; practice securing and removing the wrap safely before carrying the baby in it. If your baby was premature or low birth weight, has breathing difficulties, or has another relevant medical concern, ask a health professional before using a carrier. The ACCC identifies these babies, along with babies younger than four months, as higher-risk users; Health Canada’s safety guidance was updated 2025-11-03, and HealthyChildren.org last updated its carrier guidance 2025-04-11.

The following is an example sequence for the Solly Wrap only. Follow its current instructions and do not combine steps from another brand’s tutorial. For another model, use that model’s manual from start to finish; for instance, the Aura manual illustrates its own tying and infant-loading sequence.

- Center the wrap. Place the Solly Wrap’s center tag at your sternum.
- Cross the tails behind you. Bring each tail over the opposite shoulder.
- Thread and tighten. Pass the ends through the tag section and pull down until the fabric is taut.
- Cross and tie at your waist. Cross the ends at the front, wrap the tails around your waist, then tie a double knot. The Solly instructions allow the knot at the front, back, or side.
- Make room for the baby. Move the inner cross strap away from your body. Keep supporting the baby as you guide one leg through, positioning the fabric at the back of that knee. Repeat with the other cross strap and leg.
- Settle the baby and spread the fabric. Let the hips settle into a seated position. Spread the inner, then the outer, cross strap from knee to shoulder as the Solly instructions show, supporting the baby throughout.
Check the baby’s position and airway before moving
Use the ACCC Product Safety TICKS check before walking: “Tight”, “In view at all times”, “Close enough to kiss”, “Keep chin off chest”, and “Supported back.” The baby should be upright and snug against you, high enough to kiss. Keep the whole face visible, with nose and mouth uncovered; the chin should remain away from the chest, and the back should be supported. Check that there is no slack that could let the baby slump and that the knot is secure. These checks reflect guidance from the ACCC, Health Canada, and the American Academy of Pediatrics’ HealthyChildren.org.
Recheck the baby’s breathing and temperature regularly. Newborns under four months need particular care because their neck control is limited and airway position can be compromised. If you cannot keep the baby’s face visible, chin clear of the chest, and body supported, take the baby out and reset the wrap.

While carrying, and when it is time to take the wrap off
Support the baby when bending and bend at your knees. If the baby falls asleep, check their position and breathing, then move them to an appropriate safe sleep surface as soon as possible: a wrap is for carrying, not a safe sleep environment. Remove the wrap using the exact model’s instructions while continuing to support the baby. If the fit or sequence is unclear, ask the manufacturer or a qualified babywearing professional for a hands-on demonstration; ACCC and Health Canada guidance both recommend checking suitability and instruction quality.
