You don’t need a special app, cable or purchase to text between a Samsung phone and an iPhone. Open your messaging app on the Samsung, enter the iPhone user’s phone number, and send. The message travels as RCS if both phones and both carriers support it, and otherwise as SMS or MMS. Availability varies by carrier and region.
Which route your message takes
Three different services can carry a conversation between the two platforms. They differ in features, network needs and privacy.

Because iMessage is Apple-to-Apple only, a Samsung-to-iPhone conversation will never be iMessage.

Sending a text from your Samsung
- Open the messaging app you normally use on your Galaxy phone.
- Start a new conversation and enter the iPhone user’s mobile number.
- Type your message, add photos or video if you like, and send.
Exact menu names and RCS controls differ by Galaxy model, messaging app and carrier configuration. If you need app-specific settings, check Samsung’s current support instructions for your model.

Turning on RCS on the iPhone
The iPhone side has documented steps from Apple Support. The iPhone owner should do the following:
- Update to iOS 18 or later, if the device supports it.
- Confirm the mobile plan comes from a provider that supports RCS on iPhone.
- Go to Settings > Apps > Messages > RCS Messaging and turn it on.
If the RCS Messaging option doesn’t appear, Apple says RCS may not be available for that carrier or region. Activation can also take some time after you switch it on.

What the green bubble means
On an iPhone, RCS, SMS and MMS messages all appear green. A green bubble doesn’t mean the message failed, and it doesn’t tell you whether RCS or SMS/MMS carried it. Blue means iMessage.

- Check the connection. RCS and MMS need Wi-Fi or mobile data. SMS needs cellular service.
- Check the number. Make sure the recipient’s phone number or email address is correct.
- Ask the carrier. Ask whether your plan supports the type of message you’re sending: RCS, MMS or SMS.
- Check the iPhone’s iMessage fallback. If the iPhone user expects iMessage to be used, Apple documents a setting that sends as SMS when iMessage is unavailable.
- Check carrier diagnostics. Carrier tools and Samsung app menus vary by model and provider, so use your carrier’s or Samsung’s current guidance.
Carrier-by-carrier RCS support wasn’t established, so confirm current support with your provider before relying on RCS features.
