You can test an existing webcam in a browser without joining a meeting: open a webcam test page, allow camera access, and check that the live preview shows the camera you intend to use. When you finish, stop the test or close the page.
Test your webcam in a browser
- Open a browser-based webcam test page. For example, web.camera and webcam.org describe pages that provide a live preview.
- Start the test and approve the browser’s camera permission prompt. If you previously blocked access, use the browser’s site settings to allow camera access and retry. Chrome Help explains how camera permissions work in Chrome.
- Check that the preview is live and shows the intended camera. If the page offers a camera selector, choose the device you plan to use on your call.
- Stop the test or close the page when you are done.
The check requires an existing webcam and a browser that can access it; you do not need to enter a call or buy additional equipment.

What a browser test can—and cannot—confirm
A live preview shows that the browser and test page can access a camera at that moment. It does not confirm that a separate video-call app has the right camera selected or that its settings will work. Check the camera selection in the app before the call if you need to verify that setup too.

Camera access depends on browser and device permissions. Chrome’s help says sites may not work if camera access is denied, and notes that work or school administrators can manage camera settings. The exact controls vary by browser, device, and whether the device is managed.

If the preview is black or missing
A blank preview can have several causes; it does not by itself identify a faulty camera. Try these checks in order:
- Check site permission. If you denied the browser prompt or the site is blocked, change the site’s camera permission to allow access, then reload or restart the test. In Chrome, use the site permission controls described in Chrome Help.
- Select the right camera. If more than one camera is available, choose the intended device in the test page’s camera selector.
- Close other camera apps. Quit other applications that may be using the webcam, then retry the preview.
- Check device access and physical controls. Confirm that the device’s privacy settings allow camera access and that any physical shutter or camera switch is open.
- Check for managed settings. On a work or school device, an administrator may control browser permissions. Contact the administrator if you cannot change the setting yourself.
Consider privacy before granting access
A browser test needs permission to access the camera to display a preview. Grant access only to a page you chose, and stop the test or close the page when finished. Review the specific service’s privacy information rather than assuming every test page handles camera data the same way.

Both web.camera and webcam.org say their previews or tests run locally and that video is not uploaded. Those are the services’ own statements, not independent privacy audits.
