Use Apple’s built-in Voice Memos and Camera checks to compare how your iPhone records in different situations. They can help narrow down whether the trouble affects ordinary calls, speakerphone, or one app—but they do not identify a particular physical microphone component.
Before testing, remove anything that could block the microphones
Take off the case, screen protector, or film, and clear debris from the iPhone’s openings. Apple does not specify a cleaning tool in its instructions. Retest after removing possible obstructions.

Test ordinary phone or FaceTime calls with Voice Memos
- Open the Voice Memos app.
- Speak toward the bottom of the iPhone while recording.
- Stop the recording and play it back. Apple says the voice should sound clear.
If the memo is unclear, that is a reason to continue troubleshooting or seek service; it does not, on its own, prove that a specific microphone has failed. If the memo is clear but people still cannot hear you on calls, the problem is not reproduced by this recording check. Apple’s guidance does not diagnose the cause of that difference.

Compare Camera recordings for speakerphone problems
- Open Camera and record a video while speaking toward the top of the iPhone.
- Switch to the other camera selection and record a second video while speaking toward the top of the phone.
- Play both videos and compare how clearly your voice comes through.
Apple recommends this paired-video check for speakerphone complaints. A difference between the recordings is useful comparative evidence, but Apple does not name the physical microphone used in either recording or map the result to a particular part.

If the microphone problem happens in only one app
- Open Settings > Privacy & Security > Microphone.
- Check that the affected app is enabled.
- If it is already enabled or does not appear in the list, contact the app developer.
What these checks can—and cannot—tell you
- Voice Memos is unclear: The bottom-of-phone recording is unclear, but that alone does not establish which microphone component is at fault.
- Voice Memos is clear, but calls are not: The problem does not appear in that recording check. Apple’s instructions do not identify a carrier, call-routing, or hardware cause from this result.
- The two Camera videos differ: The recordings provide a comparison relevant to speakerphone symptoms, not a component-level diagnosis.
- Only one app has trouble: Check its microphone permission and contact its developer when appropriate.
When to seek service
If audio remains unclear during calls, recordings, or app use after these checks, Apple says service may be needed. Persistent trouble is a reason to have the iPhone assessed, not proof that a particular replacement part is required.
