Check whether controls are reachable, focus is visible, keyboard actions work, and spoken names, labels, reading order, and updates give a user what they need. An automated scan can help find some problems, but it cannot establish that a site is accessible on its own.
Start with a real task, not a random page check
Choose one representative page or interface and a task a visitor or editor needs to complete. Examples include opening the main navigation, submitting a search, using a dialog, changing a block setting, or sending a form. Test the controls and feedback involved in that task from start to finish.

For WordPress core, WordPress.org sites, and official plugins, the published coding standard expects conformance with WCAG 2.2 Level AA. WCAG covers content and behavior, not merely a theme’s appearance. WordPress describes usability testing as important alongside checking success criteria.
Test the flow with a keyboard
- Set the mouse aside. Use Tab to move forward and Shift+Tab to move backward through interactive controls. Check that links, buttons, fields, menu items, and other actions can be reached.
- Watch focus. At each step, confirm that the currently focused control is visually apparent. A user who cannot tell where keyboard input will go may be unable to complete the task.
- Operate controls with expected keys. WordPress’s Block Editor testing guidance says buttons should activate with Enter and Space, while checkboxes and radio buttons should be checked with Space, not Enter. These are useful checks for Gutenberg controls, not a guarantee that every theme or plugin uses identical interactions.
- Check menus and grouped controls. Where a menu or composite widget is designed for arrow-key navigation, try its expected arrow keys and confirm you can leave it again. A confusing or unpredictable interaction can also make keyboard use difficult.
- Open and exit overlays. Test dialogs, drawers, and menus from the keyboard. Check that you can close them and that focus remains understandable after they open or close; do not let keyboard focus become trapped.
- Finish the task. Submit the form, reach the intended destination, or complete the editor action. Note any step that cannot be performed or whose result is unclear.
Gutenberg’s specific shortcut guidance should not be treated as a universal prescription to add ARIA roles. Use semantic HTML and an appropriate interaction pattern; a role is useful only when it accurately describes the widget and its behavior.

Repeat the task with a screen reader
Listen to the page and controls in their reading and navigation order. For each step, ask whether the information announced is enough to identify the control, understand its purpose and state, and complete the task. Check:
- Whether buttons, links, and other controls have meaningful accessible names and their roles are conveyed.
- Whether each form field has an associated, understandable label and errors or status changes are announced or otherwise available.
- Whether headings and landmarks provide useful ways to navigate, and whether the reading order makes sense.
- Whether alternative text conveys relevant image information when needed.
WordPress’s contributor testing pathway also calls out roles, reading order, alt text, and form labels. Focus on what a person needs to know at each stage of the same task, rather than merely listening to the entire page without a goal.

Use a practical screen-reader and browser setup
The WordPress Block Editor handbook documents NVDA with Firefox and VoiceOver with Safari as testing examples. For its Gutenberg-specific steps, it suggests NVDA’s Elements List (Insert+F7) to inspect links, headings, form fields, buttons, and landmarks, followed by landmark navigation. Its VoiceOver instructions use the Rotor (Control+Option+U) to choose a region, then Control+Option with the left or right arrow keys to move through elements. The handbook was last updated September 15, 2026; shortcuts can vary by operating system and software version, so consult current documentation if one does not work.
Choose combinations relevant to the audience and interface you are testing. Those two pairings are starting points, not an exhaustive compatibility matrix. The WebAIM Screen Reader User Survey #8 was conducted in August–September 2019 and received 1,224 valid responses; its authors caution that the uncontrolled sample may not represent all screen-reader users. The respondent counts below are historical survey results, not current usage estimates or a substitute for testing the combinations your audience uses.

Use an automated scan as a complement
WordPress’s contributor pathway suggests axe DevTools as an initial browser scan and states: “Automated tools catch ~30% of issues — they’re a starting point, not a complete test.” Treat that as the estimate and wording published on that page, not a universal measured rate. A scan can flag some detectable issues, but a clean result does not tell you whether focus is visible, a keyboard flow is usable, or a screen reader announces controls and updates correctly.
Use the scan alongside the manual task checks. Report the methods actually used; do not describe a site as accessible or WCAG-conformant based on one page, one scan, or a brief pass with one browser and screen-reader pairing.

Record results so another person can reproduce them
WordPress asks testers to report what they tested, how they tested it (including tools, browser, and operating system), what they found, and reproduction steps. Capture enough detail to distinguish an observed problem from an assumption. A screenshot can help with a visible focus issue; screen-reader speech output may help explain an announcement problem.

What an accessibility-ready theme label means
Do not treat an accessibility-ready theme tag as proof that an entire site conforms to WCAG AA. WordPress says the tag reflects a minimum theme-review standard, not a claim that the theme meets WCAG AA; WCAG also applies to content. WordPress announced that updated accessibility-ready requirements took effect May 6, 2026, with testing steps, tools, and pass/fail criteria. The tag remains distinct from conformance of a complete site, including its content and other components. See the WordPress announcement on updated theme requirements.
