If alerts arrive late on a Samsung Galaxy, compare the same repeatable notification while the phone is active and idle, then change one relevant setting at a time. A delay that improves after removing the affected app from a background-sleep list points toward a phone-side restriction; a delay limited to one app can instead indicate an app setting or service issue. Neither pattern proves the root cause on its own.
Start with a controlled comparison
Use a notification you can trigger more than once, such as a message sent from another account or person. A one-off event is hard to diagnose if you do not know when the service sent it.

- Record a baseline. Note when you trigger or send the event and when the alert appears. Repeat the same test several times.
- Compare active and idle conditions. Test once while using the phone, then again after leaving it idle with the screen off. Note whether alerts arrive only after you wake the phone. Record whether Power saving, Do Not Disturb (DND), Data Saver, Wi-Fi, or mobile data was active. Keep settings unchanged during this baseline.
- Change one variable at a time. Repeat the same trigger after each adjustment below. Otherwise, an improvement will not tell you which change mattered.
Use the event or send time as your starting point, not just the time you noticed the alert. If the test trigger itself is uncertain, or delays are sporadic, the result may not support a firm conclusion.

Rule out notification controls first
Confirm that the app is allowed to notify you and that the specific type of alert is enabled. On many Galaxy versions, open Settings > Apps > [app] > Notifications, then check Allow notifications and the relevant notification categories. Also review notification controls inside the app: an app can have its own settings for messages, accounts, or alert types.

Temporarily turn off DND and Power saving, then repeat the same test. Samsung lists both as settings that can prevent notifications from displaying. Turning them off helps rule out a display or power-mode explanation; it does not show whether a particular app’s service sent the alert promptly. See Samsung’s notification troubleshooting guidance.
Check whether the app is restricted in the background
Samsung says apps in Sleeping or Deep sleeping modes may not send notifications while closed. Its developer documentation describes a deep-sleeping app as inactive in the background and unable to perform activities such as notifications or updates. Check the affected app’s sleep status before concluding that its service is at fault.

- Open Settings > Battery or Settings > Device care (or Battery and device care) > Battery.
- Look for Background usage limits. Samsung’s US support guidance uses this label and path; menu names and locations can vary by Galaxy model, Android version, and One UI version.
- Check Sleeping apps and Deep sleeping apps. If the affected app is listed, remove it from the list. If your phone offers Never sleeping apps, you can add the app there for the test.
- Repeat the idle test without changing another setting. Compare the recorded alert times with your baseline.
If repeated idle tests improve after you remove only that app’s background restriction, a phone-side limit becomes a more plausible explanation. It remains an indication, not proof: delivery timing can also depend on the app and its service. Samsung describes these background limits in its app-management guidance for developers.
Compare apps and network conditions
Test another app on the same phone
If possible, trigger a comparable, repeatable alert from a second app under the same idle conditions. If multiple apps are delayed, a device-wide background or connectivity condition becomes more plausible. If other apps notify promptly while one app remains late, investigate that app’s notification settings, account state, and service status. This comparison narrows the possibilities but cannot identify an app-side cause, such as a service or account issue, by itself.

Compare Wi-Fi with mobile data
When the pattern suggests a connection issue, repeat the same test once on Wi-Fi and once on mobile data, keeping other settings fixed. Check Data Saver as well; Samsung Gulf includes it among its notification troubleshooting checks. A difference between networks is a reason to investigate connectivity or delivery conditions, not proof that the router, carrier, or any single component is responsible. See Samsung Gulf’s notification troubleshooting steps.
Read the results without overclaiming
- Phone-side background restriction is more plausible when repeated tests show delays mainly while idle, the app is listed as sleeping or deep sleeping, and the same test improves after removing that restriction.
- App settings or service behavior is more plausible when other apps work under the same conditions, the affected app is not sleep-restricted, and its alerts remain late across repeated tests. Check its own notification controls, account state, and service status.
- A broader phone or connection condition is more plausible when several apps are affected, outcomes differ between Wi-Fi and mobile data, or changing a device-wide mode changes the pattern.
- The result is inconclusive when delays are sporadic, the trigger time is uncertain, or test conditions vary. Repeat with a more reliable trigger and keep a timestamp log.
What to record before asking for help
Keep a short log with the Galaxy model, Android and One UI versions, app version, event or send time, alert arrival time, whether the phone was idle, network type, and the single setting changed in each test. Update the app and phone software if updates are available; Samsung recommends checking both. If the pattern remains inconsistent, share the log with the app provider and Samsung Support so they can assess the same conditions. Samsung’s support guidance also recommends checking for app and Android software updates.
