Percy adds visual regression checks to an existing browser-test workflow: capture meaningful page states with Percy snapshot calls, let Percy discover their assets and render screenshots, then review the resulting diffs against a baseline. Your test suite captures the page state; Percy’s infrastructure renders the screenshots.
How Percy screenshot diffs fit into a test workflow
- Run your existing application or component tests with a Percy SDK or CLI integration.
- At stable, user-visible points in those tests, call Percy to capture named snapshots.
- Percy serializes the captured page state and discovers its assets, then renders screenshots in its infrastructure across configured browsers and widths.
- Inspect the Percy build, review each difference, and approve or reject it according to your baseline strategy.
Percy is an additional visual-checking layer, not a replacement for functional tests. Its SDKs cover web applications and component libraries, and it can run alongside an existing CI suite. The exact package, imports, commands, and configuration depend on your framework and SDK; use the current Percy integration guide for your stack rather than copying a command from a different integration.

Choose useful snapshot states
A Percy snapshot is a representation of the page at the moment your test calls the snapshot function. Capture states that a user or reviewer needs to compare, not arbitrary points in page loading.
- Route’s default view after its primary content is ready.
- A responsive layout at a viewport relevant to your users.
- A completed form, validation error, or other important form state.
- An opened modal, menu, or other interaction state.
Wait for an application-specific readiness condition—such as the relevant content or selector becoming visible—before capturing. A fixed sleep may be too short on a slow run and unnecessarily long on a fast one. Use consistent, descriptive snapshot names that identify both route and state, so a reviewer can tell what a diff represents.

What Percy captures—and where screenshots are rendered
The test browser and Percy’s rendering infrastructure have different jobs. The SDK serializes the current DOM state, including form values and CSSOM, and supports accessible iframes and canvas content. A video without a poster is serialized as a still image of its current frame. Percy’s asset-discovery process renders the captured DOM in Chromium and intercepts network requests to find the resources needed to reproduce it.
By default, discovery captures assets served from the same hostname as the tests. Additional hostnames can be allowed in configuration. Protected assets may also need request headers, authorization, or cookies configured in the SDK’s discovery settings.
After discovery, Percy’s infrastructure renders the captured state across the browsers and widths configured for the project. The screenshots are not captured inside the test suite. During this rendering step, JavaScript is disabled by default because the page’s JavaScript has already run before capture; enabling it may alter an already-formed DOM. Percy also removes noscript elements and freezes CSS animations. DOM capture is supported in Firefox and Chromium; Shadow DOM capture is documented as Chrome-only.

Run Percy in CI and review each build
- Configure the Percy integration for your framework using its current official guide.
- Add snapshot calls after tests have reached the intended visual states, and run the tests with Percy enabled.
- Wait for Percy to finish processing the visual build, then open its snapshots and diffs.
- Decide whether each difference is an intended design change or an unexpected regression.
- Approve or reject changes using the project’s selected baseline strategy.
Percy can connect visual review to code-review workflows, including pull or merge requests, Slack notifications, and webhooks; the available integration details are listed on the Percy integrations page. Keeping visual approval with the code change that caused it makes the reason for a changed baseline easier to trace.
Choose a baseline strategy that matches review
A baseline determines which prior build or approved snapshot set Percy uses to calculate a diff. Percy documents two strategies:
| Strategy | Comparison and approval | Fits when |
|---|---|---|
| Git | Compares against a build from a base branch found through Git commit history; the team accepts or rejects the build as a whole. | CI runs Percy on feature branches and visual review follows the pull request as a unit. Percy says most teams should use this strategy. |
| Visual Git | Compares with the latest approved snapshots on each branch without requiring Git history; snapshots can be approved individually. | The team needs per-snapshot approvals or runs visual tests outside its development pipeline. |
For Percy CLI projects, the documentation also describes choosing a base build manually with the PERCY_BRANCH environment variable. Configure the baseline deliberately: an unexpected comparison can result from using the wrong base branch or approval model. See Percy’s baseline management guide for the current configuration details.

Troubleshoot missing or inconsistent diffs
External images, fonts, or other assets are missing
Asset discovery captures the test hostname by default. If a page loads resources from another hostname, allow that host in the Percy discovery configuration. For protected resources, provide the required headers, authorization, or cookies through the SDK’s discovery settings.
Content is captured before its assets are ready
Percy’s documented default asset-discovery network-idle timeout is 100 ms with no new network requests. Pages that initiate additional requests may need a longer timeout. Also wait in the test for the actual content state you intend to compare; a network-idle condition alone does not prove that the application has finished rendering.
Form values or canvas drawings do not match
These states may exist in page memory rather than as ordinary DOM markup. Percy documents serialization for form values and canvas drawings. Confirm that the state is set before the snapshot call and consult the current workflow guide if the captured state still differs.

Shadow DOM differs by browser
Percy’s workflow documentation identifies Shadow DOM capture as Chrome-only. If the test relies on Shadow DOM, account for that limitation when interpreting cross-browser results.
You want to diagnose capture without creating a build
Percy CLI’s --debug mode runs SDK capture and asset discovery without creating a build or uploading snapshots. Use --verbose when you need detailed logs while still uploading snapshots for review.

Frequently Asked Questions
Does Percy take screenshots inside my test browser?
No. The SDK captures and serializes the page state; Percy’s infrastructure renders the screenshots.
Can Percy compare individual snapshots instead of an entire build?
Yes. Visual Git supports per-snapshot approval; Git uses whole-build approval.
