Emulation is useful, but it cannot prove that a site works correctly in every real mobile browser. Record the device, operating system, browser, and versions you actually tested; “latest” changes over time.
1. Define which devices and browsers to test
Start with the audience and support commitments for your site rather than trying to cover every phone. Choose representative Android and iPhone models, operating-system versions, and browsers, with extra attention to devices or flows that are important to your users.

There is no fixed meaning of “latest”: versions change, and a device-testing service’s inventory does not establish that every listed device has the newest OS or browser. The available source material does not verify exact October 2026 release numbers. Check the current version shown on each device or in your chosen service, and record the versions used in each test.

2. Use emulation as a fast first pass
Browser device mode can help you inspect responsive layouts at relevant viewport sizes and catch obvious problems before testing on phones. It is a useful screening step, not a substitute for mobile testing: emulators do not reproduce every difference in browser APIs, CSS support, or mobile behavior. - Open the site in your desktop browser’s developer tools and enable its device or responsive mode.
- Check the viewport sizes and orientations that represent your target devices.
- Inspect layout, overflow, text, navigation, and visible controls.
- Move any critical or suspicious behavior to a physical-device test before calling it verified.
3. Validate critical flows on real devices
Test the interactions that matter to your site, not just whether the home page renders. Use actual devices that represent your supported audience, or a real-device testing service when local access is insufficient.
- Navigation: open and close menus, follow links, and check that controls remain usable at different orientations and scroll positions.
- Forms and keyboards: enter and submit data, check focus movement, and see whether the virtual keyboard hides fields or important actions.
- Scrolling and layout: scroll long pages and overlays, inspect fixed or sticky elements, and check for clipped or overlapping content.
- Media and device-specific behavior: exercise playback and any feature that depends on the device or browser.
- Sign-in and other critical journeys: complete the full flow, including redirects and return navigation, rather than checking only its first screen.
Choose a focused device matrix based on the browsers and devices your audience uses. A test on one iPhone or Android phone is evidence about that configuration, not every device in its operating-system family.

4. Choose a testing setup that fits the question

Compare fidelity, OS and browser coverage, debugging access, setup effort, and whether the setup can reach your local or staging environment. A cloud service’s available devices and debugging support depend on its current device, browser, and OS combinations. BrowserStack documents mobile debugging through Chrome DevTools and Safari Web Inspector; confirm current support for the session you plan to use.
5. Debug where the failure occurs
Android WebView
If the problem is inside an Android app’s embedded WebView, use Chrome DevTools to inspect the page’s HTML, CSS, and JavaScript. This is specifically a WebView workflow; it does not replace testing the site in Chrome or another standalone mobile browser. Remote device sessions
For a remote mobile session, use the debugging tools supported by the service and its current device/browser/OS combination. BrowserStack describes access through Chrome DevTools and Safari Web Inspector, but availability depends on the selected configuration: mobile debugging documentation.
A Chrome for Developers post notes that Safari Web Inspector debugging for Chrome on iOS was enabled starting with Chrome 115. Treat that as historical context, not a guarantee about current versions or every remote setup: Chrome on iOS debugging.

6. Make failures reproducible
For each issue, record the device model, OS version, browser and browser version, URL or build, reproduction steps, expected result, and observed result. Attach a screenshot or recording when available. This gives another developer enough context to check the same configuration and distinguish a browser-specific problem from a general site defect.

7. Troubleshoot common testing failures
- The page looks right in device mode but fails on a phone: emulation does not capture every mobile browser difference. Reproduce the issue on a physical device and record its exact browser and OS versions.
- A failure occurs only inside an app: determine whether the app uses a WebView, then inspect that WebView with the Android debugging workflow rather than treating it as ordinary standalone-browser testing.
- The device cloud does not offer the expected configuration: check the service’s current inventory and support for the exact device, OS, and browser combination. Do not infer newest-version coverage from a device listing.
- A remote inspector is unavailable: verify that the selected service session and browser support the debugging method you want; remote debugging availability varies by configuration.
- A local or staging site cannot be reached remotely: check that the chosen testing setup supports local or staging access and follow that service’s current connection instructions.
- You cannot reproduce a reported bug: compare the environment and steps with the report, including orientation, sign-in state, URL or build, and browser version; request a recording if the behavior is intermittent.
