Choose which older browsers you actually need to support
There is no universal definition of an “old browser” and no single correct version to test. Base your targets on your audience data, contractual requirements and documented support commitments rather than testing every historical release.

Write down the target before choosing a tool. For each entry, record:
- Browser and exact version: name a fixed release or a minimum supported version.
- Operating system: include it when behavior may depend on the platform.
- Device or viewport: specify a real device if hardware matters; otherwise record the viewport and scale you need to check.
- User journeys: identify the flows that must work, such as signing in, submitting a form, completing a purchase or using a key feature.
- Reason for the target: link it to an audience need, support policy or contract so the matrix can be maintained deliberately.
Keep the matrix narrow enough to run reliably. A test against the wrong operating system or an automation-specific browser build may not answer a question about a particular branded browser.

Choose a testing method for the target environment
| Method | Best fit | Important limitation |
|---|---|---|
| Playwright-managed local browsers | Repeatable automated checks across supported Chromium, Firefox and WebKit builds. | Browser binaries are tied to the Playwright release. Its WebKit build is not branded Safari, and OS-specific behavior can differ. |
| Hosted browser grid | Testing a listed browser and OS combination without maintaining a local lab. | Availability varies by provider product and changes. Confirm the exact combination in current documentation or the dashboard. |
| Hosted grid with local testing | Running remote browsers against a development or staging site not publicly reachable. | Requires the provider’s local connection setup and correct capabilities. |
| Dedicated legacy machine or device | Reproducing an environment missing from grids, or a hardware-specific defect. | Your team must maintain it. Choose hardware only when a defined target audience or support requirement justifies it. |
Run repeatable automated checks with Playwright
Playwright’s official browser documentation states that each Playwright version needs specific browser binaries. Pin the package version used by your project, install that version’s browsers, and run the same high-value tests against the engines it supports. When you update Playwright, install its corresponding browser binaries again.
- Pin Playwright in your project. Use your package manager’s lockfile so other developers and CI install the same package release.
- Install its browser binaries. Run
npx playwright installafter installing the pinned Playwright dependency. On Linux CI where system dependencies are missing, usenpx playwright install --with-depswhere supported. - Run your critical tests against the supported engines. Configure Playwright projects for Chromium, Firefox and WebKit, then run the same journey tests in each. These builds are useful for cross-engine checks, but do not treat them as substitutes for every branded browser or operating system.
- Record the result with the environment. Capture the browser build, OS, viewport or device, and test outcome so a failure can be reproduced.
For example, a Playwright test can be kept engine-neutral so the same flow runs in each configured project:
import { test, expect } from '@playwright/test';
test('customer can sign in', async ({ page }) => {
await page.goto('https://example.com/login');
await page.getByLabel('Email').fill('[email protected]');
await page.getByLabel('Password').fill('test-password');
await page.getByRole('button', { name: 'Sign in' }).click();
await expect(page.getByRole('heading', { name: 'Dashboard' })).toBeVisible();
});

Replace the example URL and selectors with your application’s actual login flow and use test credentials appropriate for your environment. The test checks an important outcome rather than merely whether the page loaded.
Know what Playwright’s browser builds prove
Playwright can install supported Chromium, Firefox and WebKit browsers, and those binaries track the Playwright release. Its WebKit build is not branded Safari; platform-dependent features, including media codec availability, can vary. If a bug depends on Safari itself, a particular OS, or a browser release older than Playwright currently supplies, test in an environment that provides that exact target instead of inferring its behavior from a WebKit run.
Test a specific branded browser or fixed older version
When the support matrix names a particular Chrome, Edge or Safari release, or an OS-specific combination, select a provider or controlled machine that explicitly offers it. Set the browser and OS capabilities rather than relying on defaults. The BrowserStack Automate capabilities documentation describes explicit browser and operating-system capabilities and directs users to current supported-version listings.

Aliases such as latest, latest-1 and latest-2 can help target recent releases, but they are not a stable way to request a particular historical version. For an older fixed target, choose an explicit supported version. Check the matrix for the exact BrowserStack product and integration you plan to use: its Selenium and Playwright offerings have different support matrices, and a version listed for one does not establish availability in the other.
If a browser or OS combination is missing from current hosted options and it is required by your support policy, use a controlled machine or device that matches the target. Keep that environment documented and maintained; there is no universally appropriate legacy device to recommend without knowing the target audience and defect.
Reach a private development or staging site from a hosted grid
A remote browser cannot normally reach a site available only on your laptop or internal network. BrowserStack’s Local Testing documentation describes a connection that makes internal sites available to remote test environments; its Playwright capabilities include the browserstack.local setting.

- Follow the provider’s current Local Testing setup to start its local connection from a machine that can reach the test site.
- Enable the local setting in the capabilities sent with the remote test session.
- Use the internal site’s reachable address in the test and verify that the tunnel is active before diagnosing an application failure.
Capability names and setup steps can vary by provider product and integration, so use the current documentation for the exact grid you selected.
Separate compatibility failures from environment failures
A failed test is not automatically proof of an older-browser bug. First confirm that the session used the intended browser version, OS and viewport, and that the test site was reachable. Then rerun visual or platform-sensitive failures in the actual target environment and inspect the relevant journey.
The Tool Desk
Outbyte PC Repair FREERepair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Outbyte Driver Updater FREEFix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →- Wrong browser or OS: compare the session’s reported capabilities with the support matrix; set explicit values and retry.
- Browser launch or binary error in Playwright: install browser binaries for the pinned Playwright release. If the package was upgraded, rerun its install command.
- Remote session cannot load an internal site: check that Local Testing is running and enabled in the remote capabilities, and that the connection can reach the host.
- Failure only in a branded browser or OS: reproduce in that exact environment; do not assume a Playwright WebKit run proves Safari behavior.
- Visual or device-sensitive discrepancy: record viewport or device details and repeat in the matching target, since environment differences can affect rendering.
- Target no longer available: verify the provider’s live listing and decide whether another controlled environment is needed before making it a release gate.
Keep the test matrix useful over time
Browser-grid availability changes, and older combinations may disappear. Review the matrix periodically, remove targets no longer justified by a support commitment, and verify a provider’s exact browser, OS and device availability before a release depends on it. Keep Playwright and its installed browser revisions aligned in local development and CI to avoid unexplained differences between runs.
Best Value
Performance, repeatability and cost
- Run a small set of high-value journeys across the full target matrix; use broader suites on the targets where the risk warrants the runtime.
- Use pinned versions for reproducible release checks. Moving aliases are convenient for recent-browser coverage but can change the environment over time.
- Hosted grids reduce the work of maintaining browser installations, but require checking their current product-specific coverage and using their connection setup for private sites.
- A dedicated machine can preserve an otherwise unavailable target, at the cost of maintaining the OS, browser and hardware environment.

For a quick visual capture of a publicly reachable page, ScreenshotNeo is a screenshot API and MCP server; it does not replace interactive compatibility tests in a specified older browser. One GET request returns a PNG, JPEG, WebP or PDF, and the parameters used by other screenshot APIs also work.
cURL example (see the ScreenshotNeo documentation):
curl -G "https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot" -d access_key=YOUR_API_KEY --data-urlencode url=https://example.com -o shot.webp

Bot checks or CAPTCHAs, blank pages, timeouts, failed loads and cache hits cost nothing, and response headers report the page verdict and whether it was billed. Its MCP server provides take_screenshot, get_page_info and capture_pdf for Claude, Cursor and other MCP clients. Frequently Asked Questions
Does Playwright test Safari?
No. Playwright’s WebKit build is not branded Safari; use a target environment that supplies Safari when Safari-specific behavior matters.
Can I test a website that is only on localhost with a remote browser?
Yes, if your hosted provider’s Local Testing connection is configured and enabled for the remote session.
