Set Playwright’s reducedMotion option to 'reduce', then check the page’s content, interactions, and layout at the viewport sizes that matter. Compare it with 'no-preference' when motion affects the interface. A passing prefers-reduced-motion media-query check confirms the preference was emulated; it does not prove the site responds to it correctly.
Choose where to enable reduced-motion emulation
Playwright supports the preference at three levels: a Playwright Test configuration, a browser context, or an individual page. The documented default for Playwright Test and browser contexts is no-preference. The TestOptions setting was added in Playwright v1.50, so check your installed version before using it. });The accepted values are reduce, no-preference, and null. Use null to reset emulation to the system default. If only a subset of tests needs the preference, scope it to those tests instead of applying it project-wide:

Verify the preference and test actual page behavior
First, confirm that the page sees the emulated media preference:

It does not tell you whether the application has removed or shortened motion appropriately, whether content remains visible, or whether controls still work. Follow it with checks of the behaviors and states that matter to your site.

Exercise motion-sensitive states
- Load the page and check that important content and controls appear.
- Activate controls that trigger transitions, animated menus, carousels, dialogs, or other motion-sensitive behavior used by your site.
- Check that content does not remain hidden, land in an unexpected position, overlap other elements, or become difficult to use.
- Run the same relevant checks with
no-preferenceif the page’s behavior differs by preference.
Choose assertions based on the intended behavior of your application; these are test-design checks, not a built-in Playwright checklist.

A layout may respond differently at a breakpoint or after an interaction. Test the viewport widths relevant to your site, particularly where its layout changes, and capture relevant states rather than relying only on the initial render. Playwright supports configured viewports and per-test viewport settings. Playwright emulation

Use screenshot assertions carefully
toHaveScreenshot() is useful when visual layout is part of the requirement. Playwright captures screenshots until two consecutive captures match, then saves the last capture for comparison. Review visual diffs alongside functional assertions rather than treating every pixel change as a defect. Playwright visual comparisons
Screenshot rendering can vary with the host operating system, browser version, settings, hardware, power source, and headless mode. Generate and compare baselines in a consistent rendering environment; otherwise, environment differences can obscure whether a change came from the application.
Troubleshoot common failures
- The TestOptions configuration rejects
reducedMotion. The setting was added in Playwright v1.50. Check the installed Playwright version; use a supported release or, where appropriate, the browser context or page API. - The media-query check returns false. Confirm the preference was set on the context or page used for navigation, and that it was set to
reducerather thanno-preferenceornull. - The media-query check passes but the layout is still wrong. The check proves emulation, not application behavior. Exercise the affected interaction and assert the expected content, control state, and layout outcome.
- A visual comparison changes between runs. Check whether the browser version, operating system, headless mode, settings, or hardware differs from the baseline-generation environment. Review the diff before deciding whether it represents a product regression.
- A page-level change does not affect another page.
page.emulateMedia()applies to that page. Set the preference on each relevant page or on the browser context that creates them.
